Seems like the higher mileage vehicle with short trips has the problem of friction material flakes off.

I've seen high mileage vehicles (150k miles) in a 5 yr old trans  and the friction plates still have printed manufacturer numbers on the material. In these trans often the drive lugs are worn on the friction plates

But if the vehicle is high mileage at 10 -15 yrs old with little or no service work..... the friction material falls off.  Could be a build up of moisture in the fluid and the material comes apart.

I have always been fascinated by automatic trannys, but have always been afraid to tear into one.  

what is a good recommended fluid/filter replacement interval :?:
would it be wise to glue a magnet to the pan :?:

I've got about 12K on the 'Glide, was wondering if its time to change the fluid/filter

Do not ever open up a trans further than the pan removal ... there is voo-doo in there.  You must be properly trained and  prepared

And besides, if you stick you fingers in the wrong place , they will get all meshed up...

Thats what I thought.

guess I'll stick with the red fluid I'm familiar with
