For what it's worth I've got a 383 SBC with 700 trans and 3:55 gears in my 32 coupe and it's perfect, both in town and on the hiway. At about 70 -75 I'm doing about 2000 rpm and get about 23-24 MPG. I personally wouldn't want to go any lower on the gears.

I run a 383 with a 700R4 and P285X70X15 BFG's, and I like my 3.89:1 rear gear ratio. Good street manners, good on the interstate at 70-75 (18-19 mpg), and it is a real neck snapper off the line. Perfect combo for me.
