Has anyone ever heard of setting the initial timing with a vaccum gauge?  One of the old mechanics at our garage said my rod sounded retarded.  I used one of those bolt on timing strips and set it to 12 degrees advance.  He put the vacuum gauge on it and ran it up to about 1800 rpm, and advanced it until it leveled off at about 19.5 inches.  It runs GREAT!  Why wouldn't the type of cam cause variations in the vaccum setting?

Yes I've vacuum timed engines. Advance to the highest vacuum, and back off one degree. You do it with distributor vacuum connected. As long as the advance curves are close to stock it works fine.
Welcome to hell. Here's your accordion.

That's what Gene told me to do.  I went home and tried it and the vaccum just kept rising!   :(  I finally gave up and took it to him and he used the method I outlined.

It's been awhile since I've done it but isn't it back it off 1 inch?
I maybe from down under but I know which way is up.

That's one inch of vacuum, not 1" on the degree wheel...
