Years ago, a dj from Amarillo showed up at Liberal with a mazda 4 door. Standad wankel with manual trans and no muffler. That's the worst sounding engine ever made. People were paying him to shut it off. I think the bike could be that bad also. I have a tape made of a special race we had at Amarillo one spring. On this tape is a mazda 2 door with a small blower adapted to it. That thing sure would hurt your ears.

You ought to hear a Rotary at an indoor midget race :D  :D  :D

rotary motors put a new meaning to fugly sound with open headers.

The headers are built from a fairly heavy wall tube

I had a Mazda pickup with a rotary motor once.  Ran a Holly and header from Racing Beat.  I had two mufflers in a row and it was still loud.  When the second motor failed at 100K I swapped in a Mustang II V6 and drove it another 50K.  I liked the pep that the rotary had but it was one hungry momma.  14-15 mpg.

I raced Mazdas for 4 years in the late 70s.  The neat thing about them was you needed to run a megaphone behind the header collector to get the most power which would make it louder yet.  I love the pictures I've got of my little cars leaving the line with the wheels up and everyone in the background having their hands over there ears.  Of course they were nowhere near as fast as the ricers have them going now.
