As most of you know I have almost finished my Model A roadster.  I am using  American National's "CHROME" insurance on my car.  The car is not a high buck rod but because I wanted to insure it for more than $10,000 they requested an appraisal.

This past weekend we took it up to Myrtle Beach South Carolina for the Run to the Sun weekend.   There was an appraiser on site, and they announced it every hour or so. I called his cell phone didn't get an answer, left a message but he never called back.  Later I was talking to a GoodGuys Rep who told me that he did appraisals.  He went into great detail about the "rough" T-Bucket that he had appraised recently that he gave a value of $14,000.   I got very optimistic about what the value of my car may be, thinking that it may reach $17 - $18K.

First thing he said on the way over to look at my cars was that model A's just aren't worth that much money.

He asked me what I was trying to insure the car for and I told him $15,000.00.  He said that figure was at the top of the price range but my car would be hard to build for that money, and that was the figure he would use.  He filled out the sheet, signed and dated it and handed it to me.  I folded it, and stowed it away in the trunk.  After the show was over I got it out to give to my wife for safe keeping.  That is when she noticed that he had written down $1,500.00 for the value of my car!

Guess I'll have to start all over again, get the insurance company to send me another form, maybe I'll tell them I lost the other one.  Heaven only knows when I'll be able to find someone else qualified to appraise my car.  Qualified appraisers don't get down to Mayberry very often.

Oh well it was a great car show anyway over 2,450 cars registered, and lots and lots of spectators.

Have you ever checked out Haggerty Ins. They are on the net and have many agents around the country. They have a good reputation.

I just insured my pile of parts put together as the start of an "A" with them for 10 grand. All it took was 4 pics and a VIN and they insured it.  I did mine through an agent, but I think you can do it over the net.

I think it is haggerty.com. You might want to check them out.

I checked with Haggerty and with Grundy.  I don't remember which said what now, but one had a 2,500 mile limit, and one told me that they had unlimited mileage, but it was limited to use to and from and in shows, parades, etc.  Basically no "pleasure" and certainly no driving it to work.
I have a 45 minute commute to work each way and have for years driven my old cars to work at least once a week if the weather permits.

One of the ladies I talked to after I submitted my application asking for 8,500 miles a year and that it is driven to work ocassionally told me "that we had nothing more to talk about" said "Goodday" and hung up on me.

The chrome insurance is more expensive, but reasonable, and my agent said "you built this car to enjoy" so why keep it locked up for special occasions.  I had to insure my daily driver with them also, but the savings made it worth while.  There is an 8,500 mile limit to the policy which should fit my application better than the others.  My agent said that there was no problem driving the car on errands, or just taking it out for a sunday drive, which we do alot.

I would have loved to had a premium as low as Haggerty and Grundy quoted, but just found the restrictions too limiting.

Here's a couple of quotes.
This one is from Hagerty's website:
QuoteVehicles insured on our program must be used on a limited basis consistent with the operation of something valuable, such as club functions, exhibitions, organized meets, tours, and limited pleasure driving.

And this one is from Grundy's:
QuoteHow many miles can I drive my car each year?
Unlimited - The Grundy Family owns cars dating back to 1909, and recognizes that an attempt to monitor or audit mileage would be nearly impossible. In addition, the Grundy's personally drive thousands of miles a year in organized touring events and simply enjoying and maintaining their cars. You can too!

I talked to Hagerty, where my truck is insured, about taking cross country tours and pleasure driving and they said they didn't have a problem with it as long as I wasn't using it for basic everyday transportation, which I don't.  If you do, you can't get collector's car insurance, but the use you are talking about seems like it fits the description of usage by either Grundy or Hagerty.

Maybe I didn't communicate with them as well as I could.   The woman I talked to seemed to be having a bad day.  I wish I had kept notes on who I had talked to, but I didn't.   I have posted my experience on most every post about insurance and everybody seems to agree with you, that something wasn't right.

My posts are not a bash against either of those insurance companies, simply to point how how easy the CHROME insurance people were to work with, they knew the questions to ask to give me the coverage I wanted.
