I have again a question about the TH700R4 I'm rebuilding.  The internal housing is damaged a little. It's the part where the band apply. The old band was bad and the rivets scratched the surface. I want to replace this housing but can't find online a company that can supply it. Is it a part availlable only from the Chevrolet dealer or is it possible to find it from some transmission specialist?

Thanks,

Gilles

Check the phone book in your area for a transmission parts house.  I have a supplier in Bakersfield that I get used parts from, like the C4 forward clutch piston that someone used a hammer and screwdriver to put it together.  the guy that previously worked on it also left out a few parts.....

If you are talking about the reverse input drum (a steel bucket looking thing with a hole in the middle, clutches inside and a toothed end, Then you should probably just look for another used one.  I had to replace one in the last tranny I did because it was cracked.  cost $25 for a used one from the tranny supply house.

Those parts may be a little hard to find in France :roll:  If you can't find a source in Europe, email me, I can get one locally, and send it to you.

Gilles;

since you are in France I am not sure what to suggest.

In the USA aftermarket suppliers carry the reverse input drum...... BUT , the drum is from chevrolet, in a chevrolet box when you purchase it from an independant parts supplier.

TranStar , NATPRO carry this part in the USA.

or IF you can find a used part in good shape. The area the band applies onto MUST be flat side to side

The GM auto trans are made in France. They call it the 4L60 now I think

GM parts should be available from Opel or Holden dealers in Europe

Thanks for the replies.

I don't think these transmission are built in France.
In France Chevrolet dealers are common as Renault dealers in the States!  :( There is maybe one in Paris who sell new Corvettes, and no one in my town. There are no transmission  shop  or transmission part house, 99% of cars have manual gearbox and almost nobody is able to fix an automatic. Everybody around me think I'm crazy to rebuild one. They are totally scary when I show them  the 130 pages ATSG manual  all written  in English!

Used TH700 are a rarity, I look for one for 1 year now without succes.

There are American parts specialists but they are  expensive and inefficient.  If I ask them for this part they will refuse or order it from the States for me, multiply the price 3 or 4 times, and it will takes weeks to obtain it. It's  why I prefer order online or by fax directly from the States. It's 2 or 3 times cheaper and quicker even with the shipping and tax. I never had a problem if there is one they try it efficiently and quickly. To much a latin mentality here, it's good on some way but bad on other. But I will try a call or 2 just to see what they will say!

This post is not to complain, I choose a hobby (or is this hobby who choose me?) totally marginal here and I assume it.  For 2CV enthousiasts there is no problems, they can order all the parts easily, even new galvanized frames and interiors ready to install. We can order steel parts to make a Citroen traction avant as a cabriolet etc... different country different culture and it's hard to be different, but also good to not be in the same mold as others.
