Torque converter to flex plate problem

I was doing some work on the 48 F1 and decided to put the torque converter bolts in. Seems the torque converter is bottomed out on the crank and the flex plate has to move about 1/4 inch to bolt up.  This is a 1980 350 motor and a 350 turbo hydromatic trans. I am at a loss on this one. Maybe some shims between the two? Any ideas gang? I did try to pull it up, thinking the converter would register in the crank, but not!
