Anybody here bought and used a winch from HF?  The Badland brand type.

A fellow that bought a few Crosley cars from me about 10 years ago  , had the low end light duty from HF..  It would not winch a Crosley into the bed of his 3/4 ton chevy truck.  I see HF still sells that winch. They call it a marine winch

Reason I ask is: while winching an item up on to my trailer today , my winch spit (literally) a few teeth out thru the broken gear case. Steel gear teeth thru the aluminum housing.  This winch is about 30 years old.   Has not been used heavily. I was surprised it spit teeth. It still runs and winches.  I am sure its days are limited?

I have used one for many years on my tilting bed car trailer.  No problems with the winch but the wireless remote failed after a couple of years so I just use the wired remote.

I bought an extra long harbor freight jumper cable set.  I cut them and made one short one and one really long cable.  The short one is a ground and you use it to connect the ground on the winch to the tow vehicle frame.  The long one is for the positive on the winch to positive post of battery on the tow vehicle.  This is a back up system should the battery hooked to the winch fails.

Photo of some of the chunks the winch spit out.   Some is plastic, other is aluminum.  You can see the broken case... as I winched the cable in , the case kinda swelled up , the broken stuff started falling out.

Thanks...  A short while back the youtube guy Project Farm guy Todd did a good test on several Winches and the H-F BadLand 12k winch was in the mix.

I have never used a "rope" type cable , its always been a steel cable. The syn ropes seem to be more common now?

I worked on the trailer winch today...  It appears the winch still works but:  it was the holding brake band  that broke and spit parts out.  I did not fully disassemble the winch , just enough for a look - see.
