Messing with a rotary hand  pump.  Disassembled.  Cleaned, bead blasted.

Need some packing material for the shaft.  Dont need much of the packing material.

Most of the rope like packing  material I find online is 1/4 inch or larger diameter . Seems like the material I need would be thinner.

The old stuff seems like it has graphite in it.  Very brittle , falls apart

I use Teflon packing rope or string in many applications that used graphite-type packings previously.

This stuff can be found in hardware stores, Home Depot, Lowe's, plumbing supply houses, etc.

Wrap many turns in the area where the packing goes.  ...It compresses to make a seal.

thanks for the options.  I will look around local Home improvement stores.  I'd like to put my hands on the stuff for a close up look.

Likely:  I will never use this pump.  I tried to sell it at a swap meet a few weeks ago.  People looked at it and told m e it was stuck & crusty.  I was using it as wall art in the garage.  I liked the look of it.

So.   I brought it home. Took it apart and started cleaning, blasting , rubbing on it.

I have bought small graphite packing in a very small blister pack at a hardware store, like what would have been used in an old fashioned faucet. Never used it, the faucet just needed a washer, but it is out there.
