I tried a search because I know we have visited about this topic but nothing came up.  I did some test driving of the 54 Chevy today.  When I turn a corner to right, I hear a loud pop in the rear of the car.  I thought the 9 inch Ford rear end was an open rear and not a posi.  Now I wonder.  The only time I have heard a similar noise was from a posi and we added some stuff call sperm oil.  ( not a joke ).  Do any of you have any thoughts or suggestions?

Jack up the rear and turn one wheel. If they both go the same direction, it's some form of posi. If they don't, something else is going on. Is there any chance of u-joint bind or clearance on a suspension part?

I'd venture shock mount slop, and broken floor or suspension mount weld somewhere maybe if it isn't LSD clicking. I believe the lube is called whale oil and comes from sperm whales. I have a 12 bolt GM posi from a 72 el Camino and I usually just buy the oil for LSDs rather than using separate additive. If you do have a limited slip... this may sound crazy but drive very slow very tight figure eights. Then repeat in reverse. Doing that a few times will help to distribute lube to all the areas of the differential. If that makes the sound happen less, change lube and repeat the "exercise". Mine was pretty clicky (sticky clutches) when I got it but 3 or 4 times cleared it up. Now and then I get a click but the lube is a decade old now. Might just be from low usage.

What he said .....We used to do that constantly will Bell telephone trucks ....It's a very common problem....You can get a little bottle of "Axle Additive" at any Ford or Chev dealer ....
Squirt it in .. Do the circles in a shopping center parking lot , ( SLOW speed...NO donuts, don't ask how I know    ), and all will be fine with the world ...... 8)

The "pop" sound..I have heard broken spings with sort of a thwap sound  no actual popping sounds. Depended on how the spring was last loaded/unloaded/where the break was.
