Hi,
Can anyone tell me what brand this starter is.  There is NO markings or labels and it is BRAND NEW............
The vendor in Ventura claims it is a Powermaster.  I contacted Powermaster and the tech. said close but no cigar.
I have gone through two of them with a total of less than 20 starts between the two.
The first one, after starting the car a few times, started to activate and stay out spinning without retracting and running with the motor.
The second one, after starting the car a few times, started to engage the flywheel and spins without power to turn the flexplate and it does retract.

The motor is a 283CI block with 327CI top.  The starter DOES NOT have internal SHIMS and I have used flat shims between the starter and the block. It is a STAGGERED hole starter.

Any assistance would be highly appreciated.

LG,
Mike

if the starter is STAYING ENGAGED....

please post a photo of what you are using to control it...

i will try to piece a picture together ..

I've got a starter that may be the same brand on my SBC 350.

Bought it off amazon.com from a vender named Rareelectrical.

http://rareelectrical.com

They also have a storefront on sears.com

A vendor of chinese made components.

Mines been working ok since may. It does tend to 'hang' after starting, but kicks back after a rev or two. Guess I'll see how long it lasts. Got a lot more than 20 starts on it. I'm also running it on my 40 with a Ford starter solenoid in the circuit.

I've purchased 2 Hi Amp alternators from these guys in the past and they seem to be working well. Don't know how long they will last.

perhaps this will help...

lets look at this image of a nippondenso type gear reduction starter..

do you see the threaded stud at 10 O clock?? that is where the Solenoid wire is attached to the solenoid coil winding..  not that the other end of the solenoid coil winding is attached to the right hand contact that goes to the motor brushes/armature windings..

this allows the solenoid to have a serious amp draw when its pulling in the plunger..   once the plunger pulls in and bridges the left and right contact.. there is positive voltage on that contact also but because the armature is now spinning..  there is reduced voltage on that side. and positive voltage it will have LESS amp draw.. just enough to keep the plunger pulled in.. but not enough to burn out the solenoid windings..

just a neat trick...  but why am i telling you this..

because we are dealing with a perm magnet field on these starters.. the only windings are on the armature..  so when you let go of the key from the cranking position.. you have a generator spinning down..creating energy.. this crazy set up can cause the voltage to feed back thru the solenoid coil  when you have both connected together..  this can be enough to keep the solenoid engaged and the drive pinion extended..

i am planning on doing a mock up with short cables next time i have a PMGR on my work bench..  so i can get a decent photo. instead of crayon marks on several pictures..

Some of the Chinese starters have a plastic clutch in the starter drive, they don't take well to staying engaged, There is a replacement with a metal clutch.

Finally figured out what was wrong with the starter.
The gear went out and I had a repair shop replace it.  These mini starters, at least the one I have are MAGNETICALLY driven instead of having an armature.

YOU ARE NOT suppose to use a REMOTE SOLENOID unless you put a diode in the circuit to keep the electricity from feeding back to the starter.
If you use a REMOTE SOLENOID the starter will CONTINUE to run...........ask me how I know.
Also, it is very easy to reverse the direction the gear turns. The repair shop found that out.  All you have to do is reverse the direction of the center body with the magnets are.

this is what i posted..

but maybe i did not explain it well enough..

you have to have 2 wires to the PMGR starters..

a battery cable to the top post that always has 12 volts on it.. .

and a wire to the Solenoid connection that is either fed by the key or by a remote solenoid..

but you MAY NOT RUN A SINGLE cable with a jumper wire to the solenoid at the starter...  or it will run on because when the starter is spinning down it becomes a generator and keeps the solenoid engaged...

i am so glad you finally got it fixed..  what a nightmare..
