I'm looking at a 94 Mercury Marauder, the one with dual overhead cam 305 hp. It's cheap because the motor has a ticking sound coming from the top of a head.... Sounds like a tappet.

It has over 225K on it so will most likely need a rebuild anyway. Any of you have experience with this motor? Any pitfalls to watch out for?

Thx,
Dave

fan belt tensioners making noise..

valve train problems..

i seem to recall valve guides sliding out of place.. but perhaps that was a mopar problem..

cam sprockets with loose bolts..

chain tensioner problems..

spun rod bearings ..

as for the spark plugs.. there are some great articles on how to install solid thread inserts from the TOP without pulling the heads...

not cheep for the tooling ..  but a LOT cheeper than pulling and replacing a head..

here is one option with a video..

One of the first things I did to my 5.4 Ford truck engine was pull the plugs and put anti-sieze on the plug threads.

At 65k miles the truck started eating the coils on plug. Had two coils go bad with in 500 miles of each.. as I traded that truck off, it had started a mild miss like another coil going bad.

Thanks, those links are helpful.

I was thinking about putting this dohc 4.6 into my 1956 Ranchwagon, but man, that dohc motor is HUGE. I'll have to do some careful measuring to see if Imcan cram it in there. The Ranchwagon now has a 5.0 HO with AOD trans. Any info on wether the 4.6 will bolt onto the early AOD? The trans is mechanically controlled with no computer override.
