I am in the process of rebuilding my 401 AMC.  I have been using the Edelbrock 500 cfm carbs on the dual 4 intake.  I need to get the carbs cut back some.  When we did the teardown the heads where gummed up alot and my engine builder is not good at carbs by his own admission.  I have two calibration kits for the 1404 carbs.  Anyone have any experience with these?

on this page of the edelbrock site map ..

there are 2 links for your carb..

you will probably want to download both..  one is a installation manual.. the other a tuning manual...   they will help with your search for the proper tune.

while you have the carbs apart...

you might want to note which exact parts are in which....

measure the height the wire diameter of the primary rod power valve springs.. as that is going to be a serious tuning component... if you want to get some kind of fuel economy from a dual carb tunnel rammed 401...

Edelbrock setup carburetor spring assortment. Includes 3" HG (blue), 4" HG (yellow), 5" HG (orange), 7" HG (pink), and 8" HG (plain). Sold per package. Mfg. Part No.   1464

are you planning on installing some oxygen sensor bungs on the exhaust to allow you to monitor the exhaust for fine tuning...

you can always remove the oxygen sensors later...   put in a plug perhaps with a threaded blind hole.. then some kind of polished bung cover held down with a stainless flat head allen screw...

if you don't want to cut into your collectors.. you can create or buy short collector extensions.. that have oxygen sensor bungs in them..

air fuel ratio displays can be had for 35 bucks for narrow band 30 buck sensors...
