Toyota was replacing entire frames on their trucks due to rust, but I don't know how Vettes are built, so maybe they're right. Time for someone to get a good deal on a newer Vette if they can weld AL?

Exotics are silly. The reason it is totaled is because it was built in a way that created that vulnerability. Use once, throw away mentality. Other parts like that may exist on it. GM must have concluded that repair circumstances cannot be controlled closely enough to warranty a repair, and I would venture that the cracked part might not be just plain Ford truck body aluminum.

A BMW came in a shop I was at, it hit a curb and drove a little funny Turned out that it split one strut tower. The only legal repair was to chop off everything ahead of the firewall and glue on new. Front structure replacement suggested for any variations adding up to one millimeter.

just amazed that something we ALL have done created a totaled vehicle

i wonder if covering the "fragile" areas with a sacrificial panel to protect would be an option for Chevy to consider for the future Corvettes

I suspect that's a pretty highly stressed area since it's right where the rear suspension kick up starts. Looks like it ought to be fine to weld the crack then weld another plate over the top. Someone will do it, and whoever buys it will probably never notice the difference. It will never be Bloomington Gold, though, will it?
