The knurreld part of my '47 Ford rear axle wheel stud have spun and the area is now a smooth hole . Can I tack weld the wheel studs to the axle?

Yes Or you can find a stud with a larger knurl, and install that.

Any idea what would cause this?

The open drive  banjo I used.

Ok. The original studs in the rear were swaged in place. Therefore the knurl did not fit as tight as manufactured. Often replacement studs fit loose in the knurl, and can spin.  Using the correct stud, and swaging it usually cures the problem. I have tack welded the studs in the past, and it seems to work fine.

That'll work. Thanks Frank
