My son has a '74 Ford Ranchero that had a 400" engine. It is history. He has an early '90 Mustang 5.0 engine to go in. Questions are...
From EFI to carb.. same cam?
Motor mounts..what to use?
Will the 5.0 bolt to the auto trans from the 400"?
Harmonic balancer OK?
Serpentine to V pulleys? He wants to use the old air, power steering, etc.
Water pump?
Rotation?
The 5.0 engine has this number stamped in it...27897126..does this help?
Thank you in advance for any and all help.
I'm in BC and he's in Hamilton, ON.

The 400 uses the 460 trans bolt pattern. Use a 302 AOD.

You should be able to use stock '74 302 engine and frame mounts.

You will probably need to use the complete accessory drive system from a belt drive 302, including water pump.

If you use the existing flex plate and balancer, you should not have any problems.

The cam should work OK, but why not take this opportunity to upgrade to a better one?

If it's a C4 type trans, you can just switch to a 5.0 bell housing. If it is, and you do so, save the old bell, they are gold. If it's an FMX, you can still change the bell and use the trans, but 302/5.0 bells are hard to find for a FMX, late 60s full size did use them.  It's also possible it's a C6, cast in bell. For that you will need another trans.
Welcome to hell. Here's your accordion.

What type of trans did the 400 have behind it,if its a FMX it might be the small block bolt pattern and I am looking for one of those 400s if it does have the small block bolt patttern and you are not going to use it.

to tell the differenced between the transmissions...

there are about a million different ways to swap motors in that body style...

he really might want to think about an AOD with the 5.0...  1982 to 1992 or so... i forgotten what year they finally went to ecm control on fords...

but thats just my opinion...

From EFI to carb.. same cam?       YES ... it will work

Will the 5.0 bolt to the auto trans from the 400"?  nope...

use everything from the 5.0...    the only think thats going to be different is the power steering hoses..     you might have to swap to a different oil pan and oil pump pick up...

the 90 should have a reverse rotation belt system...  which has the water pump and fan turning the other way...  which is OK...  they work great...

if he wants the AC removed.. one can get from dorman a compressor elimination kit.. that replaces the compressor with a pulley of the same size... in the right location..

here is a picture of it from another company

Harmonic balancer OK?    NOPE
Serpentine to V pulleys? He wants to use the old air, power steering, etc.
Water pump?  USE THE 5.0 stuff..
Rotation?  everything but the water pump and fan is normal rotation on a 5.0..     none of the 400 stuff will fit easily...

one more thing.. and the most important... this swap has been covered by several magazines...

From what I have read there is a 400 that has the small block bellhousing bolt pattern,it was only made a couple years and was bolted to a FMX trans and was installed in the mid size cars and I seen pics of it.  I think it was built in 73 and 74 and was installed in torinos and montegos and could of included the ranchero so if it has the FMX trans look at the bellhousing bolt pattern.  I have been looking for one of these blocks to put in my 65 custom 500 instead of building a 351 with a stroker kit since I wont have to change bellhousings since I have a manual trans and a regular 400 would require a 69 or 70 429 bellhousing that is hard to find, why pay the money for a stroker kit when there is a 400 block with the small block bellhousing pattern.

I'm not a 400 expert but the only ones I've seen are 400M versions that take the 460 bellhousing.

The 400s usually have the 460 bellhousing bolt pattern but in 73 and possibly 74 there was a 400 block made with the small block bolt pattern if a FMX trans was put behind it,dont know the reasoning with it but if thats the one he has I would be interested in it if its not going to be reused and that motor was used only in the mid sized cars.  I seen pics of in on some Ford website and I think it also has 3 of the 4 bolt bosses for small block motor mounts but they are not drilled.
