Diff Cover Gasket Sealer

Had a small leak in the rear axle cover area of my 2002 Ford SuperCrew F-150 with 5.4 liter.

It's the 12 bolt model similar to what the F-250's use.

Anyway, pulled the cover and see that Ford Motor Co. used some type of RTV in place of a gasket.

I have a Fel-Pro gasket for it and was wondering what some of you guys use for sealer?

Got CopperCoat, non-hardening Permatex and black RTV (fresh) in stock.

The last time I changed the lube in my E150 rear end I used a thin layer of copper RTV on both sides of the gasket. It's just what I had on the shelf and it doesn't leak. I'm sure permatex would work too. Mine didn't have a gasket from the factory either....just rtv.

I use Ultra Blue Permatex RTV.

I use silicone from Home Depot in a regular sized caulk tube..

warning... never use a high speed rolock tool to clean the gasket mating surface... the abrasive will get into the rear end... you won't like the result.. as its hard to hum to the HUM from the bearings failing..

one might also find a quarter size or larger super magnet and stick it inside the bottom of the case... this will pull all the metal particles to it... the oil will stay cleaner longer also..

Lots of choices and most of them say, "Ultra."

I figured with all the new - to me - stuff out there I'd ask.

Now I see why the parts guy was blowing dust off the Fel-Pro box....

I used Permatex ultra copper rtv with Royal Purple synthetic lube. Is that a no no? Does synthetic do something to rtv?

No more that regular lube. The reason I use the ultra Blue, it will self seal if oil seeps into it.

don't know for sure, just have a lot of trounle with the syn stuff getting by the ford covers for some reason.
if you've got the time,let the stuff dry overnight and it'll prolly be ok.
i never do have the time(line work, ya know..) if i can let it sit for an hour, that's a lot!
why ultrablack?
cause i can't stand blue snot hanging out...or red....
