The nice thing about sucking the fluid out or using a drain plug is to get most of the fluid out of the pan before dropping it.  That's a lot easier than dropping it part way and having it go all over the place.

I swapped out the trans pan on my 2006 Silverado for a pan with a drain plug.

Every 2nd or third  oil change on the engine I drop the trans drain plug , let it run out,  then add fresh fluid ;  about 4 quarts.  With only 18 k miles on the truck , I do not change the oils too often.

Quote from: "57larry"why change the fluid if you're not going to change the filter too ?
50 miles on a rebuilt trans. line let go and pumped 5 qts. out. I fixed it, filled it and drove it home. Didn't seem to do any harm, still red and no burn smell. Just thought I'd change about 25% more of the fluid.
