Rodder's Roundtable / Suede paint finish
January 19, 2006, 12:07:36 AM
Go to the hardware store, and look at interior colors. They are mostly flat, which makes it easy to eyeball them, and you can get color chips to take home.

Once you find a color you like, have your automotive paint store match and custom mix it for you. Then cover it with PPG Flex n Flat, and it will be flat but UV protected, unlike primer.

Hope that helps...

Here is my car in Flex n Flat:

POR-15 also makes a top coat that is UV resistant. It sprays like an enamel, and it gets very hard. Then you can buff the bejesus out of it.

I used it successfully on my suspension parts:

Quote from: "southfork"You need to get that coupe on the road, Rolf!  You got me and a bunch of others cranked up on putting nailheads in our A's, and until you finish the job, we are all kind of on hold!

Ha, yes, I DO need to get that coupe on the road. I can't wait !

I am busy doing the plumbing (fuel etc) and electrical, enough to start it, I just want to hear it run before I install radiator and grille shell. I am kinda superstitious, I guess.

We moved, so I am working from a temporary location until we get a permit to build a shop (6 mo ! ) so it's going slow, but that's OK, it bloody soggy here in WA state right now.

Thanks for all the positive feedback, it kicks me in the butt to keep charging ahead.

Bib, Old Sub, nice to see you guys here too. I figured some folks would cruise "both sides of the tracks"

enjenjo: Well, old is relative, I suppose.

I am 47 years old, sometimes when getting out of bed in the morning I feel old, but when I have a firm grip on a 4 speed shfter, one hand on the wheel, and the clutch is about to be popped, then I'm sixteen !

Thanks again, I will be surfing by often.

Thanks for the welcome.

Really, both the truck and the Impala are true 20 yarders, but fun drivers. I have built my share of cars with expensive paint jobs, and I never drove them enough.

Craftsman: It is actually a "faux" suede. It is custom mixed color, then covered in flex-n-flat. That way it UV protected.

Nobleman: The engine is a 1965 425, "disguised" as something older with the help of a generator from a 1958, and also the older style valve covers.

Trans is a 4speed, and a 9inch rear, hung in ladder bars.

I am not trying to duplicate a barn find or anything, but I am having fun trying to stay "period correct" on the things that shows, with old style wiring, slotted screws etc...

This is the most rewarding project I have done, I can't wait to turn the key for the first time.

Thanks again, I look forward to meet more hot rodders.

Hello,

I live in Washington state, I moved here from Sweden in 1982. I am a certified old car nut. As I get older, it seems like my cars get older as well. My "newest" car is now a 1958 Impala.

I am currently building a traditional style Nailhead powered Model A on '32 rails. It's been a long journey, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I am counting on driving this car this spring.  I am always looking for ideas and advice from fellow rodders.

The current project:

You can see the build-up here if you are interested:

My current driver: Original paint with plenty of wear, but a good twenty yarder. Currently it has a 283, but I just obtained a 348, a tri power and a 4speed. I will work on this once the hot rod is done.

My shop truck. Another twenty yarder

Anyway, hope to meet some fellow hot rodders.

Cheers

Rolf
