Rodder's Roundtable / Street legal drag tires
April 13, 2007, 09:43:11 PM
It seems like I've asked this before, oh well thats what happens smelling to much burning rubber and now for the question!  I'm wanting to buy a pair of drag tires for the el camino that I can drive on legally and will stick when I'm on the drag strip.  Any advice fully appreicated.  I was thinking maybe BF Goodrich G-force and M/T street drag radials.
Thanks, johnny

Rodder's Roundtable / electric fan question
March 25, 2007, 10:28:35 AM
Quote from: "enjenjo"Yes it will work. I would suggest mounting the fans offset so they cover the entire core. And hook up the vacuum advance, that will make more difference than any fans.
I did hook up the vacuum advance and adjusted the timing and idle and it doe's run a tad cooler and when I race I just plug it back up it doe's run alittle faster in the quarter mile (about a third of a second) but for around town hooked is the way to go (no matter what my shop says).  johnny

Rodder's Roundtable / electric fan question
March 25, 2007, 10:08:31 AM
Here goes, I have a large electric straight bladed fan, I forgot the cfm but it was the biggest summit racing had for my car.  Now I've mounted it on the inside of the radiator with the air pulling towards the engine, I have a smaller cfm s-fan that I have room for infront of the radiator.  Will this work cooling the engine more that just one fan?  The engine runs alittle warm now (around 200-210) and was thinking about this.  Any suggestions or comments from you rodders!
Thanks, johnny/el camino   :?

Rodder's Roundtable / Thank you!

Hey guys just wanted to thank yall for all your advice on the radar dector. I decided to go with the passport (blue lites) it had everything that I wanted, for me radar dectors have saved my butt plenty of times, so the 300.00 I spent will be well worth it down the road.
Thanks again, johnny :D

Rodder's Roundtable / Best street slicks?
March 05, 2007, 09:00:49 PM
Quote from: "SKR8PN"Ya.....I get some pretty good hang time
But I make up for the lack of  tire wear when I try to STOP it at the other end
So do they have any groves in the tires at all and cost?    johnny

Rodder's Roundtable / Best street slicks?

Quote from: "enjenjo"You looking for cheater slicks, or DOT drag racing tires?
I guess dot slicks.  My car is a daily driver so what ever has the best traction and still be legal.  I know I won't be bookin down the road and expect to stop like radials do but if theres something out there in the best of both worlds, kinda like having my cake and eating it too.
Make sense?  johnny

Hey guys who's got the best street slicks?   Of course I'm looking for traction first.  I've got 295/50/15 BFG radials now on 10 inch centerline rims.  These tires even though there pretty wide is no good for the drag strip except for burn outs!
Oh and let me thank all you guys for your input on my El Camino timing and NOS and everything!  Got everything dialed in and will try and get it to the dyno very soon then to the strip for some much needed FUN!
Thanks, johnny :)

Rodder's Roundtable / NOS question?
February 24, 2007, 09:50:10 AM
Quote from: "Bruce Dorsi"John,

GET YOUR TIMING RIGHT  BEFORE you play with the nitrous!

If not, things can get VERY expensive!
Thanks Bruce for your help, I really appreciate it!  Got alittle question for ya, the gauges I have right now are el cheapo type and will  be replaced but for now the temp sending unit is hooked up to the intake manifold and keeps giving me false reading and sometimes bounces up to 250 then drop to 180 very quickly.  There is one hot wire and one ground that all 3 gauges use for lighting etc.  Any suggestions there?                    john

Rodder's Roundtable / NOS question?
February 24, 2007, 09:32:46 AM
Quote from: "enjenjo"Ok. as Bruce said, make sure the timing is right, not only at idle, but through the entire curve. In other words. check the total timing. With NOS, you don't want more than 38 to 40 degrees total. If you don't know how to total time an engine, ask.

Next, test the system to make sure it's working. With the NOS armed, and the engine idling, warmed up, accuate the throttle switch by hand without opening the throttle. If the system is working right, the engine should go to about 3,000 rpm, and run good at that rpm, with no popping or stumble. If it pops or stumbles, the fuel pressure may be set wrong, or the filter in the NOS line may be plugged, fix it in either case.

Once you have confirmed that, you can take it for a test drive. Depending on tires, you may get better times staying out of the bottle until second gear. NOS causes the plugs to color orange, doesn't seem to hurt them. Watch the engine temp. NOS usually makes the engine run a bit cooler in the short term, if it's heating, you may be too lean.
Ok I think I got it after timed right and engine ideling at around 750 -900 rpm reach over and activate the NOS swithch on the linkage by hand (not giving it the gas on the linkage) and the rpms should go up to 3000 rpm and run steady.  There is a fuel pressure regulator installed already.
Now I got another question.  If I forget to turn off the bottle while driving, will that hurt the engine?  And say the bottle has been turned on for say 30 minutes and your driving on the interstate can you just arm the NOS by the on/off switch on the dash and floor it at say 70 mph? With hurting the engine?             john

Rodder's Roundtable / NOS question?
February 24, 2007, 01:45:28 AM
Quote from: "enjenjo"Is this a complete system? How is it accuated? A 150 hp system is fairly easy on an engine.
OK  guys I'm sure glad I asked questions first!  So accuated?  Now there is 2, I think there called selenoids hooked up in the  carb spacer.  There is a switch if you will, located on the linkage which is activatated at WOT and a power on switch that was installed on my dash. and that's about it, I think.
Also yall was wanting make sure the timing is correct before I start playing with NOS, now I have the engine set at 8 degrees advance and I still have the vacuum advance plugged off, BUT tomorrow I will time the engine again with the vacuum hose hooked up right.
I think the system that was installed came from eldelbrock and the guy set it at 100hp for now.  He said if I wanted him to raise it to 150 after I get used to it he could or would.  As yall can tell I'm pretty dumb about Hot Roddin but I'm not to dumb to ask for advice.
Thanks for all yalls advice---------------John
