I had mine 18 years ago, straight from the cath table to the OR. I think they are  less invasive now, I have a great looking scar in the middle of my chest and down my left leg. It's not a cakewalk by any means but not anywhere near as bad as you would think.Do what they say and the discomfort is mostly gone in a couple days. The work continues for as long as you live.

In saskatchewan we pay a $5 per tire recycling fee when tires are purchased.you drop off old ones at any tire shop . there are subsidised (with your $5 /tire fee)companies that recycle them into all kinds of stuff.You could always turn them inside out and make flower pots out of them!

Wife did the pot thing with four of them for me, she had a heck of a time turning them inside out.

Make the shim.

Same problem long enough ago that I forget the details but I made a shim from aluminum flashing .Used it to move the detent out. More coffee may improve my memory.
