Members Rides / My other 46 chevy truck....
December 16, 2006, 10:36:06 AM
Although my other truck is going together in a somewhat traditional style, this truck will be more like an old shop truck but with late model amenities. This one's for the wife so I need to keep things a little nicer. I decided up front I wanted to try a swap to an S-10 chassis and this is alot easier than I would have believed. The only modifications to this point have been to cut off existing bed and cab mounts and a width problem at the front of the cab. This frame bows out right at the firewall which would cause the frame to stick out past the cab. The easy fix is to cut the offending sections out on each side and swap to the opposite side (this is the lo-buck way. You could of course cut this section out all together and replace with tubing). I've had people ask me about the inner fender panels. I haven't tackled this yet but just from looking at how the cab and fenders line up, it would be a cut and fit, trial and error kinda thing. You would probably be better off to fab up new pieces. I will be able to answer questions easier as I get further into the build.

Here's what we have so far...

Again....truck as purchased....

I bet the neighbors were wondering what the heck was going on when the second rusty truck was delivered!

Walt,

Thanks for everything you do over there! You guys are really the unsung heros of today.

If you're ever over at Camp Liberty and you see this knucklehead running around, pat him on the back and tell him his family loves him and misses him more than he'll ever know!!!!

He's my son, Private Daniel Pate, he's only been there a couple of months but it seems more like years. It really sucks you guys won't be home for the Holidays but it will make it that much more enjoyable when you come home!

Thank You soooo  much!!!!

Rodder's Roundtable / A Rusty update....
December 16, 2006, 09:08:21 AM
Just to refresh everyone's memory one of the 46 chevies i'm working on has been lovingly dubbed "Rustasaurus"....for obvious reasons. It's being put together loosely based on what some are calling the Rudy truck. It's been more of a collection of other peoples' leftovers which wound up biting me in the end (pun intended). A friend of mine put the rolling chassis together and with me constanly bringing him different parts than what was originally talked about, we ended with a chassis that is about a foot too short. It's not a hard fix but it does reinforce that old saying "make a game plan and STICK TOO IT!" I guess that explains my new tag line. :D

Enough about my brain phart.....on with the pictures....

Here's Rusty as purchased:

A couple of good friends donated a 33 Hudson frame and 68 Mustang rearend to the project...

After a major investment in Speedway stock and another round of donated parts we have a rolling chassis...

A great deal on a running drivetrain came along and now we're just a draveshaft away from dropping the cab back on for good....

With a cut here, and a cut there, here a cut, there a cut, everywhere a cut,cut..........hey, I couldn't resist  .....

After all the excitement of seeing Rusty back together again, we rolled him outside and reality set in......OOPS!!!.....at least it won't be that hard to cut the frame and add a section to lengthen the wheelbase. We'll strike this one up to a good lesson learned. Measure...measure...MEASURE....then measure again!!!!

This is NOT the look I was after but we do know what to do about it. Hopefully I'll have some updates right after the Holidays when we get him headed back in the right direction!

Stay tuned for more cuttin' and grindin' and weldin' and grindin' and Git'R Done-a-tude!   is that really a word?

Here's a better shot of the back of the cab. As you can see it's rough, but it WAS a sedan.

Thanks for the welcome!!!

David, I think I met you last year at the swap meet. If not, I will at the next one.

40 Chevy, funny you should mentions Stan's. The guys in the club will all be meeting up there in a couple of weeks during the Frosty Wheels show.

Here's the 30 chevy I just bought. It apparantly was a four door sedan at one time and was cut down and made into a truck many years ago.

Hello again,

My name is Butch Pate from Murfreesboro,Tn. I signed on quite a while back as Sport N Woode. I lost track of time, my password, my mind....among other things and haven't been here for a long while. Luckily I got an e-mail from Fat Cat and got hooked back up and online. I have decided to go with my Poor Boy given name of "HAYWOOD".

I'm still working on the two 46 chevy trucks and have added a 30 chevy truck and a 40 chevy truck to the collection.

It's good to be back !!!  8)

I was hoping to have more pictures for my next reply but work has kept me away from the truck. Thanks again for your comments.
Enjenjo.....If I could get Brett up there to help you i'd send him right away!

And now for KustomLincolnLady, Denise and anyone else that might be able to make it down this way.....Late breaking News.

Rodder's Roundtable / **UPDATE**
March 11, 2005, 09:24:21 AM
After what seemed like forever my good friend Brett was in the neighborhood with his service truck and pulled the cab for me.......WHILE I WAS AT WORK!  I was really surprised when I got home and saw the carnage. We're ready to start on the frame now. I've got a 41 Mercury front suspension, 28 model A grill shell, a Caddy 331 motor and tranny, the 46 Chevy cab, a 54 Chevy dash and a 64 Chevy II rear end. I'm guessing i'll have to refer to it as the CADaFORDaCHEVaLLAC!!! =-)

I'll start with the before pic and show you the rust pile i'm starting with.

Thanks guys. I've finally got the cab ready to come off. I'll find out then if it's hiding on the frame rail or not.

Rodder's Roundtable / Search for the lost VIN

Anyone know where the VIN number would be stamped on a 46 Chevy truck frame. I have an I.D. plate on the firewall of one of the trucks but it is worn and you can't read anything on it. ANY info would be appreciated.

Rodder's Roundtable / Dang it......another new guy....
January 12, 2005, 12:38:37 AM
Thanks to all of you for the kind words and an extra special THANKS to Denise for the picture.

We've got the 2x3 tubing ready and should have the cab on the floor tomorrow night. So build up pictures of the rusty ol' roadster should be coming soon. I'm looking for the front suspension pieces while waiting to hear back about a possible motor and tranny. If things work out, i'll be running a '51 Caddy 331. Should be interesting.
