Yesterday our car club, the Gig Harbor Cruisers did a (socially sanctioned and distanced) group tour of 36 classic cars to bring some smiles to residents and staff of 6 retirement homes and St Anthony's hospital. Somehow King 5 news heard about it and had their news helicopter stationed overhead, with broadcast on the evenimg news. if you look carefully, circled is our 1932 Chevy Piloted by Dave with navigation assistance

Rodder's Roundtable / Bonehead rookie screwup

Thanks for the suggestions. Problem solved.... I called Howell and talked to their very helpful tech guy named Cory. It turns out that he recognized the serial numbers on the ECU as coming from them! And sure enough that jogged my memory to the fact that the fella I bought the engine from 10 years ago mentioned something about Howell. Cory said if ancillary systems come on but no CEL or fuel pump, 90% odds the ECu is fried. So, I bought a used one from eBay with same code, plugged it in and whammo, started right up! Yeehaa now I can sleep tonight.

Jumping A and B with paper clip does not activate any codes ... Turn Key On the CEL light does not light up at all. It light does not come on because there is positive 12 volt power to ports A and B - no negative. The bulb is good - I disconnected one leg from the bulb, jumped it to negative and the light comes on. The only other wire in the port is red. I followed an online tutorial years ago to strip the harness and naturally cant find it again. Sigh.

Hmmm I think I have one of those old readers in the bottom of the toolbox.... gave a series of beeps. Do you have a tutorial how to decode the beeps, key on / key off etc? Thanks

Hi, I have been lurking for a while as I have undertaken some personal projects and care for family.
The 32 chevy has been feeling neglected in a cold garage, so to make her feel better on a recent nice day I decided to take her for a drive.... battery dead....
Got the new battery and contorted myself to wrestle it into its hatch buried behind the seats. Hooked it up and got a little flash across the terminals. That should have warned me but no, fasten the terminals...turned the key and the fuel pump screamed in distress! Whoa.... thats not right.... checked the terminals and ya shure, reversed the polarity. Fuel pump, must have been running backwards. *. Now when I turn the key the guages actuate, starter cranks but no fuel pump and CEL light off.
The motor is an early 90's Chevy 4.3 with factory TBI injection, with factory harness. 4 speed manual trans.
Here is what I found so far:
IGN fuse was popped, replaced with new 10 amp fuse. All other fuses are good.
CEL light has 12 volt positive on both terminals.(Key on) If I jump one terminal to ground light comes on.
I'm afraid I toasted the ECM, but I'm sure appreciative of troubleshooting ideas before sending the ECM to Centech.

Rodder's Roundtable / Auto trans question
January 05, 2018, 03:44:20 PM
I have an 07 Colorado and have had zero problems other than normal wear. At 107,000 miles it still has the original brakes! It uses no oil and gets 22 mpg hwy. no, its not like my duramax..... keep in mind that GM designed it as a daily commuter type truck, not a carryall. It wont carry thousands of pounds but it sure is comfortable to drive and easy to park.

Rodder's Roundtable / Flat tow Ford aod trans?
July 18, 2017, 08:07:29 PM
Thanks for your responses. I just put new ball joints in so will be having alignment done. The '56 has original suspension with new bushings, sway bar, etc and sits 2" lower than stock because of the Granada spindles. Wheels / tires are 225 -70 / 16.
The car originally had manual steering so there may be a limited amount of caster available. (It currently has a bit of tendancy to wander) components are tight but I always seem to need to add steering wheel input on straight roads.
When I take it to the alignment shop the first thing they ask is what specs I want. Based on your experience, what would you advise for settings?

Hiya, I havent posted for a while but continue to lurk. Its amazing what I can learn here by osmosis.
Question: we now have a motor home and I'd like to tow my 56 Ranchwagon as an occasional dinghy behind the landyacht. The '56 is powered by a 5.0 H.O with AOD trans. Does anyone know wether the AOD can be towed 4 wheels down with a tow bar without harming the trans?

I was in AUS earlier this year and was really impressed with some of the AUS built ford and GM cars. So, if aus production is stopped what cars will be sold there? All jap and korean? Or will US built cars be imported?

We saw in the new year by going for a cruise to Port Gamble, about an hour from home. Port Gamble is a real old town in our far northwest corner of the USA. It was founded in 1853 and was the home of a large logging / lumber mill for the next 149 years. Now it's just a quiet town at the end of the road.
This was our first road trip in the Ranchwagon since driving 6400 miles from the Seattle area to Chicago, then down Route 66 to Albuquerque and home...6400 miles. The car then Was on exhibit for most of 2015 in the Lemay car museums' Wagons on Route 66 exhibit.

A 200r4 works well too. The case is a lot smaller than a 700r4.

Rodder's Roundtable / Ford 5.0 EFI problem and a question
January 14, 2015, 01:24:04 PM
Ah, that is a great idea about the pony tank. I did notice that when I opened the hood after the engine stalled the underhood temp was real hot. The water temp gauge was about 210 degrees but under the hood felt hotter. That could have overheated the gasoline in the return line.
I'll switch the return line back to gas tank and let you know if the problem goes away next summer.
