Rodder's Roundtable / Speedometer cable gear
July 24, 2019, 01:51:29 PM
Hi Frank, the speed0 cable goes over the mainshaft.  We did not check the helix though.  Does anyone know the correct part number of the mainshaft drive gear?

My truck still has the dropped solid axle.  I have given the Jag front end some thought and if you have a question, maybe I can answer.

1  You need a rear sump oil pan
2  Since the frame will not fit in to the c'mbr, cut a large longitudinal notch in the c'mbr on each side and box for strengrh.
Drop the frame into the notches and mount as factory

I was going to make a frame mock-up out of 2 x 6's to work with.  Try making a mock-up and set it on the c'mbr and you'll see what I mean

I still have an XKE and An X6 front end.  I also have an XJ12 rear end.  I would sell all of them.

Rodder's Roundtable / Speedometer cable gear
July 23, 2019, 01:54:50 PM
Hello to everyone.  Been awhile since I last posted.  I am having trouble getting my speedometer to work on my 56 F100, 312, 57 car Fordomatic.  Replaced the speedo head with a repro, installed a new cable and gear, and it doesn't seem to mesh with the gear on the trans.  Mech removed tailshaft  to see if gear was tight,  it was. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Rodder's Roundtable / KUDOS to the metal workers
October 27, 2018, 03:03:13 PM
Over the years I have watched some members working on rusted metal hulks, Cameros. Mustangs,  and currently the Model A, and the Ford F100.  The work you fellows are doing is fantastic.  I shudder to think what this work would cost at a Pro shop, if they could even do it. So KUDOS To all you metal workers and Rod mechanics. :b-d:

Rodder's Roundtable / Speedometwer cable 57 Fordomatic

Quote from: "enjenjo"Does the Fordomatic have a threaded end for the cable, or a bullet type end like a C4?

do you see the end you need here? http://www.speedometercablesusa.com/cables_and_housing_assembly.html

Long time no see.

Frank, it has a bullit end.  I'm trying to figure out whether to use the early one or the c4 type.  When you originally got my truck running with the early type, speedo lasted about 1 mile and pulled the gear right off.  I switched to the c4 type that was installed last, worked for about 30-40 miles and then stopped.  In the link above it shows both types in the catalog of trans ends.

:(  :(HELP  I have a 56 f100 with 57 312/fordomatic.  I am having trouble with speedo cables.  I have tried the 56 type and the later c4 type, both work a little, then stop working.  The 56 type sucked the trans end gear right off.  Anybody know whats correct??

Haven't posted for some time, so hello to everyone.

[/b]Hey Crosley, I use a fluorescent from Home Depot, Bay something.  It puts out 100-120 Watts equivalent.  Only a 6 foot cord though.  After a couple years the transisters inside loosen up, and I just replace it.

Rodder's Roundtable / Nasty weather!

 HERE IN Detroit, we have broken the record for one season of snow.  The most snow in over 135 years, 93.2 inches.  I know there many places that get more, but this a record for Detroit.  I thought maybe the coldest, but only about the 10th coldest.  Have a pleasant summer!! 8)

Rodder's Roundtable / Rear suspension on a '37 Ford

The Jaguar sedan used 4 coil over shocks in the rear ( 4,000 lbs? ).  I would think that you could  use a set of coil overs since you are basically set up for them, just making sure to use adequate mounts and bolts.  I don't know what the shear strength of a grade 8  1/2" bolt is but it has to be close to 100,000 lbs.

Rodder's Roundtable / V6 vs V8 gas mileage
October 19, 2012, 03:43:30 PM
`I had a couple of Thunderbird Turbo coupes with the 2.3 litre Pinto 4 cyl engine.  They put out v8 power on the turbo, but cruising at lite throttle was  like running the Pinto eng.  There was a Ford engineer who raced a 2.5 litre turbo coupe that ran under 12 secs and would pull the front tires off the ground.

So the deal is,  when cruising on the smaller displacement engine,  you get better mileage, and when on the turbo boost, you get V8 power.  The wave of the future!!

Rodder's Roundtable / caster
May 04, 2012, 04:30:30 PM
When I was a suspension designer at Chrysler, we used negative caster for manual steering for less effort, and positive caster for stability with power steering.  Since your car was originally manual, you should take this into consideration.

Rodder's Roundtable / Good tires
July 31, 2011, 04:18:09 PM
I have been looking for tires for my '56 F-100 at Tire Rack.  It is getting very hard to find good performing tires in 15" size.  I think that before long it will be extremely hard to find good tires in less than 17".  I don't like rubber band tires for my truck.  I would'nt mind going to 16" steelies, but very expensive .  Presently I am looking at Hankook  215/70x15 front and 235/75x15 rear.
