Rodder's Roundtable / Ford 9" bearings?
October 16, 2020, 04:35:18 PM
Quote from: "kb426"I went and dug through the file on the 72. In the last 2 years I have used All Powersports Drivetrain, user id 7079rp and Trendsauto.
All powersports sold the spacer separate. The invoice dated in 2018 was $69 for bearings and the spacer kit. I purchased 8.8 parts from Trendsauto. The parts were similar in both kits. It looks to me like Timken and Koyo are the 2 most common bearings used in the kits. The 9" kit was for a 28 spline rear with the 2.891 bearing.

OK, Thanks..

Rodder's Roundtable / Ford 9" bearings?

Quote from: "kb426"There's more than 1 size of bearings in case you were unaware of that fact. I've been buying those listed with Timken bearings and a solid crush sleeve on ebay. I have better long term results with the solid spacer and shims instead of using the crush sleeve.

Yeah, I know there are more than one style.  I just figured some bearing supplier would have a cross over that would tell him what bearing set you would be for a specific rear end setup.  You say you have been using a seller on eBay.  I do like the solid pacer over the crush sleeve.  Any particular seller?

Is there a place that sells a "Bearing Kit" for a Ford 9" rear axle assembly?  I want to O'haul this 3:70, 9" I have but I'd like to get all the bearings from the same place.  Has anyone had dealings with a supplier that is dependable?

Rodder's Roundtable / Ford third member ID Tag
August 25, 2020, 02:06:02 PM
Quote from: "kb426"I'm using the tag as an example. From 1960 to 1970, the 1st digit is the year, the alphabet letters were month and date according to the info I found. If your tag is the same layout, that should be correct.

The series of tags I have seen have the ring gear size right after the ratio,
which would be the second entry on the second line, again, right after the ratio.....

Rodder's Roundtable / Ford third member ID Tag

Quote from: "kb426"1968, March 3rd, is what I think it is.

Thats an 8" housing in the picture.  However, with the WDC-AT model Number,
it's a 9" from a ford passenger car from '66 to '69. or a Mercury '66-'67, or
a'67 T-bird.  It's a 3:00 ratio open, 28 spline.

Quote from: "enjenjo"If you can reach the bottom carrier bolt with a socket, it's an 8" carrier. If you can not, it's a 9" carrier.

No it's a 9" housing for sure. Box end only.. It still doesn't explain the 8 CC for the ring gear size on the production tag

I took a picture of the tag, but I have forgotten how
to reduce the size to post it.  I tried but it got kicked out.

Rodder's Roundtable / Ford third member ID Tag

Quote from: "kb426"Did the zeros not get stamped properly and it's an 8 inch????
If it's an 8" it has been changed, and I'm not sure you can put an 8" gear on a 9" carrier.  Everything points to a 9" with 28 spline axles in an F-100 PU.  I just looked again, it is definately an 8 CC the "C'S" are very pronounced.  I'll know for sure when I open it up.  Gotta wait till Laura passes over.  Looks like it is going right up the Sabine river....My backyard.

Rodder's Roundtable / Ford third member ID Tag

This is a different series from what I have.  My gear size on the tag is listed as 8CC?????  Everything points to a 9".  Like I said my gear ratio code is WDM-U, which is an open 3:70.  Where your tag example shows the Plant where produced my tag series shows Vehicle and ratio.  I have not seen a code tag like yours.  Must be late model stuff.  I want to know what 8CC on my tag stands for.

I picked up a Ford 9" about a week ago, and I'm confused about the Tag description.  I have not stripped it yet, only took off the brake drums.  The tag has the 2 lines of stamped code.

The first line has  WDM-U, which shows to belong to a Ford F-100 '63-'76.
Second line reads 3.70 Which is an open 3:70 gear, Where it should show 9 for a 9 inch, it has 8 CC the last 3 numbers is the date code 3-0-2.  I have a couple others that have 8 00 for the 8 inch gear, and one that is 8.7, which is the 8.75 inch.  I just don't understand the 8CC on this one.

Rodder's Roundtable / Primer Paint
August 01, 2020, 08:56:10 AM
Quote from: "50 F1"Dusty  I seen that show last weekend I think. I am pretty sure they said it was self etching primer.

Mike

I missed that part I guess.  It's bound to be "Self Etching" but they called it something else.
Since then I have found several different primers that finish up with a green color and the same results.
I just "Googled" up the color green primer and several came up.  TNX for your interest.

Rodder's Roundtable / Limited Slip

Quote from: "kb426"I found this:
https://www.chevydiy.com/history-and-identification-of-chevy-10-and-12-bolt-chevy-differentials/

I have that article, and I have the book they are referring to,
but I still wasn't clear in how to do it.  Frank came to the
rescue again.  I had completely forgotten about the spacer.

Thanks KB426

Quote from: "enjenjo"You can do it with a ring gear spacer.

I thought that back in the day you could ad spacer.
I haven't heard of anyone doing it lately.  Seems
like alot of things I used to know are hung up
on my Floppy Disc somewhere.

Thanks Frank
