Rodder's Roundtable / New projects
September 15, 2005, 12:24:03 AM
Well I'm still coming along on the 47 Ford woodie.  Chassi is done, imron black with coil overs, 11" disc all around, the LS1 w/4L60e painted, tricked out (they finally got the custom headers right on the 3rd try), computer reprogrammed, new 20 gallon Rock Valley stainless tank with fuel pumped mounted is hardlined in, 9-inch Ford Possi with 3.70 gears, an old S-10 drive shaft cut and installed, Iditit tilt wheel installed and the body epoxy primered.  Now I'm fitting the wood which is a real project as it involves half original wood and the rest new although some of it has been sitting for 12 years ...lots of hand fitting and trimming.  One of these days it's going to be mistaken for a real woodie streetrod.

Then sitting beside it is a 48 Merc Woodie original survivor waiting restoration that I found in Canada.  Less than 1900 of these were manufactured ...it is lowered in the front plus a Pete & Jake setup in back.

Then Friday I drive to Texas to pick up a 41 Ford woodie that belonged to this guys grandpa.  It's been sitting in storage since 1956 ...never started or moved.  Don't know what I'm going to do with it yet.

So, there is nothing here a few thousand hours won't solve.

Rodder's Roundtable / Car Events Canceled due to Katrina
September 12, 2005, 10:23:37 AM
Quote from: "40chevy"Cal, I have met a few folks from the Arkansas Street Rod Association over the years. Paul Merritt is one of them and someone with a '40 Ford Pickup with a surfboard rack on top that was at Louisville the last two years. My Father worked on the Degray Dam back in the 1960's. I am going to be busy that weekend helping my Mom at an arts and crafts event around the old Courthouse in Vicksburg where she will have a craft booth.
AL

Hi Al,

Had dinner with Paul & Dottie Merritt last week.  He added on to his shop this year and is trying to finish a 34 sedan with a 6.0 Caddy in it.  Roger Felty is the 40 PU guy with surfboard on top.  He is trying to finish a 50 woodie and I'm hard at my 47 woodie project.  Our plan is to caravan with a bunch of other guys out to Wave Crest, the big woodie meet in Encinitas, California (just north of San Diego) next September.  Cal

The Arkansas Rod Run is still on for the first weekend in October at Lake DeGray State Park at Arkadelphia Arkansas (1 hour south of Little Rock).  It's a super event in a beautiful setting and would be a good alternative to some of those cancelled.  It includes, a free cookout Friday night and a casino night Saturday night, plus some nice prizes including a SBC.  It's sponsored by the Arkansas Street Rod Association.  Email me for more info if you're interested.  Cal

Rodder's Roundtable / Just an idea, for better mpg

Most of us didn't get into roddin' to save gas ...but it seems a little less foot would make more difference than anything else.  Natually, you could do something more drastic like changing those gears down from 3.90, 3.70. etc., but at some point she stops being a rod and moves over to just another economical ride!   Cal

Rodder's Roundtable / Holiday in the USA
August 01, 2005, 10:11:50 AM
Simon,

In Memphis you can go by Graceland and see Elvis' car collection and the rest of his digs too.  Also Memphis is the home of the Blues (Beale Street), and great barbeque too (The Rondevous, Corkey's, etc, etc.).

Vintage Air Gen II is the way to go.  Cost a little more but worth it IMHO.

And do you think any 2 of those drivers are telling the same story?  Can any of them agree on exactly what happened and who was to blame?  It only takes one inexperienced guy with a wallet and ego bigger than his common sense.  Sad to see such nice rides piled up!  Cal :(

I went the July 4th weekend, showed my retired ID and was given a 10% coupon that I used to buy a new super fan for the shop.  No problems or questions.  Cal
