Rodder's Roundtable / Glad you are ok
March 21, 2012, 06:17:09 PM
Don,
Glad you and family are safe! Right through your back yard? Do you have a basement?

I hope your home owner insurance works for you.

Rodder's Roundtable / Gear and motor
January 28, 2012, 11:09:21 PM
I have a 350 small block I am going to use to help keep it reliable and easy to fix, and help keep the cooling issues down.

I don't know yet what is in the Dana 70 if that's what you mean by "gear". Being from a motor home I'll bet it's up there in ratio?

I am going to use a TH400 for the tranny. I have it and just need to get it rebuilt.

Rodder's Roundtable / Tow Tow Tow your boat
January 28, 2012, 08:55:11 PM
I am building my own two vehicle with my 58 Dually. I have a Dana 70 dually rear end out of a motor home and am adapting that to a 3/4 ton frame from 72. That newer frame gets me independent suspension, power steering and disc brakes up front. TH400 going to get rebuilt to be put in it.

The only major big ticket items I need is a custom HD radiator and a gas tank to put in the frame. Oh, and likely an A/C unit?

I am sure you could make a nice classic tow vehicle, and even put in a diesel or LS1 if you wanted?  I know, cheaper to buy a used one. True! But a classic would fit in with all you do and would be done right!

Rodder's Roundtable / Congrats!
January 28, 2012, 08:42:20 PM
Congrats Frank!  I am probably going to be in the market for something similar within the next year or two. I like the idea of having a generator in one, and some extra space.

They can make a nice "dog house" to get out of the house to ...or an external "man cave" in some cases? Run some other hobby stuff out of there when the car is in the garage?

Anyway I will be wanting at least 5200 lb axles and brakes on both :) Oh and since I'll be moving to Texas, I would want an A/C unit ...or I can put one on.

I like the fact that there's a driver's side exit on that one too!

Hey Don,
Lucky you! I am working on the "Honey-Do" list and getting everything ready for winter here. Too much work and not enough play for this boy. Retirement is looking better and better to me!

Post some pics if you can?

Rodder's Roundtable / Same as S-10?
February 02, 2011, 05:09:32 PM
Does anyone know if that's the same steering column that the S-10 truck uses? I have one that I may want to rebuild before I use it in my project.

I am sure I will want to re-wire it anyway...where would you get parts?

I just now seen this. I'm not sure how good a job I would have done, but if ever I can help with anything say the word! You have helped me plenty and I appreciate it!

Well I KNOW it has a freeze plug leaking, and there's a vibration somewhere...not sure why. It doesn't run too bad other than that but I am in the middle of a major tear down and frame swap out. I will follow this by stripping down the body to bare metal, do the minor patch work/repair needed, body work and paint it myself.

It has a manual tranny. Haven't traced that vibration down yet but the condition of the clutch as well as the engine are unknown other than functioning "fairly well".

Rodder's Roundtable / Quote
December 08, 2010, 01:13:15 AM
Yeah that's the place I got the quote from. I know there's a small machine shop in Beavercreek that I may use if I can get help with assembly. I have a mechanic friend in Indiana I may talk into coming over, but not sure of his experience with these engines. Some good info on things to watch out for in here. I'm not real knowledgeable on engine rebuilding details and the unique things about these W motors, but I understand the basics.

Rodder's Roundtable / Engine
November 28, 2010, 08:20:25 PM
I believe I ran the numbers and found it to be a truck engine. This will be in a 1 ton dually with low gearing so it don't have to be a high performance engine. Just run and be reliable.

WOW that one over at the HAMB looks like a fairly good deal ....depending on how much you can trust the guy...but how much abuse had it taken? I wasn't sure if this guy selling it said that HE wen through it or what. Anyway, not sure I could come up with that sum right now or I could get this one rebuilt ;)

Ok sounds like with those rings there are some things I need to watch out for. Leaning back towards having it rebuilt for me, but I will have to save up a while.

Thanks guys,
