Rodder's Roundtable / lowering a 41 Ford coupe
April 14, 2006, 05:39:32 PM
BTW, look at the pic by my name. That was my old 48 coupe. I'd love the 41 to sit like that.
The 48 was sub'd with a 69 camaro clip, and a matching r/e.

I just can't go through the expense of the sub, or MII right now.

Thanks everyone

Wow, Thanks for all the great replys.

I have alot to ponder.

I'll have to look around, because I don't where to buy longer shackles..maybe the local spring shop will have them.

The new shackles and a poises spring sounds good, but so does the speedway c/m.

Hmmm...

Thanks again

I guess I don't know what you mean by a wishbone drop?

As for the speedway dropped c/m, if I use that and just a poises spring, will that take me down 3-4 inches? Then I can skip the 4" drop axle?

I'm not too familiar with this stuff. Most of all my cars/trucks in the past were either already sub'd, or MII.

I wanted to go alittle cheaper here. I can't afford to do a sub or MII currently(not with buying the car). And it sits WAY too high for my taste.

And it already has a 9", but it sits about 3/4" to far forward, and has no blocks, so I'm going to machine my own 3" lowering blocks with a offset pin to relocate the axle back 3/4"..

Follow any of that? haha  I sometimes ramble on..

Hey guys(and girls)

I haven't been around alot. Had a pc melt-down.

Anyway, Anyone talk to me about dropping a 41 ford cpe.
I don't want a MII,  or a subframe.

It has a 289/C4, and a 9", but the bones are not split.

I'd like to drop it about 5" in the front.

Any opinions, methods, experience to share.

I was told to go 4" dropped ibeam, posies reverse eye spring would do it, and I wouldn't have to split the bones...

Opinions?

Talk to me. I've nevr done this.

Thanks all

Grumpy, why don't I just buy yours. I never seem to have enough time to finish anything of my own. PM me maybe we can work it out.

Box the frame? I don't know about that.
I got a buddy who's had a 350 in a stock chassis 52 p/u and never had a problem.
Me, I won't bother doing that because I'm hoping the next one will be a 235/6  3spd truck.

Ahhh...fenton headers through smittys sound oh so good with a six!

Here's my 53 GMC I sold last year.
it was a brand-new, frame off everything new truck.
subframed, BBC/auto., 9in. rear, nice shiney straight black paint with flames, wide whites, 53 Olds flippers, oak bed, etc. etc..

It was awesome. But I hated it. I couldn't just drive it and enjoy it. It was a constant chore cleaning, dusting, couldn't drive it to work, or any stores.

So I took it to a few shows, and after 8 weeks of being finished, I off'd it.

The front bumper and valance weren't on it in these pics.

Anyway, it's all in what you want.

Ok. That's my truck you pictured.
Well, as for money, depending on what you want.
My truck is subframed with disc brakes, pwr. steering, sbc/auto, camaro rearend, new wiring, new windshield, new radial wide whitewalls, new dual exhaust, tilt wheel, etc.

I can drive it 80mph down the road with no problems. PLUS, it's a functional shoptruck, not a foofoo wanna-be. I've had two buick nailheads and a dyna-flow in the bed at one time. It's a truck!

My truck was made to look like an old beater shoptruck, but is as good as most of these style trucks you see with fancy paint.
I drive it every single day to work, haul swapmeet stuff, parts chase, and take it to shows and cruises.
I just came home from Columbus Goodguys this past weekend. 75+for 170 miles.

Now, I have more into it than I think you want to spend on yours. But, I think I could buy a simialr truck here local that's all stock and lower it some, add tires, exhaust, and get it dependable enough to be a "local" daily driver and have less than 4K into it.

Actually, that's what I plan to do for next year. Because I want to trade my truck off on a 28-34 Ford Hotrod.
If I trade or sell mine, I plan to build one just as I described for daily use.

Did this help any? or am I rambling again!!

I'll get you those answers asap.
I'm in the middle of something right now, but soon.

Oh yeah, here's my buddy's A sedan. He feels the need to park it, and go bare bones.
And his son's freshly built A coupe. Don't let the suede paint fool you on the coupe.

I really love those trucks. And most of the other similarly styled cars at Columbus GG's.

My buddy has a very nice, finished,  chopped and channeled Model A sedan called "Lucifer". Maybe you've seen it in R&C, American Rodder, or elsewhere.
He is bored stiff with it.
He wants to park it and build a "bare bones" hotrod.

Now this is a guy who has built many excellent cars. Can afford whatever he wants, but does all his own work.

He just sees these as more fun right now. More enjoyment, less work.

Just like my truck. I have a "weathered" 54 chevy p/u. Done as a 50's styled shoptruck.
I've had shiney, nicely done cars in the past, but got tired of the constant cleaning, dusting, watching for chain wallets, etc.etc.

My current truck is one I drive every single day to work, we cruise it, drove it 200 miles to GG's at 75mph, but haul engines, and parts, and my kids climb around in the bed, slide off the sides, and we use it at shows to haul people around.
It's way more fun than the shiney expensively flamed 53 GMC I sold last year.

That's why I think alot of these guys are going this route. I enjoy it, and it's more fun to me.

Just my .02

Rodder's Roundtable / Re: Sand
December 26, 2004, 10:17:27 PM
Quote from: "Phil55"Try your local ACE hardware.  I get silica sand there all the time....

I'm going to look into this.

Is there a heat issue with sandblasting?

Should I cover the entire glass area with duct tape except where I need to blast?

Quote from: "rooster"John, what kind of sand? Very interesting post!

I have been using fine silica sand but someone recently posted that it is no longer available.  I have been using out of surplus sand that I had in stock but I am about out, so I will see if I can still buy silica sand locally.

Just get some glass and mess around with it some.

Thanks John.
I will try your idea. I'll call for some silica sand, and see if it's available.

Quote from: "WZ JUNK"Don't you have to have  a kickbutt blaster to do that?

I'll call around and see what the local shops say.

Thanks all...

I use an $80 Harbor Freight type that holds one bag of sand.  It takes about a half an hour of blasting to do a winshield.  I usually cut through front each side to the plastic between the layers.  I use 3M double stick molding tape to tape off the good side of the glass at the cut and then cover the rest of the glass so that the sand will not ruin it.  Practice on an old winshield that you can dig out of a dumpster at most glass shops.[/quote]
Ok. cool.
Do you have to keep the glass cool somehow? The sand doesn't overheat it?
Any other pics of previous cuts?
Thanks a ton..

Quote from: "grumpy"Hi all!  Happy Holidays

I'm playing with a chopped and hardtopped 53 Plymouth currently, and I need to figure out a windshield.

I've asked this elsewhere, and want to hear your opinions too.

Anyone schooled on doing their own, or know where I can get one done on the coast closest to Ohio?

The car is chopped 7 in front and 8 in the back. Pretty severe.

Well, Thanks in advance

I have cut laminated (windshield) with a sandblaster.  Is the rear window tempered or laminate?

This is a poor picture but you can see the round hole in the tinted section of the windshield.  The last time I posted this picture I took a lot of heat for making a hole in a windshield but I just wanted to see if I could do it.

Don't you have to have  a kickbutt blaster to do that?

I'll call around and see what the local shops say.

Thanks all...
