Rodder's Roundtable / Re: Painting Flames Question

I find that laying them out with the fine line plastic masking tape is about as easy as any other method.  I bought a pounce wheel and the chalk dust at a craft store but it really seemed that I could do them about as fast freehand.
I too find that laying them out freehand is easier. What I usually do is rough out one side with a Stabilo pencil and using 3M  1/8th paper tape(I'm not comfortable with either green or blue vinyl tape;too much creep on tight radii)lay out the flame design.Using that as a guide,I lay out the other side.It doesn't have to be dead on accurate but just similar.
I don't spray anymore(for health issues)but I attended a HOK seminar once and the guy who was doing the demo did some really amazing flames using pearls. After masking,he started by spraying in the tips first and gradually working toward the front(main part)of the design. The result?Almost no tape edge at all and he had great coverage!
Every flame job I've ever done has been exactly the opposite and I used to really fight with edge buildup. On his flames, one light coat of clear would've buried the edge with no sanding required!
Most of my flame jobs today consist of laying out and then striping afterwards or doing just stripe flames which I lay out the same way.

Rodder's Roundtable / Re: Any of you guys race R/C cars ?

Quote from: "rick 36dodge"I have been racing R/C cars for about 15 years. The thing I like about them is you don't have to sell the house to afford to race. You also don't have to worry about getting hurt. The guys are the same racers that race full size cars and are just competitive.
Thanks, Rick Harris.

Haven't done any racing with them but have a few.Mostly garage sale finds but have a New Era 1/4 scale Corvette that was factory built(for a raffle)and never run.I traded a couple of pistols for it just because I thought it was neat looking and I like things in miniature.wanted to get a Conley V-8 for it but can't justify the price.Maybe someday when I hit the lottery(if I ever decide to play).Picked up one of those 1/6th scale Minis awhile ago which is kind of neat.
My youngest son lives in Massachusetts and is pretty serious into 1/10 cars.

Currently in semi-retirement. Started out pinstriping when I was 11 years old,did my first car when I was 13 and never looked back.Did a stint in the Navy(1964-67),toured the country for awhile afterwards(due to a failed marriage attempt)finally alighting in Massachusetts(my home state).Worked in a Corvette body shop for awhile, then a Mercedes-Benz dealer(first as a body man, then in parts and eventually as parts manager)for the benefits and still doing striping because I loved it.Married in 71 and managed to stumble thru that for 20 years.Had a son(and lost twins)and a herd of foster children(about 170 give or take)and wrote a book about it.Grew up with my grandparents and finally met my dad(and half-siblings)when I was 44.Got divorced and married my first true love(whom I had met in 65 while in the service)in 93.Been battling cancer for 2 1/2 years(and winning)now.Turned 60 a few weeks ago and enjoying every minute of it.Have a 1955 safari wagon I drive all the time(108K to date),a 1957 Safari(ex-race car)that hopefully will be out soon,a 25th Anniversary T/A that needs to be either sold or torched,a 1991 GMC Syclone that DEFINITELY needs to be torched. My bride has a 1972 Thunderbird(70K one owner AZ car)and our trusty GEO Tracker;oh yeah and our dog Muttley, along with our 3 kids(29,33,and36)and 2 grandkids(10 and 16).Hope I haven't forgotten anyone or anything;CRS ya know!
