Quote from: "48builder"My auto-dark helmet is giving me fits. It has an EQC Journeyman lens, number 11. Sometimes it works great, sometimes not. Often it will not lighten up after it goes dark. I took it out of the helmet and took it inside my house and it seemed to work fine. I'm not sure if maybe there was too much light in my garage with the doors open. Do those auto-dark lenses go bad? I put fresh batteries in it.

Anyway, I just got a coupon from Harbor Freight for their auto-dark helmet. It is $45. I'm a little hesitant about buying something as important as a welding helmet from them. Anybody know anything about their helmet?

My Hobart has flashed me a couple of times, when welding overhead and my fat arm gets in the way of the sensor.
Great to see you at Syracuse Walt.

Rodder's Roundtable / SBC Numbers Question

We were there Saturday. Got there late, ran through the swap meet & went home.
I've got more * projects going "no hotrods, just home improvements" so I haven't had time for anything fun lately.  :(

Rodder's Roundtable / Racing
January 25, 2005, 08:42:08 PM
I went from street racing to legit drag racing to stock cars to go karts.
Got fed up with people buying their way to the front (How's $3500 for a Briggs & Straton 5hp grab you?)
Decided to just play with my hotrods.
In 89 my bud came to me. He wanted to build a stock car, but didn't have a garage.
I told him he could have a stall, but I was done with racing.
I was in the garage every night, and at the track every week. They called me crew chief.
He raced 2 years, and was going to take 1 year off.
He started racing again this year in mini sprints.
Rookie of the year and 7th in points.
Guess who was at the track every week?

In answer to your question Frank, racing is a sickness. Once it's in your blood you can never completely get rid of it.

There is a muscle right below the heart that will cause chest pain.
Stress usally sets it off.
I'd tell you to remove the stress, but since Denice isn't going anywhere, you'll have to find another way!
Glad to hear you're OK bro.
No more salt or fatty foods for you!

Rodder's Roundtable / Some radiator questions

So it's the lack of turbulence, and not the fact that the coolant isn't staying in the radiator long enough to transfer the heat?

QuoteWhat did you replace it with? or did you repair it? MH
I just kept fixing it. Over and over again.
Sold the car after that.
Check the link Steve posted above for PRC radiators.
Everyone that's used them said they're great, and their prices look good too.

I had a US Radiator in my 37, and I wasn't at all happy with it.
It sprung leaks around the filler neck, top hose connection and top tank.

Well Steve, you're the engine-er and I can't even spell it, but it seems to me the longer the coolant stays in the radiator the more heat it's going to transfer.
Take the thermostats out of a flathead, it flows more volume. And overheats.
BTW my 41 has a 7 blade Volare steel fan, no shroud, and a stock 350 Olds.
My bud has the same combo in his Olds with with a shroud and the biggest alium rad he could get in it, and it overheats after about 10 min at an idle.
Like I said, I ain't no engine-er, but I know what works!

QuoteStay away however from multi-pass radiator designs. These require much more pressure to move the flow.
I had the stock radiator re-cored in the 41 with a multi pass core.
It'll idle around the fairgrounds all day long in 95 degree heat, and barely hit 190.
It has a 7# cap on it.
