Rodder's Roundtable / bench vise
March 24, 2008, 12:27:38 AM
frank,

i to took the rotating base off my harbor freight vise, and mounted it directly to the pedestal. the pedestal, is 1 1/2 plate steel 36" in diameter, with a 30" piece of 6" x 6"  for a base.  I broke the rotating base  while attempting to loosen a 4" ball valve..... something about a 6' cheater and chinese steel.... but the harbor freight vise has held up great to the other abuses...

Rodder's Roundtable / it really hurts
March 22, 2008, 03:57:44 PM
last tuesday, when i got my cab, i did the normal pre trip check, and threw my stuff in the trunk, and i noticed gasoline fumes in the trunk... so i asked the day guy about it, and he said he took a guy with a gas can to the gas station on his last trip..... ok.

so i leave, and im not feeling all that well, find a nice sunny parking lot, and relcline the seat, and take a nap, thinking i will feel better... get a call 45 minuites later, and i am not feeling any better, and all of a sudden i can taste alcohol, (like the smeel from gas), so i take the car back, and talk to the mechanic (thinking it might be an exhaust leak... he gets in and smeells raw fuel.... i relay about the day guy, he looks in the trunk, and we discover gas is spilt on the trunk liner, and the pad underneath (an area roughly 15" x 20") and the pad is sopping wet (drippy), so he removes the pad and liner, sprays freebreeze in the trunk and car, and says have a good night.

i not thinking about it, leave, and although i dont feel sick, i dont feel well, (freebreeze or perfumes set my sinuses off).

the next day i wake up, hard to breathe, and the headache from hell, but go in anyway (hey i got bills), and can only work half a day, thursday, headache gone, but hurts to breathe, and only work half a day, friday, it still hurts to breathe, but i work a full shift, and today it only hurts when i cough....

i have done something similar before, when painting a car, but with age it hurts more...

i think if this ever happens again, i will go to the e/r

Rodder's Roundtable / ABS question
October 15, 2007, 12:38:19 AM
the sensors are mounted to the backing plate with a 8mm bolt, has a single cable running into it, usaully with a plug 20" away on the frame...

each wheel has a sensor, these sensors send a variable ac signal to the hcu.  this signal is generated by a toothed sensor ring which is mounted on the axle.

to check the individual wheel sensors, unplug the sensor( conector is located on the chassis approx 20" from the wheel)  with an ohm meter check the resistance, front  sensors should be 1000-1400 ohms, rear sensors should be 800 - 1400 ohms. if they are out of range, insure they are clean, and not damaged, if still out, replace them.

the air gaps, between the sensors should be less than .070" on the front, and .005 - .045" on the rear.

the sensor on the inside of the rotor has a magnet on the end, which attract metal particals and brake dust. if you clean the crud off, most abs problems seem to go away.

also check to make sure the sensor is sticking out at 90 degrees to the backing plate, if it is bent, replace it.

the winstar, is it all wheel drive?

Rodder's Roundtable / volare brake caliper failure
June 18, 2007, 02:50:52 AM
put a volare front end under the panel, and bought a set of calipers off ebay for it. put maybe 1500 miles on it, and the drivers side caliper started leaking around the piston. so i replaced the caliper last month, and today, it started leaking again in the same spot.  The replacement caliper came from NAPA, so it has a warranty, but i wanna know what else could cause the failure.
when i installed to clip, i put new rotors (from NAPA) on it, replaced all the bushings, wheel bearings, brakes.  The pads look new, the rotors dont have any groves, and the van stops in a straight line.

ideas :?:

Rodder's Roundtable / Bleeding Master Cylinder
May 23, 2007, 05:54:34 PM
i take some brake line with fittings to match the master cyl, then bend the line to come up and go into the resivor bowl, pump the brakes and the fluid is recycled, the air gets out.....

acutally i had been extremely busy with work, working way too many hours (5 days 12 to 13 hour shifts....) and i just worked on it yesterday,

I found rust particals in the fuel filter on the carb ( it was one of those short filters that ford uses that screws directly into the carb), so i replaced that filter, and the the inline filter back by the tank.

took her for a 12 mile ride ( even on the freeway, and she ran fine..

i dont know where the rust is from, i had the tank out last summer and replaced the pickup tube, the tank seemed clean, no noticable rust..
the fuel lines are 2-3 years old, and it has been garaged, plus we dont salt the roads out here... so i dont know where it came from

Quote from: "mrloboy"Does the tank have a vented cap? A customer of mine had a similar problem as yours. We found that the replacement cap was not vented. The tank would reach a vacuum point that the fuel pump could not overcome. Once the car had sat a few minutes, enough air found its way into the tank to temporarily eliminate the condition. Just a thought! Rick

running a 90's buick filler neck, and i drilled a small hole in the cap.. last summer when i first had this problem... it seemed to fix it ... for then.
