Quote from: "getlost4x4"i just rebuilt this carb.  it appears to be a non-leaker!

i'm have problems with the idle setting, in the fact i have no idea how to set them.  it has the automatic choke using engine heat.  it doesn't really work so i'm converting it over to a manual choke.

When the motor warms up the idle is around 2000 rpm and its buring a lot of gas.  it runs really rich.  i adjusted the two screws at the base of the carb and have them set to about a half a turn out from full in.

i live at 4500 feet above sea level so i need to run it pretty lean? i will also be driving this vehicle about 8000 feet in the summer.

so my main questions are:

how to set the idle?

how to adjust the mixture?

Thanks

Here is some info for you

Rodder's Roundtable / '72 Ford-302 heads on a '78

Quote from: "chimp koose"old blue, YES new aluminum heads are a vast improvement over the old stuff. Do some online research on the type you may be interested in as some cheapo stuff out there is really of poor quality.

I've been thinking it would be hard to go wrong with Edelbrock.

I'm curious as to this as well.  I have a 72 Maverick donor car with a 302 -C4 and 8" that will be harvested for my roadster.

I will eventually build the little 302 as a 331 stroker and may decide to go with aluminum heads.

My question is are aluminum heads a vast improvement over even my 72 - 302 heads ?

Rodder's Roundtable / Seat suggestions and application

The full size Chev trucks have the seatbelts built into the seats and are a very nice seat.

Not sure you can get them in a flip forward style though.

Well, the little Maverick is sitting in the driveway. When the weather warms up it will be harvested for what I need and the rest hauled away.

Got some good parts.

Quote from: "GPster"The earliest Maverics used 4 lug wheels and they may not have had the 8' rear end. GPster

According to a couple of website with Maverick info, this was what they said.

1971
5 lug spindles/axles are introduced on 250 6-cyl and 302 V8 models.
All models get staggered rear shocks.

So I believe with 302 power and 5 lug axles it should be an 8" rear.

Update : Further research has told me the rear is an 8" with 2.79 ratio.

Thanks guys, I have decided to go with the C4  after  all less headaches, and will work fine for a small light roadster.

I found myself a complete donor car with 302 -C4 and 8" rear end. It's a very rusty but less than 100,000 mile 72 Maverick. Was running a short time ago and parked due to a hole in the gas tank.

Gonna drag it home this week and will end up selling the 302 to recoup part of the price. The trans, driveshaft and rear end will see roadster duty.

What can you tell me about Fords AOD trans ?

Obviously it has overdrive, as the C4 does not.

Is it a good trans to use ? Is it much larger physically than the C4 ?

Are there problems that come with trying to use one behind a 351W such as the AOD being computer controlled or such ?

I know so many questions  :)

Rodder's Roundtable / Wanted Plastic mock up Engine
February 06, 2010, 11:58:55 PM
Quote from: "wayne petty"i would think .. a flat plate ...  with the bolt holes the same distance as the spacing on the block... another plate to mount the transmission mount to... and a pair of rods between the front plate and the rear plate... circles welded to the top to show where the back of the block is.. and how big the trans is..

a bracket out the bottom to hold a real oil pan in the proper location.. the whole thing might weight 10 or 15 pounds..  it would take some careful measuring..

and the plastic version is nicer.. but you still have to have a transmission plastic also..

this is just an idea....

I love to save money too Wayne, but the ability to have a physically real looking engine to fit everthing is pretty appealing. And apparently you can bolt a real transmission to them.

I'll be using a C4 and will have one soon.

Quote from: "GPster"I don't think you can get that type of power (or money) out of that   "Baby Hemi" but there are people that just want them for "Looks". Might just put it in a car and then someone from Oz will buy it and ship it home. GPster

I actually have the baby hemi sold to a fellow down in Calgary. He is building a 354 now and wants the 241 for another project.

So the $500 I'm getting for it will buy me a 4" dropped Magnum axle and something else too.

I really think I'm gonna hold out for the Ford Racing crate motor.

Quote from: "GPster"I don't have one but I wonder if you could use a 302 and space the heads from the block to imitate the longer stroke? GPster

I think you might be able to, but If I can find one I'd rather have the Windsor version.

If I can't locate a good used one to save a few bucks I might have to break down and order one.

Just as an update, the 351 turned out to actually be a 460. His buddies had told him it was a 351, and the 351 actually was offered in that year of Ford truck. So was the 460.

So I'm back in the hunt for a 351. I may end up using a mock up motor for the construction phase and save my pennies for one of those neat 385 HP 351 Windsor crate motors from Ford racing. Aluminum heads, roller cam etc etc ...drool

Just wondering if one of you fine gentlemen have a plastic mockup 351 Windsor engine with heads that you want to send to a new home.

Sure would help in setting up the chassis of my T.   :)

Quote from: "enjenjo"some Ford have the CI cast into the block behind the left head. For most of them you will need the casting number, which is on the side of the block, just above the starter.

To change the trans, you need a  Small block C4, and the right kickdown linkage or cable.

Is the flex plate and torque converter different for the C4 ?

What will a 351 W casting number read ?

you need the complete C4 set up,  converter and bell housing to match the flexplate on the engine.

C6  ans C4 parts do not swap around

So does that mean I need a different flex plate too ? The C4 will or will not work with the flex plate that came on the 351/C6 ?
