Rodder's Roundtable / The price of paint
January 13, 2010, 05:57:11 PM
A PPG rep once told me that a typical hot rod spends most of its' time in a garage, out of the elements. He advised me that for that application, top of the line paint isn't nessesary. I went with a decent quality acrylic enamal with hardener and it's held up very well for about eight years now.

Rodder's Roundtable / cam belt change

I was a VW mechanic for 25 years and although I think the cars are nice when new, I wouldn't own one for any longer than the warantee would cover it. It seems that VW's develop a lot of expensive problems with age...just like me.

Tony, it's apiece a cake. Unless its a diesel, you don't even have to lock the cam etc. in place. I just put a paint dot to make up lining the sprockets easier to see.

Pick up a pair of flush cut diagonal cutting pliers. I think even Harbor Freight sells them. You will love them. I bought a pair (Crescent brand), And I use them a lot.

Rodder's Roundtable / Jay Carine AKA C9 Passed Away
November 23, 2009, 05:07:18 PM
I never got to meet Jay, but I feel that I knew him well. I always read anything that he had to say because I knew that it was well worth the time. I feel a deep personal loss at his passing and I pray that God will comfort his family. God bless you my friend and thanks for being a part of my life.

Rodder's Roundtable / Metric system
November 21, 2009, 08:50:41 AM
I spent my first 25 years as a VW mechanic so I'm pretty used to it. For the last 16 years, it's been mostly fractional working on Internationals, but that is changing, too. I do still find myself thinking "let's see, I need a 11mm open end for that bolt", when it really has a 7/16" head on it.

Rodder's Roundtable / Street Rod Carpet Recommendation?
September 02, 2009, 05:12:48 PM
I had my trim shop put in some carpet called "Daytona". It is a very tight, short weave carpet and it looks GREAT! I get more complements on it than you would believe. See if your trim man has samples. Another added bonus is that you won't see it in other cars.

Very nice work! You might consider insulating your piece with something to help cut down on condensation. A number of years ago, I made an A/C duct out of metal. Worked great except on very humid days, it would often get condensation drip off it.

Jay, thanks for the post. Between the photos and the story, I felt like I was there. I always enjoy your coverage of stuff like that. It makes you feel like, even when your car is down, you can still enjoy the lifestyle. Thanks again, Fred
