My Dad bought a new '55 Nomad the day I was Born and it had one (it took me a long time to figure out what it was)-worked good, kinda looked like a clear "fan" with lines

Enjenjo,

Thanks for the help-I guess I'll need to "chew" on this a few days, and really sit down and see how much difference there is in the $$$$$$$$.

Thanks everybody for your input! Next is trying to decide who makes the best Steering Column, the best Wiring brand, whose Gauges to use, etc., etc.

You guys aren't making this any easier! Enjenjo, have you had experience with the Wescott Product? If you have, can you compare the two? 40, maybe I need to start a '37 Project! (boy, I can hear the Wife now-). I have looked for steel Fenders (and about won a nice front set on Ebay for three times the price of the Wescott's). I have some rears that need work, but really don't want to patch and repair-I want something nice and stable. I realize the debate about Steel vs. Fiberglass (in regard to "is it a real car or not"), and don't really care at this point, just want to make an educated decision.

I've been doing Metal work on the car for a long time (I'm getting tired of spending more time with my Welders than my Wife), so that's part of the reason for going Fiberglass (not a great reason, but it'll do :D ), along with the problems of finding good Sheetmetal (I don't want to start with a bunch of damaged stuff).

To me, this is a big decision that can have some far reaching consequences, so I want to do it right. I may have to belly up to the bar and buy the Wescott's, but for over $1000.00 difference (or more) I want to see if there is really that much more quality in the Wescott's.

I lurk here a lot and don't Post much, but I saw a Thread where you were asking for more Posts, so here goes.

I am going to be ready for the Fenders, Running Boards, Trunk for my Project ('35 5 Window Coupe-duh!) in a few Months (gotta finish the Top Chop and Fill)and have looked at the choices that are available out there-J.B. Donaldson (which uses '37 lights), Fairlane, Wescott's and maybe more.

The question is that there seems to be a perception that Wescott's is the best-I was going to buy them, however they are sometimes twice the Price of the other Manufacturers-does anyone here have any experience with Fairlane, Wescott's or both?

Rodder's Roundtable / top chopping
January 29, 2007, 05:11:55 PM
I'm right in the middle of doing the Chop on my'35 5 Window-before I picked up Saw, I read every Article I could find on chopping my Car, and planned-A LOT.

Jusjunk is 110% right-it is a relatively easy Chop to do.

I would highly recommend you buy Tex Smith's "How to Chop Tops"-I believe your Body Style is in there.

One word of caution-there is more than one way to skin a Cat, so plan accordingly-I saw at least 3 or more ways to cut my Car, so I picked the one that looked like the easiest for me (and my Skills), as I wanted the least amount of Metal Distoration as possible.

Rodder's Roundtable / Whats up with Ford MoCo?
January 29, 2007, 05:05:09 PM
Isn't Ford's Retirement Plan part of the blame for this? I mean, their Sales were up,they were o.k., then,   Sales dropped, they had a attrition plan, and they are kinda left holding the bag?

I'm not blaming the Retiree's, just Economics. I just don't think Fords Income is enough to offset the outgo.

As far as Dealers getting MSRP for Cars, I haven't seen it. I work for a Company that has two GM Dealerships and a Jeep Dealership-average Margin, 2-3%-

There's not a lot of Manufacturing jobs here, but there are a lot of Jobs (western Colorado around Aspen)-we are always looking for people and the Classified section of the local small town Paper) is now 10 pages

There is a So-Cal Speed Shop there-I always stop in when I am in town. There's a real nice guy there by the name of Angelo. Last time I was there they had Gray Baskerville's '32 on Display-

The Argon idea sounds like a good one. There is a product called Bloxigen that is used in the Woodworking Industry-it is a gas that is designed to settle on the surface of the Paint and not allow Oxygen to come into contact with the Paint-

Rodder's Roundtable / Went shopping for a new truck
July 14, 2006, 10:04:07 AM
I work for a Company that owns two GM Dealerships, and, of course, we run all GMC's. I wanted to see how far my last Company Truck would go (to make a point to my Employees-1999 extended Cab, Auto, 4wd, 1500 w/5.3). Well, I ran it to 300,000 and it still runs like a top and gets 21 mpg on the highway, still is tight-I pulled it out of the Fleet last year, and I heard the kid who bought it says is still running great and it is rattle free.

I manage 5 Salesmen (I run a John Deere Ag and Construction Dealership), and we have a bunch of 6.0's and Duramaxes-have a few Duramaxes that have had Injector problems lately (not sure why), as it is happening with Trucks with 100,000 miles as well as 3,000 miles (2002-2006 models). We think it may be related to new fuel blends. Sure love those new Allisons for towing, though.

Anyway, I have had 3-5.3's-two Company pickups and I bought a Yukon. The funny thing is, I have noticed that at about 100,000 miles the engines are picking up about 20-30 additional Horsepwer and I get about 1 mpg better-those enignes are great.

I was a devout Ford pickup lover, but I have to say, I will be buying GM until they screw it up-

Rodder's Roundtable / REbabbit bearings?

They use Babbit Bearings in old Tractor engines-I used to know a guy who could pour his own. I would try Old Tractor Forums and see if someone can help-

Rodder's Roundtable / Worst blown engine
April 20, 2006, 09:52:22 AM
Back when I was an idiot kid (back when?) I borrowed a friends '69 GTO Convertible (400 cid) for a Date. He didn't tell me, but the Tach read exactly 1/2 of true RPM-being an idiot kid, I couldn't understnad why it wouldn't reach 4,000 RPM   -brought it back, with a BAD rod knock.

I worked for Chevrolet for a while, and a fellow Rep had a beautiful '66 Caprice two door (Marina Blue, white stripe, Factory 396, 4 Speed). Bought it for my wife, within two weeks she had broken the Crank in two-

My Brother-in-Law and myself built a front engine Dragster with a blown 327, spit a Connecting Rod at the night Drags-oiled the right Slick rolled the Car (I wasn't driving :D )
