Okiedokie,

Did you find out what was the problem with your TPI?

Rodder's Roundtable / Tuned Port problems.
November 13, 2011, 08:37:53 PM
I have an 87 5L TPI in my Forty. Had trouble starting when I first put it together. When I first got it running I had an in-line pump in it that I had to key many times before it built enough pressure to start and run. I installed a pump in the tank and that cured the hard start problem. I bought a plug from Street and Performance to eliminate the 9th injector and they burnt a chip foe me so it would add extra fuel through all injectors on start up.  It starts right away know, unless it sets for an extended time, then I have to key it a few times to bring the pressure up then it fires right up. Check the specs for the fuel pressure, my 87 is 60psi. Check out Street and Performance, http://www.hotrodlane.cc. They have the answer for about any fuel injection problem there is. They have CD's on installing TPI and on-line videos. You can also call them and describe your problem and they will probably tell you cure the first time. They have been installing fuel injected engines in street rods and muscle cars since they first came out.
I have over 9K on the set up and no problems yet.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

Rodder's Roundtable / Comments from the peanut gallery.
October 06, 2011, 09:40:11 AM
Went to a small town car show this summer that's was close to home. We parked the car and in an open spot close to a corner and since the sun was blaring down on the side of the street we parked on, we set up our chairs on the opposite side in the shade. We where sittin behind a nice coupe, about a 36 if I remember correctly. Lots of people looking at all of the cars when this guy walks up to us and said, "Nice car, I'm glad you didn't BASTERDIZE it with a Chevy motor." To that I replied, "O this isn't my car, it is nice though," the coupe, "my car is parked across the street, the 40 Ford with the Chevy engine in it." The guy just raised one eyebrow and walked on.  I laughed it off at first but the more I thought about it the madder I got. I realize everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I put in a hell of a lot of time and a bundle of money in this project. It's like my parents used to tell me when I was a kid, if you don't have something nice to say keep your opinions to yourself.  I've thought of a few humorous whips for the next time this happens. Still ticks me off when I think about it. Glad I got that off my chest, I feel a little better know, until the next time.

Rodder's Roundtable / Ford brake adjustment
October 05, 2011, 03:20:02 PM
Turn the adjuster out while turning the wheel until it gets hard to turn but you can still turn it. Back the adjuster back in until the shoes barley rub and count how many turn you turn it in. Do the same to the other side. Its been awhile but that's who we used to do it at the shop I worked at.
Hope that helps.

Rodder's Roundtable / VDO temp gauge
January 26, 2011, 02:13:40 PM
Where is the temp sending unit installed? Should be in the head for SBC.
Also did you use any Teflon tape or sealer on temp sender? If you did take it out and clean it off and reinstall with out any tape or sealer. It won't ground write with sealer or tape.

Ditto on keeping RRT going by someone else if necessary.
We all appreciate all the work that goes into keeping this sight up and running. I couldn't do it.
I check in several times a week to read new posts and search for answers on problems I might have with my 40 project.
I was a member when I lost my wife a few years ago and this sight definitely helped me through the pain.
This is kind of like an old friend on life support and you know they will be gone soon and you won't be able to ask them any more questions.

Thanks RRT.

Rodder's Roundtable / RamJet 350 Chevy Crate Engine
July 06, 2010, 07:27:34 PM
I'll be at Columbus Good-Guys next weekend if you have any questions. I usually park just inside the front gate to the left back a few rows. Might be a little late Friday though, I have to give my dentists a boat payment about 8am.

Rodder's Roundtable / RamJet 350 Chevy Crate Engine

I'm running an 87 Tune Port in my 40 Tudor. Early version of the Ramjet, and it runs great. I started with an external pump but it started hard and the pump made a lot of noise. Had a friend build a fuel pump hanger for me and cut a hole in my stock tank. There was an article in one of the hot rod magazines on how to make it. I've got over 6K on the setup with no problems.
Here's a link that show how to install the pump hanger in a stock tank.
Tanks Inc sells a hanger. The tray holds gas so you don't starve the pump on corners.
Tell your friend to use an internal pump.
A little hassle in the beginning but well worth the trouble.

Rodder's Roundtable / TPI question
May 24, 2010, 02:50:16 PM
Street and Performance.cc sells a plug for the ninth injector hole.
I changed my 87 5L TPI from MAF to MAP sensor so I put the plug in.
Put the plug a the freezer and heat the intake then pop it in.
S&P burned a chip for the 92 GM computor so it takes care of the cold start.

Rodder's Roundtable / Aluminum Radiators
November 16, 2009, 11:51:57 AM
I have a PRC in my 40 with 5L TPI. The only compaint is it runs too cold. 195 Thermostat it runs about 180 deg.
Electric fan should last years. I test the fan a couple of time a season just to make sure it still works.
Good radiators.

Rodder's Roundtable / L60E problems
June 22, 2009, 09:59:08 PM
Anyone know a descent transmission shop in Lexington, Ky.
I'm down here working a contract job and my 97 Yukon trans started to slip. I think its got a 4L60E in it.
I've been looking to replace it anyway.
Anyone have an opinion on Chevy HHR or Nirto RT?
To bad they don't make a HHR with a TPI or a ZZ4.

Thanks

Bees wax works best on aluminum. Just touch the bit with a little bees wax and drill away. I use a drill file that has large flutes made for aluminum. They sell them at most swap meets for about $8.

Rodder's Roundtable / 11" Mustang II brakes
March 11, 2008, 10:14:13 PM
I just bought an 11 rotor kit from a friend. Haven't had a chance to put them on yet. Vented steal rotors and Welwood calipers. Hope they don't stick out any further though. Tires rub a little on a hard turn up an incline like a driveway. The MII brakes stop Ok but the left caliper hanges a little. Rebuilt junk NAPA parts.

Rodder's Roundtable / New project
March 11, 2008, 09:58:23 PM
I had a non-world class T5 in my 40 until I blow a tooth off the cluster gear last fall. The engine and trans came out of an 87 Iroc. I replaced it with a word class T5, much better and stronger trany. If you use a T5 be sure its a Word Class You can tell the Word Class from the cluster gear seal on the front of the trany below the input shaft. Its a bearing race with a cover over the center. You can see the Tompkin race number on it. The non-world class just has a plug over the shaft, looks like a freeze plug.
I looked up the specs when I was replacing the trans. Hears a link to some of the info I used... http://www.inliners.org/Jack/t5_page.html
Don't use a T5 from anything other than a V8. The v6 T5 won't hold up.

I think you 350 rear cross member would have to be moved or modified for the rear mount the T5 as far as the placement set back from the engine. Try Googling the dimensions on each trany and compare them. Should be a easy fix though.

I also used the hydraulic clutch set up from the Iroc with a set hanging pedals out of a Ford pickup.
I think if I was doing it over I'd put in a 700R4 trany.

Hope this helps.
