Rodder's Roundtable / 40 Plymouth truck
July 17, 2007, 09:15:14 PM
Very nice project and nice work!
I did a mock-up once and didn't bolt on the fuel pump etc to the block,,,,, went ahead and welded it all up and when I did the final assembly with the finished engine........ no clearance for the fuel pump!!!  and wanted to put a low mount alternator on but nooooo. I think a guy has to build many cars to get half as good as the guys in here are.

Very nice work,,,,, will be watching for the tin photos

Could your e-fan possibly be "stalling" at highway speeds because of air flow greater than what it can handle?
Had the same problem with my '57 Willys PU with SB in it. Put a good shroud on the rad and that cured it, also put in a 160 Therm.

I have a stupid question.......  Is it me or does the spline on the input shaft of the steering box look striped or am I seeing things? The flex coupling is bolted to this spline.

I am old AND blind so maybe one of you automotive hawk eyes could check it out.

If I am wrong I will kick my dog as punishment.

This is what I enjoy about RRT. The help offered to members is outstanding.
While you are under the hood checking out that steering box, you might want to bend that preasure line from the power steering pump so it doesn't rub on the steering box. Looks like it might be doing that when you take the boat out for a cruise. (you can see the marks on the box and hose) As far as that "floating feeling" are your tires inflated properly? How is the alignment? Tie rods? etc. Like the guys said, there should be 0% flex in the box.
Thought I'd drop my two bits

         Good luck.

Rodder's Roundtable / Cleaning mag wheels
June 29, 2007, 02:53:41 AM
Thanks for all the feed back. I got some of the trucker aluminum cleaner and they came up quite nice. I also got some other highly corrosive comercial cleaner and it even got them cleaner. (can't remember the name, I used it all and then threw the bottle out) I spent about $50 on cleaners and they did come up nicely,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, then I painted them. I printed up everyones solutions and passed them out to my buds

Does anyone know of a good way to really get old mags clean? I scored a set of used wheels that just won't come back to that clean aluminum look.

Rodder's Roundtable / Fuel Pump - I think I got it
June 24, 2007, 03:51:02 PM
msuguydon,   ignore all that good sound advise,,,,, do what I did,,,,,,, just undo the fuel pump and fight with it for hours leaning over the fender with the blood running to your brain and nearly pass ing out before you finally get the pump back on. When you finally finish and get to stand back up you get light headed and have to sit down... now for the important part,,,, have a nice cool beer and feel good knowing that you have succesfully changed you fuel pump but NEVER tell anyone exactly how you did it.

Rodder's Roundtable / Light truck tires
June 24, 2007, 03:35:18 PM
Funny, I bought a set of michelins from costco and to say the wear was most disapointing is an understatement, the ride was great but they're nearly done with only about 10,000mi on them. Had a freind tell me that if you get a new set of tires the thing to do is to run them and get them good and hot then let them cool down. He says it chemically "sets" the rubber and you can help determine the wear characteristics of the tire.
Any of you ever heard of this before? I guess it's an old stock car racers trick.

Wish they would wash it off,,,,,,,,,,, This is so incredibly good for the hobby. This got world wide coverage. They should bury another one. Put a Ford, Chev, Dodge side by side. Talk about a furror over that when they open the box to see which one survived the best....... Let the manufactures participate.
A $2000 car got Tulsa world wide recognition. Cool

By the way I like those old tubs too.

Don't lnow what all the hubbub is about ,,,,,,, those old dodges did that right in the car port.....................sorry dodge fans,,,,,,,, like the motors though.

Rodder's Roundtable / Building without papers
May 29, 2007, 06:34:01 AM
Quote from: "58 Yeoman"It seems that I either saw that on tv or read it in the papers.  Wasn't it a Mustang?  Or, am I thinking of something else?

This was a 52 chev tudor. The whole scene was bad. The kid was very upset for months. Some friends in his car club found him another ride real cheap but it wasn't the same.

Rodder's Roundtable / Building without papers
May 27, 2007, 10:43:57 PM
Just a story I heard about some months ago (and it's true),,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, A young fellow bought this abandoned car from a farmer without any papers. He spent about $20,000 on it and was nearly finished. He decided to trace the former owners to find out if he could get the papers for it. It turned out that the owner had died but his son was living several hours away. He phoned the son and the guy seemed  very inclined to get the car signed over to the kid as his dad had abandoned the car years before. The kid offered to come over and get the transfers done but the guy said to wait as he was passing by his area the next week.
The following weekend this truck with a trailer and the police showed up at his house and he was told that he must give up possesion of the car as the guys son was the legal owner of it by the police. As the poor kid watched the guy drive his car onto the trailer the cop said, "we have never met such a bastard, sorry about this". They all got in their cars and drove off with his 2yr old project dream car on this guys trailer.

If this doesn't give us all a cold shiver up our spines i don't know what will. I believe I would've gone to his house and burned it to the ground.

Rodder's Roundtable / Ramshorn Manifolds
May 14, 2007, 04:12:27 AM
Funny how things go. For years we were told scap those manifilds then someone looked alittle closer and realised that the small valve heads with the rams horn manifolds would give you better bottom end power and performance. Next they'll be telling us to bolt the old quadraflush carbs back on.

Rodder's Roundtable / SB thin and thick oil seals
May 14, 2007, 04:05:54 AM
The seal I'm referring to is about 1/2" to 5/8" thick. It sort of "wraps around the lip of the pan. The motor is a 327 with aftermarket timing cover and pan. I've got the normal "thick" seal in but there is still about an 1/16-1/8 inch gap between the pan and the cover.
Next move is to chuck the works in the dump and order a matched set from some one,,,,,,,, any suggestions?
