Let me know if you get it and maybe we can help each other.  There is a 38 Ford truck cab in Billings that I would lie to make an offer on. Shipping is $$$$$$$$$
Were you thinking of driving up to get it or transport ?

Rodder's Roundtable / Quadrajet woes
October 04, 2004, 02:06:11 AM
Went to the garage to try out the smog carb and though..............try the old one again just for grins.  Woweee   for some reason it idled down and saw no gas coming thru the venturis.  The idle mixture scews would change the sound and the idle speed.  It works..............but why??????????????  I think the rrt  was right.   The pcv valve popped out when I was poking around and the grommet around it in the valve cover was like wood and split.    Could that be the vacuum leak.
Ran out of gas so couldn't test it out very long.

Good idea from Ralph on drilling the throttle plates.  Will do that if the problem comes back.

Rodder's Roundtable / Quadrajet woes

Yes I have the stainless steel heat shield and a few gaskets under the carb.  The extra gaskets were to get away from the heat  as Enjenjo  says, there is an exhaust passage there.
If I close the throttle plates to less than 1/8 inch then the engine stalls.
The vacuum leak is a good possibility.  Will look for that.  Recall that I should spray ether around and if the engine speeds up then that is the leak ???????????
Or spray something else??
Then try the other carb if I can block off all the vacuum ports.

Have also seen that egay has a lot of used  Qjets and cheap.  Will shop for an old one.
thanks

Rodder's Roundtable / Quadrajet woes
October 03, 2004, 01:04:18 AM
Need another set of wheels on the road and the 34 lost out to the 66 Chevelle. Closer to drivable.
Starts right up but won't idle below about 1500 - no tach, estimate only.
Before I get into the carb,  it's a 396 engine,  freshly rebuilt,  .030 overbore, stock heads, four tube headers, muncie 4 speed.  There is a very lumpy cam that is at least 20 years old.  Don't know the specs,  but as it's old timey, it's probably long duration with lots of overlap.
Anyway, I looked long and hard for an old quadrajet that was pre emmision style and finally found a 70 vintage (by the purist's  number decoding).  Rebuilt by one of those cheapo sweatshop carb rebuilders.  Ran,  but only with the throttle stop turned waaaaay in.  Primary butterflies open about 1/8 inch.  Played with the idle mixture screws but they had no effect,  even screwed all the way in,  no change.
Now I'm no carb expert,  but found a manual on old qjets and read up on the idle circuit.  Seems that gas is sucked up from behind the main jets to the top of the body then sideways to a down tube which goes into the idle mixture screw opening.  Book said that there may be extra air introduced  but  I didn't see where.   Well I traced this circuit thru with a fine wire and then blew it with compressed air and all seems clear.  Checked the gaskets and they seem to be compressing normally so the case is not warped.  The rebuild shop had epoxied over the soft plugs and it was a bit messy,   but I have no flooding problem.
Kind of stumped so am asking the rrt  if it's possible that the lumpy cam will not creat enough vacuum to suck fuel thru the idle circuit.   I had a similar cam back "in the day" (latest buzz words)  and yet still could idle under 1000.   Any words of wisdom or experience out there ???????????
Hate to pull the cam at this point, especially if it's something else.   Do have a later model  quadrajet with lots of emmission extras...........could throw it on,  but it's been in the corner more than a few years ???
Suggestions?

Rodder's Roundtable / Re: Finish Washer

Try Bofers in a search.  They are one of the biggest washer makers in the country.  They may make you buy 1000 pcs or send you to a distributor, but at least you could get a p/n and search that.
If you get nowhere then post back and, as I have a catalog at work,  I can look.]

Rodder's Roundtable / windshield leak
August 26, 2004, 11:50:03 PM
Quote from: "sirstude"Zebby,
I had the same problem with my Impala,  The parts house has a windshield sealer that works great.  It is a clear urethane that is not as thick as normal urethane and made by Permatex.  Tape up the inside of the windshield and just squeeze the sealer around the window and let it sit.  I will self level and fill any holes you have.  If you don't put the tape on the inside you will find it on the dash and seat when it drips through.  I don't remember the exact name, it has been a couple of years since I did it, but just look in the Permatex section of any good parts house.

Hope this helps
Doug

ps.  Did you ever do anything with your 33/34 radiator?

Thanks . will look for it and try it out but ???????? I'm pessimistic about short cuts.
Still have the rad and will see if it can cool in the AZ heat when I get it on the road.   Thanksgiving is the latest goal. Will still probably end up with an aluminum one,  It was hot again today  100 + degrees.  Remind we then.

Rodder's Roundtable / windshield leak
August 26, 2004, 12:26:20 PM
Working on two rods at the same time,  trying to get one on the road for that psyco  high,  but little things really * me off.
On the 66 Chevelle went to great pains to kill the rust in the windshield frame area and paint it prior to glass install.   About 6 months ago finally had a friend of a rodder friend install the glass.  Well now I went to put in the stainless trim around the glass,  washed the area and when blowing it dry I saw that along the bottom of the glass the water ran thru onto the dash.  No seal.    Tried to call the glass guy but nobody can find him now.   Sure as little green apples,  the area will get scratched if I cut it out and then the rust will come back.
Anyone had any success with a liquid sealer of some sort?   Seems to only leak along about a two foot section right at the center bottom of the glass.   What about the butyl liquid primer??

Quote from: "C9"Looks like copper tubing is a good choice.
What I worry about with that is the flame required for the soldered joints when the tubing is near wood rafters etc.

Or . . . does a really big soldering iron do the job?

It's conceivable that I could solder the long run on the garage floor, carry it out backwards through the side door and slide it into the rafters.
The tubing couldn't be full length cuz it would need the room to 'flex' into the rafters.
I don't want to suspend the tubing from the rafters, but running it under them along the horizontal 2 x 4 (plate?) on top of the vertical studs would probably work better than stringing it up into the rafters.

Fwiw - the garage is not drywalled yet and that's going to be an advantage for me.

Plumbers solder around wooden rafters and studs with a propane torch.  Good plumbers use a heat shield  to not blacked the wood.  Try a plumbers supply or just use a piece of sheetmetal.  Make sure you use lots of flux and let the solder suck into the joint. (capillary action)

Very impressive.  You've mixed a  creative, almost artsy effect with good old hot rod ingenuity.
How about one of those late model hi po Chevy sixes for go power?
About 260 hp stock???
Let's see more.

Yea I understand what you're saying,  but gas in Canada is about $3.50 per gallon and when you're saving nickels for either parts or gas or to keep it in shape .......... plus I remember how I was with my first V8.

It's it date,  I'll try not to drool too much.  I'll have a cell phone 480-225-4991  so we can meet up at the show.

Yes I hope to see that  track roadster.  The quad 4  is arguably the best domestic 4 banger for this.  He is influenced by the Honda and Toyota motors that his friends and brother screams on.  Maybe a "young guns" rivalry???   Is the quad 4 cheap  in the junkyards yet ?  Hope your friend posts here.
thanks

Have a 15 year old cousin who wants a hod rod project,  not a rice rocket like his older brother.  The kid is kinda quiet and shy, but saves every nickel he makes, is a bus boy at a restaurant and mows lawns.  He  is also  into dirt bikes,  buys junkers and fixes em up and trades up.  Now has a 4 or 500 cc single cylinder Honda I think.
He'd like an old pickup,  but figures that there's no way he can keep gas in a V8.   So he's asking if a hot rod can have a 4 banger.   He lives in southern Ontario (Canuk)  so I though the LA roadster show would knock his socks off plus he could check out the 4 banger rods there and get some ideas.  I've arranged a ride in a silver bird into Phoenix  and then I'll drive him to Pomona sat morn, (non hot rod ride)  but if any of the RRT'ers here are driving about the same time,  it would be waaaay cool to give him a ride part way????????????  Kinda pass on to another generation.  Or even a ride around the Fairplex????   I can just see him showing the pics to his friends back home. My hot rod is still pieces around the garage.
Any offers or suggestions ?

Rodder's Roundtable / from Canada eh
May 29, 2004, 01:10:36 PM
Just last November I trailered a 64 Beaumont from Saskatchewan to Arizona.  Crossed the border late at night, about midnight and there was absolutely no lineup.  Had to show a bill of sale and a title (called ownership in Canada),  paid about $15 fee and was away in no more than 30 minutes.  Agents were good to deal with and they even joked about going so far for such a hulk.  It had no motor and yes if the car was much newer, then they would have got into the immissions and safety equip issues.  They gave me a customs clearance approved form which I took to the DMV in Arizona along with the Saskatchewan ownership and got an AZ title  for $4.
I wish big brother was always that easy to deal with.

ps: anybody got a full dash for a 64 Beaumont (same as Tempest GTO) ?

Rodder's Roundtable / Re: newbie on the block

Welcome from another Canuck who left the great white north for the Az sunshine.  Seeing your location does bring familiarity pangs.  Have spent a few weeks at wifey's relatives who are grain farmers in the Arbourg area.  They also have old tin just pushed back into the farm bush.  Got lots of sheet metal there and plan to return for a rust free 48 Ford sedan one day.  Just recently made a fast run to Sask and back with a  64 Beaumont shell.  Just had to have one to be different from the Chevelle guys.  The border crossing was so remote  that the guard kept me there 2 hrs  just to BS.   There were no others crossing the whole time.  The Sask farmers have a saying "you can see your dog run away for three days".  Remote  does not describe it.
Welcome here ,  some good reads as you know.
