Considering a 64 Ford pickup for a daily, small block and auto trans,  but concerned with switching over to power steering.  Don't want to do the ram thing, as was stock back then,  but will a conventional power box from a newer one bolt up?  Lot's of mid 70's trucks in the junkyards to pick from,  will look for disc brakes too.
I'll pass on this if the steering is a major project.

I've got two projects in the works and absolutely no idea what color to do them.   Last two projects were banana yellow and irmine white and was happy with both of them but ...............
Saw a new PT Cruiser today that was a custard / caramel yellow.  Made me want to get a spoon and dig in.  First one I've seen,  anyone else seen that yet?
I've never been good at picking colors,  we have a BIG 38 Ford truck that pulled a BIG trailer with all the kids when they were young.  Travelled all over every summer.  When first built in the early 80's I painted it deep maroon and my wife hated the color.  Shortly thereafter I had it apart to change motors and the front clip and running boards where set off out of the way up on saw horses.  It took me a few weeks and one day while I was at work my wife saw her opportunity................went to the paint shop and very flamboyantly said " match my nails"  and held out her freshly painted fingernails.  They mixed her a gallon,  she loaded the spray gun per their instructions and when I got home from work she was in the back yard.........in her bikini (wow figure then) .............just laying on the final coat.  I've got pics as proof............  I'm sure Crosley has seen this beast around town with the maroon cab  and ................HOT PINK  front clip.
That was years ago and the hot pink has faded to a pepto bismol color,  but ...............it's different.
How do you guys pick a color ?

No solution yet.  I'm saving my $ and hope to be able to tear it open in about 2 weeks.  I'll get the muncie redone while it is apart if I can find a local shop that has parts and know what they're doing.  While it is out I'll measure where the pilot is and how much the input shaft sticks out.  I'm hoping to reuse the clutch and PP as it has only been in there about 6 months.  $$$ you know.

Good point.  I put in  a new ball and adjusted it.  The cross shft is factory and good.  The link up to the pedal is homemade with ball ends.  I'll check all that.
If Crosley is on here maybe he can recommend a manual trans shop that is familiar with these and can get parts.  Someone in the Phx area ??
Shipping elsewhere would be $$

The first clutch was a hipo  Hays,  now it is stock,  both were diaphram type.
Pilot bearing has always been a press fit and I checked that it had no play on the input shaft before I installed it.

WOW ,  lots of good input.
I've changed the pilot bearing 2 or 3 times.  Was thinking that it seemed to sit far in the crank which made me think that the shaft was not riding in it????  It was a buddy who redid the trans for me years ago.  It sat under the bench a good 10 yrs.  Is there a thrust bearing that could have been left out??
I'm saving $  to redo the muncie and at the same time solve the clutch chatter.  It is not oil,  fresh engine, uses no oil and still clean.  When I get it apart I'll measure shaft length vs dimension to pilot.
thanks guys

Flywheel was new billet when I put it all together about 2000 miles ago. New mounts both motor and trans then too.  Replaced  the pressure plate with the clutch about 500 miles ago.
I agree on the 4th gear syncro it must be bad.
The clutch chatter is what's bugging me.  Got to be the input shaft not running in the pilot bearing.    Could the input shaft not be sticking  out enough ??
Some days the chatter is worse than other days and sometimes it is smooth,  so I think things are moving around.

I row the gears in my daily and it's no fun cause of bad clutch chatter on take off no matter haw gently I try it.  Been living with this for over a year and was stumped on the cause.  First assumption was the pilot bearing of course,  but it showed no wear.  Put in a new one anyway and still had the chatter.   Thought it might have been the Lakewood bell off center so swapped it for a factory bell and new clutch at the same time.  Was better for a few hundred miles,  but now back to chatter.  Is really shaky  in reverse.
Could it be that the trans input shaft does not stick out far enough to ride in the pilot bearing ???   I'm not familiar with manual trans,  but is there a thrust bearing or spacer that could be missing and cause the shaft to be too far into the trans  ?   Also the thing shifts great until I try to slip it into 4th.   Then there is always a crunch.  Not a grind,  just a crunch.  Double clutching going into 4th helps,  but not always.
I'm tired of laying on my back lifting this thing in and out so before I do it again ..........educate me.

Welcome Pete.
As the others said,  good tech advice with no drama.   Some good natured ribbing is always a smile when you need it.

Rodder's Roundtable / Optima batteries
October 31, 2006, 08:52:02 PM
I too have a tiny panasonic in my 34 ford,  space limits.  My concern is that the GM  late model alternator can output enough current to smoke it.   The alt has a big output wire, 2 or 4 gauge and yet these little batteries can't accept huge charging currents if dead.  The std optima is OK,  but I worry about the little ones.

Well,  it didn't happen after all.   Joe was to pick me up at 6:30  and drive together up to see the car,  but he called about 6:00   to say that he already had received the $'s  and the truck was coming fri to get it so.............no point in it.
Couldn't argue with him even though I was looking forward to seeing it.  We talked for awhile and I think he is a straight shooter,  different,  but hey   Hot Rodders are different.   I would believe him.  We exchanged cell numbers and will meet up at the Mesa swap meet next weekend.
Did get me thinking,  about 14 yrs ago I lost a 63 Nova to theft,  what's the chances that this was it.
Sam,   let us know what you think when you get it,  pics maybe??

Yes the guy is in Chandler,  but the car is in Peoria,  75 th ave and the 101  which may be close to River1.  If he is on here now call the guy at 602-882-3343 cell and set it up for tonight.    Then call me at  480-225-4991   as I'm set to drive up there with the guy (Sam)  at 7:00 pm.  It is an hour there and another back so if River can do it then go.
Actually I'm kinda keen to see this thing,  just supposed to be sitting the granddaughter tonight....................
Anyone have River's phone number ?

I too am in Chandler.
Give me an address and phone number   or better yet  rtaylor@filconn.com    at work and I can check it thurs evening if Crosley can't make it.

Rodder's Roundtable / Help Needed

Hey,  I'm the guy that checked out Dave's 40 conv't.    I don't recall Dave's reaction on receving it,  but I tried not to pass my judgement on it.  I just stated what areas had bondo,  had been replaced ,  fit of panels,  interior detail.  It did have a lot of underbody covered with thick undercoating.  Any  way the real reason I'm posting is that I met a great guy when checking it out.  The owner was not available and sent his buddy over to meet me and show we around the car.  Really neat guy .....and his wife and his house full of oddities  and his other hot rods........................and here's the clincher.............an old 50's hot rod 32 Vicky.   It was well worth the trip............and the evening I spent with him and his wife  drooling over that Vicky.  It wasn't for sale officially,  but by the end of the evening he offered it to me for way less than market because he knew how I lusted for it just the way it was.   Long story short,  I couldn't raise the $,  but if I did come into some I know where I would spend it if it was still there.
Anyway a jaunt off to check out some old tin is always fun and often leads to more.
