Rodder's Roundtable / Turbo 350 Shifter indicator
July 07, 2006, 08:01:44 AM
Has anybody made a shifter indicator?  I have some 12volt leds that would look great as shift indicator on the dash .  I have looked for some type of rotary switch to go from the steering column ,but have not found one that looks like it would work.
Thanks,

Anybody know how to reduce the pressure in a GM power steering pump to work with a Late (1979 up) Mustang rack ? The pump is an early style with the keyway and bolt.
Thanks, Rick Harris

First I want to say THANK YOU !!! for the advice I got with my many Questions about Mustang  II power steering.
I just finished up my 36 Dodge power steering. I just got it aligned yester day and now it drives great except it feels like the pump still has too much pressure. I have the front alignment set at caster positive 6.1 degree left and 6.7 degree right. Camber .2 degree left and .3 degree right, and the toe -.1 degree.  The guy that aligned it said the different left and right was for the crown on the road.
Now for the power steering pump I have a early style GM pump (with keyway and nut) that I have shorten the pressure spring to lower the pressure. I was told by FATMAN FAB cutting a 1/3 off the spring would lower the pressure to 600 to 700 psi and that is what the rack needed.
Has any body done this ?  Is there a better way ?
I have seen that Heidt's has an adjustable power steering valve. Has anybody used this and is it worth buying ?
I love the Speedway Motors # 617-4820 AN  6 Fittings for power steering.
That made it real easy to run the #6 A/C hoses. I just wish I could find an 3/8" inverted flare to a #6 fitting.
Thanks for your GREAT advice,
Rick Harris

I want to use an old style rebuilt small block Chevy '68 type power steering pump with reservoir. I have the '68 brackets and the crank pulley for the short water pump. Will this pump work well with a '79 up Mustang rack ? Do I have to cut the pressure spring to lower the pressure of the pump to work properly ?
I have all the info about the hoses.
Thanks for all your help !

I have finally decided to go with power steering. I know to use the 79 up Mustang rack with a GM pump. What I would like to know is what alignment spec to use for safe highway speed driving. My 36 Dodge weights 3100 # with 1660 # on the front wheels.

Rodder's Roundtable / Rear leaf springs
December 31, 2005, 07:58:57 AM
Anybody got any suggestions about rear leaf springs for my 36 Dodge Coupe ?  I have looked at all the ads in the mags, all the ones I saw are for Fords and Chevys. I have not seen any for any mopars.
I am still running the stock ones now , but after 70 years they are very  rough riding. I have a pair or 5 leaf Dodge Caravan springs now, and they are about the right lenght.  The thing I like about them is they unbolted from the caravan. They should weld in about the same place as the stock ones. Sense they were from a front wheel drive will they work ok with out some kind of a traction bar ?
Thanks for your comments !

Rodder's Roundtable / Aluminum Pulleys
November 10, 2005, 10:06:52 PM
I was having a vibration at about 70 mph. I could not find the problem. I just had my driveshaft balanced. I was talking to my life long hot rod buddy of 40 years. He ask if I was running the alumimun pulleys on my small block Chevy w/ short water pump. I said yes and that is not the problem. He said to put the stock steel ones back on and see it the problem goes away. I did and it did. He said that most of the aluminum are not billet but cast and are not balanced. There is one other thing the stock steel pulley overdrives the water pump by 20%.  Would that help a vibration ?
The pulleys I was running was the 2 groove 6.6" aluminum. The stock pulleys are the 6 3/16" GM # 3876846 water pump pulley and the crank pulley is 7 11/16" GM # 39110013.
The stock steel don't look as good but they sure work better.
I don't know if any of you have has had this problem.
Thanks , Rick Harris

Rodder's Roundtable / Electric Cooling Fan
November 07, 2005, 12:07:11 AM
I would like to get your expert opinion. I have a 15" 7 blade GM flex fan on my 36 Dodge , 350/350 w/air and a Walker radiator. It is working fine(never has gotten too hot even in 100 degrees running the air) , but was just thinking about replacing it with electric fan or fans. Does it give you more HP by not turning the fan?   Is it more trouble than it is worth. Do most of you use electric fans for clearance ? Or some other reason.
Thanks , Rick Harris.

Rodder's Roundtable / Mustang II power streering
October 18, 2005, 12:35:58 PM
This may be an old topic, but it is new to me. I want to put a power rack on my mustang II front end ( great winter project and I am not getting any younger). I have a manual rack that is working fine except it is very hard to turn while parking. I have the steering shaft with the u-joints at a very small angle.  I have a 1978 Mustang II power rack laying on the garage floor that I would like to use with a Chevy pump. I have a small block Chevy with a short water pump and I plan to use the stock power steering brackets form a 68 Chevy. I understand that is an issue of the pump putting out about 1000# pressure and the rack needing a lot less like 700-800 #. I have been told to take out the pressure relief spring and cut off about 1/3 of it and that will make the pressure right.
Now my question ? Is that correct info ?  What pressure and return hoses should I use ? I would like to know part# and what car they are for.  Also this is going on my 36 Dodge which is a Street  Rod and not a show car.
I want to thank you for your help in advance.
