Rodder's Roundtable / Swapping Ford heads
December 19, 2009, 10:02:44 AM
YES, YES, YES!!!
They will fit!!! Most of the minor mods are shown above

1 You need new head bolts (or studs) with the spacers (1/2 to 7/16 inch)
2 You need the 351 intake gasket with the "L" shaped coolant holes though the Fel Pros cover both 302 and 351 with an insert in the coolant hole which I use
3 You should modify the pressed in rocker studs to 3/8" screw in type - super easy job, Pull the studs, then run a 7/16 taper then bottoming tap s-l-o-w-l-y. BBC studs fit then roller rockers are nice
4 Push rods "should" be the same, but they need checking, JIC
5 You need a set of new head gaskets - they are the same, 302/351.
6. You should make sure there isn't an EGR hump in the exhaust port. If so, a few hours with a die grinder fixes that (just leave the 1/4" hole and forget)

As far as soft valve seats, I personally never had a problem, but possibly a daily driver - or one running a computer controlled FI that tends to be leaner therefore hotter burning. With a carb, probably never have a problem. The valves, much bigger @1.84/1.54 (originals 1.78/1.45), the comb chamber, 60.4cc vs the original 69cc.

This is a mod that really helps a 302/5.0

Of course, if you can find a 5.0 Explorer with GT40P heads, your work is already done, but then there will be other, but minor problems

Rodder's Roundtable / replacement for zip ties
December 16, 2009, 12:54:28 PM
As i sit here dripping red sticky stuff from yet one more personal ding from a cable tie, have probably used over a thousand of those dang things getting my car wired up. I'll strap up a run, figuring that I don't have any more wires, and dam'd if another batch mysteriously appears. While all of the suggestions are great, I suspect that cable ties will continue to rule if for no other reason is that they are cheap, easy to remove when that stray wire appears and are simple to install

That was a pretty good show even if they did spend too much time, IMHO,on the OSU hydrogen powered car and little or none on "hot rods" with the exception of Blowfish. I would have liked to have seen more 'back yard' creations run, but..........that's show biz

All good suggestions - but if it's antifreeze, and you have dogs or cats, they love the sweet taste - but only try it once - as ethylene glycol will kill them!!

You need a catch can!!

Most of the new ignitions call for the spiral wound wires - MSD and Crane for sure and probably Mallory. I guess I'd hang on to them if you have an old tractor, a lawn mower or even an old points car, but other then that - not much use now - they evidently emit to much RF noise and destroy the effectiveness of a computerized ignition that uses millivolts  in its 'brain'

Then you could consider Jet Hot silver coating. I've done my last two that way - no discoloration or chipping. Headers (Sanderson) are Jet Hot coated as well.

$8.47 is a lot of $$$$ for 50% tap water!!!!
I would suggest that you use distilled water.  Using hard and/or chlorinated water can cause deposits and corrosion in your cooling system.   I save water out of my dehumidifier in the summer to use in coolant and batteries.

I generally do and in the spring will flush and refill with distilled water and fresh PEAK. Now - just want freeze protection since the car will not be driven nor barely warmed for the next 4-5 months, depending on the winter

Quote from: "phat rat"I'm with zzford. But I don't buy the 50/50 I always have an empty container on hand and transfer half of a new full one to the other container than add water. Whenever I need to add I do so with 50/50

Just for the heluvit, I stopped in Wally World - the 50-50 is $8.47 and the regular is $9.00 but they are out.

$8.47 is a lot of $$$$ for 50% tap water!!!! That would be 2 quarts of water for $4.24 or $2.12/quart!!!!

Rodder's Roundtable / Antifreeze time - dammit

Here in the frozen tundra of Upstate New York it has 'suddenly' become antifreeze time. Since my car is still under some semblance of almost being finished with a running motor and needing to be trailered(   ) to the upholsterers in the next couple of weeks, needs to have some antifreeze installed. The car has a Walker '32 style but midline B-Z-Ac491-2 radiator and a SB Ford motor. The question is, what is the capacity? I dumped the water, but of course only some of it ended up in the pan so really can't use that method as a yardstick.

I'm sure that most have a SB Chebbie, but there really can't be that much difference in motor capacity. How much antifreeze did you use?? I was going to install 6 quarts of PEAK ........ but ??? Do I need the full 2 gallons - no big deal as I do have it, but there are diminishing returns on mix concentrations.

The techs must have been on a break when I tried yesterday as it is working now.

Just as a note from an OF that used to work on those pre '54 steamers, what is so difficult about disassembling a flathead beyond taking the valves out with a special bar that needs a special video. Reassembly - yes

With the attitude they pulled on me - I can see why. Then there was the 10% minimum shipping charge - if you had a 1# but $500 item, it was $50 and if I recall, plus postage(but may be wrong on that point).

To stay in business it's customer service that counts. I ended up buying much more from Yogi's and of course Summit instead

I talked to Vern Walker at a show about 8 - 10 years ago about a top tank leak - he said send it back and we'll make it good again. I did and they did - though it wasn't a new one, it was repaired and never leaked again - and it was at least 5 years out of any warranty
