Rodder's Roundtable / 6V/12V question
December 07, 2004, 05:59:00 PM
My favorite old guy mechanic, he's 80, checked the generator that I bought from him with the wire brush on a bench grinder and a screw driver. He spun the pulley with the grinder, and used the screw driver to arc from the out put terminal to the case. He is really a safety oriented guy. If you can find an old service manual from a sixties chevy, they have a diagram on how to hook up the wire to turn the gen into an electric  motor, if it spins it is fine. This is the same principal that a cub cadet starter/gen combo uses.  Jay

Quote from: "Dirk35"Can someone tell me what wires go where on this?

I have the Haywire kit, and its column switch it shows is nothign like mine.

Here is a pic.

You are missing the plug that goes from the column to the three wire plug in the harness. Call Ken and Im sure he will rectify the situation. Jay

Quote from: "Crosley"Is this a 700r4 tranny?

It should not stall the engine when stopping. There is no oil pressure supplied for lockup in first gear.

IF you remove the voltage feed to the tranny is the problem still there?
Yes it is a 700. I havent tried that yet ,  that is next on my plans. I figured you could point in the right direction, I alway like to listen to some one with more exp, you might just pick up a juicy tidbit thanks  8) Jay

I gotta a quick tranny question for you. My 72 suburban is set up to lock up in 3rd and 4th.  I drive around town in third. Here lately when I stop it fells like the conv isnt unlocking and will stall the engine. I t has the vacumn switch and is hooked to the brakes switch. It performed flawlessly for 20000 miles. Would you think that it would be a solenoid problem or would be in the control side. I doesnt do this in OD. I cant think of a component in the control that would only be used in 3rd, and it has been to long since tranny rebuild in school to remember about the internals Thanks 48 suburban :?:
