I just returned from a business trip where I had an '09 Mercury Grand Marquis as a rental. The car had vented rear disks that looked at home behind 17" wheels, although they look like they'd fit inside 16s as well. Can someone with access to interchange manuals give me an idea when they started using this setup, what is the disk size, and will they fit on any 8.8" rear?
My 2000 Merc has them ...Inside 16" wheels ... 8)
Bob....

they seem to have been on various crown vics from the early 90's
there are a lot of articles on them... 93 and up used 31 spline axles.. or was it 96 and up..
there are a bunch of articles about swapping them around..
the crown vics i thought already had a an 8.8 inch rear end..
here is a pic of how they come apart..

Thanks guys. Dang, one of those articles says the kit they're installing on a 9" has 11" disks and is the same setup as on Explorer rears. An 11" disk would be about right for what I saw on my rental car and the way it filled up the wheel. If that's the case then an Exploder 8.8" should have all the brakes you'd need for good stopping power on almost anything and a width that would fit a lot of cars. I'll testify that Grand Marquis stopped well for such an enormous barge. I was tiptoeing it around a blind onramp when I realized it was about to tighten up in front of me. Quick straighten the wheels, hard stab at the brakes, and I easily killed enough speed to keep from killing my rental against the Armco. I should be too old to play boy racer, I'm just not that smart.
