I was up at hooleys last weekend while i was picking up a 55 chevy i bought. and i cought him workin on the bonneville car, running in the fresh engine and it sounds killer. startin to come together looked like ..
The man is dedicated to the cause...I feel a new record comin on ...
It's probably bad luck to wish for one run on the monday and into impound, isn't it. Would be nice though. Looking forward to seeing the gang.

Unless the weather looks bad we will go a little easier than that. First run will probably be a license pass with Patrick on the short course in the 190's as he can't run over 200 until he gets that license.
Then we have to figure things out. All of our good runs have been before 11 in the morning due to the fact the salt gets slippery in the afternoon when the heat brings the moisture up. So we might try and stage ourselves in line to run Hooley Tues. morning unless there is plenty of time Monday to run both of them and also position in line for Tues in case we have to. The other problem will be to make sure we can cool the cooling water after Patrick's run. We don't want a repeat of last year.
Charlie you still getting here Wed. afternoon or when??

Tell me sumthin'
Does the idler pulley on a blower drive have grooves/teeth/splines on them?
If not, why isn't it run on the back of the blower belt?
If it was run on the back of the blower belt, you would have more degrees of arc contact on the blower pulley.
Just wondering.....
I've watched the build of the Stude on here since it's inception. Now I'm going to get to see it in person. Hooley would you mind if 4 Canadians stopped by the pit and gawked at the car for a while.
Sumner you and I have a couple of common friends, Denise (HRLC) being one. I would certainly enjoy meeting Hooley and you. Perhaps at the meet and greet or in the pits or Bend in the Road.
See you there,
Wayne

Hey for sure and stop by our pit, while we are in line or at the "bend in the road" and introduce yourself.

Harry here is a picture of the belt set-up and I would think he has it the way he does for clearance and maybe other reasons. You do know he is from Oklahoma and they tend to do things different there  . Now since Sam is from the same "state" of mind maybe he can tell us for sure.
c ya,
Sum
I think>>>>>> that you cant run three pullys with cogs very well with the flexability you have with a belt. it has to glide over one of them as it is an idler and not a drive gear... like a gear drive with the idler it merely keeps things in order but doesnt do anything else,, thats my story and im stickin to it...
The idler would be heavier with teeth. The alignment would be a problem. If the belt was on the inside, it would rub on most pump ext. With all the millimeter belts, it doesn't take alot of belt tension to be correct. With alum. heads and block, the expansion is considerable from the engine temp rising. The original Cragar 14 mm. dual idler setup for a 426 had one inside and one out. They only had one length of belt then that had to cover alot of ratios.
Because, Just because.
i wondered about the lack of the outside idler on the long span between the blower and the crank for years... i would think that must really streach out on fuelers... even with that being the pull side.. the reduction in streach might reduce the amount of belt failures... a high speed onboard camera would need to be installed on a fueler to tell...
just like someone did to solve the fuel flow cavatation issues that resulted in a redesign of tanks that put a funnel shape tank section to the main line to the pump... this put all the acceleration forces into feeding fuel into the pump inlet..
i don't think this is an issue with the stude.. it just has been floating in the back of my head for years...
it just may be like my idea of a hollow spoiler on the back of funny car bodys... with opening to the inside of the body... the air flow over the tip of the spoiler would create enough vacuum it could reduce the amount of air under the back of the body...
the only draw back was when i mentioned.. how it would be when the engine blew.. it would make a peacock tail of the flames from under the car...
i wish i could make it up there to the salt..
Sum,
I'm in Colorado Springs now. Gotta check some grumbling in the trailer hook up in the AM. I think 2 days of running the interstate in the rain sucked the ball mounts dry - or the sway control is binding.
Once everything is checked out I'm hoping it will be clear enough to take out the track roadster and play with it on the Pikes Peak toll road in the morning still. Won't make it out of Colorado on Monday, but maybe be in Blanding Tuesday afternoon late. Or not.

Charlie, if you get this in time don't worry about the grumbling. When the friction style sway control, which you have, gets wet it creaks. If by this morning it's dry you won't hear it.
Jack,
You were right, it was the sway control, but it must have been wet inside still. It drove me crazy so I took it off for the day.
I'm in a Montrose, CO RV Park tonight, Got a 7:30 appt. for the TB at the Chevy garage in the morning. Has a "gronk" sound in the left front under braking while turning. I suspect it's a hub going south, or related anyway.
Nice park though - so it's not all bad.

Hey all Charlie made it here fine and had no problem found on the car yesterday. He got in yesterday afternoon and we went on a long hike today and we are both beat, but plan on going on a shorter one in the morning.
I love the track roadster.
Hooley, John and Patrick are in Santa Rosa for the night and should be here tomorrow afternoon.
Got to get to bed,

I woke up at 4:00am so here I am on the computer. We had a flat on the trailer yesterday but we had just pull off the interstate to eat when it started to leak. We had it plugged at the only tire shop in town. $21 to plug a tire was a little pricey but we were glad we did not have to change it along the side of the highway. The Dodge diesel really pulls the trailer nice. The truck has a Banks controller that is adjustable and we are getting better mileage than the old Suburban and it has a lot more power. Hooley and I are spending our time talking about our plan for the runs on the salt. We have a few things to fix and change on the car when we get to Sumners today but nothing major. We will try to post updates as we have time but usually we are pretty tired by the time we get back to our room at night.
It sure is nice to be able to post on the rrt. I have got to find someone to help me fix my computer at home. (It does not like the rrt).
John
Might as well give another report from west of Laramie...Beck got here last night, too. Sum and I sorted out the on-board cameras yesterday so I guess I will be subbing for River1 on the video work....big shoes to to fill.
Sum was still verifying the data collection system today and both John and Hoolet had work to do on the car. I took Beck (Tom) out for some tourist stuff. We did Bridges Monument, Muley Point, Moki Dugway, Gooseneck and a tour of scenic Bluff, UT.
The Trailblazer is hauling the trailer/track roadster very well, however it could stand a couple hunnert more ponies and torque for those long and high Colorado passes. Some it crested as 20-30 mph but it never really complained. No overheating and averaging about 13 mpg overall.
Have had the roadster out of the trailer for rides the last couple days and had to adjust the clutch. Just started slipping, which a little more free play fixed.
I awoke Monday in Colorado Springs to a picture perfect day. I took the roadster up Pikes Peak as planned. When I got up to the toll both they told me they weren't letting anyone up the last mile due to ice on the road but they thought it would be open in an hour. It was 28F at the top. I drove up to the road block and decided not to wait, so went back down. Played a mild form of Mario Andretti and left town around 10 AM.
Charlie
Thanks for the reports. I sure miss not being there so I'm gonna have to live it thru youse guys. 8)
At least the weather here is perfect and I'll be up at the cabin with the grandsons and Murf next week so it will be a good vacation anyway. :D
I know I don't have to tell you but I will anyway......Have fun, be safe, and here's to Hooley breaking his own land speed record!
:b-d:
I just got off the phone with Johm, they went out the back door at 252mph, and are in impound. Record run in the morning.
ALRIGHT CAN I HAVE A "HELL YEA" ..........................I think we all thought it was a 255 car and that is proving it sam
HELL YA
that is great news!
I wonder what the entering speed was on that mile , since the exit speed was 252....
i am curious how much the car was accelerating.
found a place to pirate some net time. The run this morning was near perfect. Hooley actually qualified for a new record in the 2nd mile at 237, the 3rd at 240+ and the 4th at 249. Exit at mile 5 was 252. We had a good 4 hours at impound with some work to keep the wire plugs in the data collection device, ad aquick cleaning of the water pump which was blowing fuses. All working now. We cut the oil filetr, which was spotless clean so put on a new filter and topped up the oil. Haven't seen the on board video yet but I think Sum is down loading them tonight. I'm sort of the new River1 on video cameras - LOL.
Went to the Hop Up doings tonight where they inducted 5 new members in their 100 mph club. !00 with a flathead 4 cyl. A dust storm is blowing through here now, but tapering off. Temp was probably in the high 90's today, againg.
DRD57 is taking lots of pictures as usual. The track roadster has a liberal coating of salt - in and out. Actually looks a mess, but it's running good and I'm having a great time with it.
Hooley thinks he can enter the 2nd a lot stroger tommorow, so were lloking for a bump in the last mile. If we reset the record tomorrow and the car is still running sweet we will probably bump the power in the afternoon and try to get a new qualifying run eyt on Wednesday, or failing to have time, on Thursday. Cross your fingers. A record anywhere around 150 will put the stars and planets back in alignment with C, D & E/CC classes then slower the BCC - as they should be!
Charlie
Thanks for the updates.
Good luck in the morning and be safe.
Wish I was there.
Thanks for the updates, and GREAT JOB everyone.
Doug
you know, hooley always sets a record when i'm not there
maybe i'm the unlucky charm (http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b170/river1/smilies/hysterical.gif)
good job to all involved :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:
wish i could be there

I'm getting excited just READING about this. Awesome. Just plain awesome.
We had a great morning! Hooley reset the record at 249.945 ( we can always round it up to 250. He ran 253+ out the back door. With 2 top speeds over 250 he has now received his AA license.
The car got wounded slightly. Something caused enough crankcase pressure to push the front crank seal and front pan gasket oil and spread a little oil on the front of the engine. Hooley has elected not to try to repair it here as he has met his goal for this year. Everyone was okay with that. We're gonna spend the afternoon relaxing and pulling the pit stuff down. They will head home tomorrow and do the HAMB drags.
I'm gonna stay until Saturday as I have a spare transmission for the track roadster coming from San Jose. Supposed to be hear some time Friday.
There were more cars in impound yesterday than I have ever seen. The weather and the salt was near perfect.
Charlie
CONGRATULATIONS, HOOLEY!!!!!
Huge thumbs-up to all involved, what an incredible trip you guys have had this year !!
Thanks Charlie for keepin' us informed and glad you're havin' fun with the track roadster. Have a safe trip home.
Jim, I'm sorry you didn't make it either but I think there are a lot more records in Hooley's future and I hope to see one in person. No way are you an unlucky charm.
Sum, haven't heard from you about about the PVC sheets, offer still stands. Wish I had been with you and Charlie on the hikes.
Larry
Super! Good going guys on the new record.
Thanks Charlie for the reports, see ya home later.

Congratulations to all involved. Sounds like a good decision to put the car in the trailer. One record a year might be enough to keep the mindset going.
this is good news!!
I wish I had been able to attend the meet this year.. I missed it all . dammit
Me too :( Congratulations to all involved!!
Congrats to Hooley and the whole gang. We were out there but never caught up with them. Went looking on Monday afternoon but never found them. Turns out they were clear down at the end. Tuesday afternoon we saw the Stude in impund but everyone had already left. The runs we saw looked really good.
Once again congrats on the record.
Ditto here, Hooley called me today and told me all about it, said was going to go eat a big steak and hit the road in the morning, congrats my man..........we are all very proud to have you for a fast friend... sam
Thanks everyone! Hooley and John are on the road home. Keenan and Sean left yesterday to stop at Bo Huffs on the way to Blanding/Cortez. Sum, Beck and I are still hanging out. I went back to camp at lunch time to roast a couple brauts and the wind started up. I suspect runs might be over for today although sometimes the wind goes away as quickly as it starts.
Not sure yey whether the fellow from San Jose is gonna make it tomorrow with my transmission or not. He's supposed to call me tonight to confirm.
Charlie
Nice work Hooley :!: :!: Congrats :b-d:
Bob.......
The 974 guys have made my year. They took me under their wings and showed me how it is all done! I will never forget this experience. I had never met Hooley, John, Sum, Mark, or Keenan. I had bumped into Charlie a few times. What a great group of guys!
Charlie took a day of his time to take me sight seeing. If you ever get the chance take a trip to Southern Utah go! What beauty!
Sum's lakester is coming along nicely. It looks as good in person as it does in his photos.
All I can say about the salt flats is UNBELIEVABLE.
With the 974 car and this crew I got to see it all. Hooley's great driving and John's leadership in the pits and at the starting line is a winning combination. When you add Sumners knowledge this team is unbeatable. Tech - trouble in the first run - qualifying for the record - impound - record run - and tech again. The fastest B/BGALT in the country! What else could I dream for?
I can't thank these guys enough. There great!
Wow, great job guys! I've been at the cabin all week and have been wondering how things went this week. Big Congratulations and thanks for the reports. 8)
I am absolutely * that I missed seeing the guys and not having a chat.
I saw them early Monday morning as they pulled into the pits after their first run and the long looks on their faces wasn't good. Hooley was saying that might be the end for them but Sum was saying give it a test before deciding.
Unfortunately for me it wasn't the best time to be hanging around.
Went back the next day looking for them and it looked like they had gone home. If you're ever been there it's easy to miss cars and people and so we did.
I was sitting around having beers with some other local guys back at the hotel when I mentioned it and they told me they saw the car in impound and got the record and gone home.
While it was unlucky for me I'm wrapped that the guys did so well there and got the record so congratulations to them.
And as I was saying if you've ever been there ............I'm already thinking about going back again next year I love that place there's something about it.
Quote from: "Beck"The fastest B/BGALT in the country!
I goofed again, make that the fastest B/BGCC in the country!

I knew the last record he set was B/BGCC, but didn't argue because he might have changed classes
Hooley,
Congratulations on the GREAT job! Thanks for letting me, and the others on this board, be part of your team, even if it is vicariously. I know my name got fast salt on it a couple of weeks ago.

I finally got my pics downloaded. I'll do a little trip thread soon, but here's a teaser fron early in the morning on Wednesday before we reset the record.
Love them orange cars!
Charlie
Looks as though you really got it initiated with the salt.
I did about 125 miles on the salt along with a few trips into town. I washed the easily seen salt off on Monday and today I pulled all the flooring in the box and cabin, the seats, the hood, the belly pans, battery and roll bar and sprayed everything with salt-away again and finished flushing almost everything tonight. I'll have to make a little shinny shop vac tool to get in a few crevasses that still have dry salt in them. Kinda like taking a model car apart.
Charlie
Looks like your garage. Are you home already?
I got back Sunday night. Ran out of places to go....
Thank you everyone for all the kind words. It is still a thrill to go to Bonneville for all of the activites. It is good to see old friends and make new ones. The Salt was good to us this year. I missed you guys that couldn't make it. We thought about you often.
Bucket Mouth, I wanted to set down and visit since it had been 2 years.I found the goodies you left. I shared them with the rest of the crew. Thank You B.M. I thought you might be at the HAMB.
I'm thinking about retiring from my job in a couple of years and I haven't figured a way to afford to play with only the retirement pay. I hope something works out.
It was fun a usual to have a couple of new people at Sum's and the salt.
It brings back the thrill of my first time. Thanks Beck and Shawn for being on our team. Some one called our team "Hooley and the Hooliangns" go figure.
Hooley
Maybe we'll have to get one of those low-buck 50cc mo-peds.
Thanks Bucketmouth, for the can cooler and decal of your club.
Charlie
No worries at all Charlie
