The Rodding Roundtable

A bunch of us were sitting around the RRT encampment at the NSRA event in Kzoo last weekend and were discussing how much fun it would be to spend the day together just cruzn around the countryside visiting a couple of garages and viewing the awesome color changes on the trees.
We were thinking about Sat, Oct 20th. The colors should be at their peak and the temps should still be nice. Here is kinda what we came up with. Nothing is set in stone
9am meet at PurplePickup's place then taking back country roads.....
cruz to the Gilmore Museum. If you've never been the place is really neat with alot of barns filled with old cars and a old fashion diner. Have lunch at the diner or picnic on the grass.
Head to Muskegon for a tour of Ken's new garage via back country roads then over to CharlieChops, again using back roads. (Hopefully Ken and Charlie want to host this type of thing, they haven't been asked yet  )
Cruz somemore toward a neat place for dinner then everyone head for home. A full day of cruzn around with car pals and seeing some cool stuff.
For those not fimiliar, this would all take place in the south to mid part of western Michigan. Close enough for the folks from the Detroit area, northern OH, northern IN and northern IL.
Anyone interested??
Yes, but you knew that.
Possibly.. id have to check with the boss. If its nice enuff ill ride the bike if not ill have to take the grand prix.. Of course its also bow season ..
Im thinking.
Dave
Darn I won't be able too. I'll be out of town. Again
I'd be up for it as long as I'm not doing the Maxton thing that weekend. Sounds like HRLC will need a driver....
Bring them on!
Charlie
Cool! 8) Sounds good to me.
I checked Gilmore's site (http://www.gilmorecarmuseum.org/index.php/) and there aren't any events there that weekend. That's a good thing....no major crowds. They have a group price that requires a reservation for 12 or more people but the normal admission is only a dollar more per person.
If we do it we can find a nice scenic route like maybe over to South Haven then up the coast of Lake Michigan to Muskegon, or just about any small town/rural 2 lane. All suggestions are welcome.
Rosie's Diner (http://www.rosiesdiner.com/) in Rockford, MI is an interesting place to eat but it might not be on the way to anywhere. It depends on the route we pick.
Perhaps we can get together during the IDIDIT open house with our maps and preplan a route and then post it so that if folks want to join up along the way they can. I will then type it out and have copies on the 20th so folks won't get lost if seperated.
and I like the idea of a costal route
Okee dokee :D
WOW, I'd love to do this!!!! My aunt and uncle are coming to our house from the U.P. on the 18th, plans are to ride to brown county / nashville one day, but I'd sure like to include this trip in there!!! I have an uncle in holland (with a bike and cars also) maybe he could even hook up with us.
I'll have to see how things play out with our other trips.
Debb
FOUL<<<<FOUL!!!!!!! TOTALLY unfair,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Sounds like an absolutely great time for you all when some of us are a million miles away checking our antifreeze levels and parking the rides under cover for the year........................
Hope you all have a great time
Any chance you'll be traveling through Nebraska???? :P Sure sounds like fun!
Ought to be a fine time to dodge a few deer and view the leaves turning, if you can see past the blowing snow...!!
Wish I could do a ride along, but the Tampa show is that weekend, and there's a spot reserved under a tree for me and the tugboat. Of course I'll be relaxing in my shorts and tank top, walking through the swap meet in my sandals while putting on a little coppertone, but I'll be thinking of yuns...
Have fun and stay warm... :D

If you go on the 20th you'll have the whole place to yourself or at least be the only one there expecting a car show. Tampa is the week before  If you were thinking that because I'll be out of town, that's because I get back from Tampa probably on Tues and leave again Fri for Branson Mo. 8) "On the road again, just can't wait to get on the road again" Let me tell you it's a rough life being retired :P Have to make time to be home sometimes

There's a couple of good concerts at the Amphiteater that week, so I figured I save on parking.
Got a gun show coming that week too. I might buy a bazooka and go to Michigan to teach someone how to deer hunt....
Gotta run...
Who's playing when? When is the gun show? My son would definately be interested in that.

Quote from: "chopped"Is there a long distance award?
The only award to be had is the good fortune to hang out with a great group of people for a day or two in a most beeyoutifull part of the world. 8)
Skip, since you're an ex-Michigander that defected to the land of warm winters I'm not sure you're allowed back here anyway  Well....maybe you can come back once in a while if you stop telling us it's 85 degrees down there when we're having so much fun shovelling snow and scraping ice off our windshields. Just bring lots of beer :D
Quote from: "J Man"I would be interested if we are allowed to drive our daily.
You can drive whatever you'd like but we'd apprecaited it if the daily drivers pulled up the rear of the pack. Sound fair

Don't forget to leave your left blinker on; provided it hasn't fallen off the truck...
Take that fender off, flip it over, take a piece of 3/4" pvc pipe about 12" long, place it over the dent, press down and roll it back and forth with the palm of your hand. Should work okay; or you could put a Yamaha sticker over it, or one of those bullet hole stickers. Just don't tell people YOU shot it. They'll never believe it...  :0-0

Think of all the parts that'll fall off if he rides point. Things will get stuck in the tire treads, kick up into fenders, splash aprons and quarter panels, and basically cause dents and scratch paint. He should ride in the back with a blue light on and play Barney Fife in hot pursuit of the jalopy hoodlums. Sue could tie a cord around his johnson, and give it a yank every time she wants to hear the siren...   )bye(

I've got an idea for a dinner stop. It's called "The Barn Saloon and Steakhouse" and is located on US 31 between Holland and Grand Haven.Good food and a cool atmosphere. They moved an old barn and renovated it.A large dining room upstairs and a real neat area downstairs. They brought in a portable sawmill to build the place.Large beams, exposed fieldstone foundation, and a waterfall in the stairway from upstairs to downstairs. And it's also two miles from my house. You can check it out at http://www.barn31.com/.

Works for me.
I just talked to my buddy tonight,he said the guy had sold the frame separately, but still got 7G for the sheet metal.Dan's dad lives in the Chicago area so they will haul it there and arrange shipping to Calif.
It seemed strange to me that a guy from Calif. would come to the rust belt to find a solid body,it did look nice, but the prices here might be better than out there.
Thought I would bring this back up to the top.
I am more than willing to host a visit on Saturday the 20th. OBT has a prior commitment and will not be in town that weekend.
Have you guys put together a time line to see whether you're gonna stay overnight in Muskegon for instance or what?
Charlie
Timely for you to bring it up. The plan now is to Meet a George's(Hotrodpurplepickup) house at 9 am. We will leave from there, and head for the coast of lake Michigan, with a lunch stop along the coast. After lunch, we will head to Muskegon, and Charlies house. George has more details, I am not that familiar with the area. If you need directions to George's house, PM him, and he will set you up.
My car is put up for the year, so I will be in my daily. Don't think you have to bring your rod to participate. This is about seeing some nice country, meeting new friends, and visiting old ones. see you there.
I got animals to tend to so i cant stay over night.. In fact its gonna be down to the wire if i can attend or not. I think the grand daughter is gonna be back here and you know how that goes    She is my girl and ill pass if i have to to be with her and the step daughter.. Sorry but the kid comes first.
Dave
OK - just want to get sort of a handle on timing at my place, how many folks and cars. When we get that kinda rounded up I'll know how hospitable I'll need to be LOL) - how much water, pop, beer, snacks etc...and how many projects need to be shooed out of the shop.
Looking forward to it.
Charlie
Well, it would be a good idea if those planning to attend would post here so we get a handle on numbers
Ill let you know mid week ..
Dave
Like Charlie said,if you are planning a stop along the coast. My place and the restaurant I suggested are midway between Holland and Grand Haven.Don't know if the plan is to play it by ear or a set in stone schedule.I'd sure like it if you stopped at my place.I'm 2 miles west of US31.Let me know :-o :-o

I just got home from 3 days at the cabin up by Traverse City. I did about a 400 mile color tour on Saturday all around northern Michigan and the colors are a little different this year....from the hot summer I think. Many of the trees are still green, some are beautiful and some the leaves are gone.
In most years the colors are peaking big time around there on the second week of Oct. They're not as vivid this year. We went up the "tunnel of trees" from Harbor Springs up to the Bridge and the colors probably still have another week before they're peaking. Yes, we stopped at the Legg's Inn in Cross Village. 8)
Next weekend should be a good one to run up to Charlie's in Muskegon. If anyone wants to go just say so and we'll make it happen. We plan to take scenic roads for the most part and stay off of interstates. Originally we thought about stopping at the Gilmore Car Museum but if we're just planning a one day cruise we'll have skip it this time so we aren't pressed for time the rest of the day. It takes at least 2 or 3 hours to do the museum justice.
I'm not one for posting my personal stuff on the internet but if you're planning to go, PM me and we'll get you to my house. Like Frank said we'll plan to meet at 9AM and hit the road shortly after that. The schedule is sort of an organized play it by ear one.
Too bad Ken will be out of town. We'll have to make another trip up there to spill beer on his new shop floor some other time.
Sure wish I could be there.
Hooley
well, looks like its not going to fit into our plans :( my aunt and uncle coming down from the U.P to ride didn't really want to go back to MI , lol
they couldn't find anyone to care for their 2 dogs so they are bringing them to our house, we will need to make shorter runs so we can let them out every 12 hrs or so :P
you guys have fun, hopefully if you do it next yr we will be in!!!!
Debb
Well, since it doesn't look like anyone other than Frank and I are able to go, I'm going to have to cancel too and do something that I need to do real bad.
I've been treating the logs and caulking my cabin for the last few weeks and discovered that carpenter ants have gotten into a log and hollowed it almost completely out. I'm going to have to replace it but until I can't do that until I cut the right sized tree and cure the log which takes about 2 years. In the mean time I have to hog out the inside of this log and put a temporary filling in....sort of like a dentist. Winter is getting real close and I need to do that right away.
If there had been a bunch of people wanting to go on the color tour I'd have gone but since there aren't I'm going to go do surgery on the cabin instead.
This will be fodder for tech week on the log cabin forum. 8)
Well, we'll just have to come up with another excuse to get together in the near future.
Quote from: "enjenjo"Well, we'll just have to come up with another excuse to get together in the near future.
who needs an excuse?? yeah we do need to get together :)
Debb
Well, what can I say, except that I'm sorely disappointed? I kinda had a feeling this was going to happen. Not a problem at my end.
Actually, I'm involved in a shop remodel of sorts. Got a soft 12X20 building up and moved my '78 Seville out into it pending getting it ready to sell. I''m doing some new shelving and further finish in the storage room so that I can turn it into a fabricating area.
Charlie
Ive got the little one comming again and sue told me the other day that I hadnt seen her since the 4th of july so ill be spending the weekend pretty much with her..
Dave
Oh well, the best laid plans of mice and men.
We've been doing a fall cruise with a group here in Middle Tn. (Midnite Rodders) for 10-12 yrs now. We always have a good time. Usually around 75-80 cars. We sure get some strange looks going thru small communities that are off the main roads.
Quote from: "phat rat"Darn I won't be able too. I'll be out of town. Again
Took the words right out of my mouth.
That's a shame, it's suppose to be a beautiful weekend weatherwise.
I think I'll just go to that "rat rod" drag race in Austin TX then.
Well *, now I've got to unpack the car and cancel my reservations.
