Title: Is this a good price on a welder?
Post by: 48ford on October 13, 2005, 12:28:57 PM
I was at the welders place filling up my bottles and when I went in to pay i see they have a lincoln SP135 with a cart for $551.79,He told me he only has 4 of them.
Is this a good price?
Got me thinking.

I just bought  a SP135, gas ready, no cart, for $404 shipped to my door. Tool Connection has carts for $50 or so.

Would this welder be good up to 1/4" welding?

It will di 1/4", but you have to be careful. Preheating helps. It does a great job on 3/16.

If I only had one mig I would really want it to be a 220 volt.  I had a 110 Miller that was really nice and used it for all the body work on my truck.  I just didn't feel comfortable with it on thicker metal even though it was suppose to do 3/16, so I sold it and got a 175 amp 220 volt miller for about $100 more than the one in this post and have been really happy with it.

It is easy to look like you have a good weld with a mig, but then find out that the penetration just isn't there especially if you are welding something like a cross-member in where a lot of heat can get sucked away into the surrounding metal.
