Title: Tools you toss out, sell , get rid of?
Post by: Crosley.In.AZ on January 01, 2025, 07:30:26 AM
Since we bought this house and moved (again)..  I have been sorting out stuff here. Do not view this as organizing .... LOL

I have tossed out about a dozen small tools.  Those tools you keep "just because" ..

I had some old utility knives (3) .. The ones that a screw must be removed to get out a new blade and change to that new blade. I've had the new design easier blade change design for a long time (20 yrs? ).  I tossed the old utility knifes. I have bought 4 new utility knives in the last 30 days. Stanley 10-499 and 10-788; I think I like the 10-499 better. Simpler, easy to use

Old worn out wire stripper - crimper pliers. 2 pair of them, tossed out. That may have worn out or contacted live wires by accident when cutting copper wire?  Bought 2 new pairs: Irwin 2078309  and Klein 1009

I've been tossing some old tools, keeping others.  Just can't seem to toss old screwdrivers.  They always come in handy for other things, like last week when I discovered I needed to re-remove the rear window on the Corvair because it had sagged down too far, and the vented cowl below it wouldn't fit. The buytyl rubber ribbon was tough to get out, being so new.  I took an old pocket screwdriver, heated the tip and bent it at a 90* angle and used it to dig out some of the butyl before using a wire to cut it.

It kept resealing itself after cutting with the wire. A couple guys online suggested lubing the wire with something slippery.  I used paraffin wax and it worked great.  Got the window out and everything cleaned out; waiting for the new ribbon.

I've got more old screwdrivers waiting to be used for 'special tools' in the drawer.

I never tools tools away  . I lose enough  as it is . I probably have 4 or more sets of sockets for each drive . Have to move them around from set to set to make any complete .Still have my craftsman ratchets bought new in 1980 though!

Ya, I do not toss out sockets or similar tools.. Unless they are some cheap stuff I bought while on the road or something.. Then they need to be broken.  I have too many scroow drivers too.  ALways looking at new design scroow drivers that come out at what seems yearly now?

I too had multiple sets of sockets, ratchets, extensions, yada yada .. I sold many sets on eBay when we were down sizing for retirement.  About $2800 dollars worth.. which I ended up giving to my brother when he was in a bad place $$ wise

I tossed an automatic wire stripper out weeks ago.  It was a cheapie unit I bought many years ago. It has never worked well, but I kept the tool.

Couple months ago I bought a Klein 11063w automatic stripper tool.  It works waaaay better than the cheapie tool I recently tossed out.

I have a small box full of modified, cut off, welded, heated , bent  wrenches.  If you ever worked full time on automotive stuff. You have modified a few tools for that 1 application.

Outside of Snap On screwdrivers I don't keep them very long. I do knock the handles off the junk ones and repurpose them as file handles, or to replace broken handles on screwdrivers with good tips.

I almost never throw away a tool unless it's broken beyond repair. But I have been known to give them away.

It was suggested (told) to me today that we are tossing out a very old Black n Decker finish sander. My wife  tried to use it on some exterior stuff around the garage door we just had installed. We have several sheets of flat sand paper the sander is designed for.

I can not quote her eggzack words here, but the B & D sander is headed into the bin.  Years back , we bought a Ryobi sander often called the mouse sander... It uses the hook n loop style sander paper in triangle shape. It works well,  Wife likes it.

I guess the Black n Decker sander was kept around too long ?  LOL

As I was trying to  set up the table saw fence to rip some boards to 2 inches wide.  It was a struggle ...so I checked the Harbor Freight Pittsburgh brand tape measure. I have 2.

Tape measure was off just over 1/16 inch via my checking with a machinist 6 inch rule I have.  I tried to correct the tape measure and was unsuccessful.  Tossed that tape measure into the bin.  The other HF tape measure was correct.
