Title: Ford third member ID Tag
Post by: Dusty on August 24, 2020, 11:10:19 PM
I picked up a Ford 9" about a week ago, and I'm confused about the Tag description.  I have not stripped it yet, only took off the brake drums.  The tag has the 2 lines of stamped code.

The first line has  WDM-U, which shows to belong to a Ford F-100 '63-'76.
Second line reads 3.70 Which is an open 3:70 gear, Where it should show 9 for a 9 inch, it has 8 CC the last 3 numbers is the date code 3-0-2.  I have a couple others that have 8 00 for the 8 inch gear, and one that is 8.7, which is the 8.75 inch.  I just don't understand the 8CC on this one.

Does this help? I did read that on newer stuff, the date code was in the 1st line and the last numbers were the assembly plant code.

This is a different series from what I have.  My gear size on the tag is listed as 8CC?????  Everything points to a 9".  Like I said my gear ratio code is WDM-U, which is an open 3:70.  Where your tag example shows the Plant where produced my tag series shows Vehicle and ratio.  I have not seen a code tag like yours.  Must be late model stuff.  I want to know what 8CC on my tag stands for.

If it's an 8" it has been changed, and I'm not sure you can put an 8" gear on a 9" carrier.  Everything points to a 9" with 28 spline axles in an F-100 PU.  I just looked again, it is definately an 8 CC the "C'S" are very pronounced.  I'll know for sure when I open it up.  Gotta wait till Laura passes over.  Looks like it is going right up the Sabine river....My backyard.

I took a picture of the tag, but I have forgotten how
to reduce the size to post it.  I tried but it got kicked out.

If you can reach the bottom carrier bolt with a socket, it's an 8" carrier. If you can not, it's a 9" carrier.

No it's a 9" housing for sure. Box end only.. It still doesn't explain the 8 CC for the ring gear size on the production tag

1968, March 3rd, is what I think it is.

Thats an 8" housing in the picture.  However, with the WDC-AT model Number,
it's a 9" from a ford passenger car from '66 to '69. or a Mercury '66-'67, or
a'67 T-bird.  It's a 3:00 ratio open, 28 spline.

I'm using the tag as an example. From 1960 to 1970, the 1st digit is the year, the alphabet letters were month and date according to the info I found. If your tag is the same layout, that should be correct.

The series of tags I have seen have the ring gear size right after the ratio,
which would be the second entry on the second line, again, right after the ratio.....

Plant codes and date codes are all that I find with digits and letters combined. The last tag I posted is from the era that the wdm classifies it as. This is the most complete listing that I know of:

Yeah...I have all of that, I think there are 10 pages of the years I'm interested in.
Thanks for all your input.  When this "Laura" leaves here I'' pull the pumpkin and
see what is in there.
