Hi Kids ...It is with a heavy heart that I post this ....The good news is that Cathy & I seem to be OK .... The "Ugly Olds" , well, not so much soo..... :(
We were traveling home from a show & short stay at our sons house Monday afternoon, on the Interstate , just kinda cruising along in traffic at the speed limit, A/C blowing cold & enjoying good tunes, when the L/Rear tire blew ... :-o
It lost the complete tread, just like a semi-truck tires we see so often...
From what the people that stopped to help said, I was able to sorta control the first 180* spin on the pavement , then went off the road, at speed, backwards over an embankment...
The car landed on the R/Rear corner, spun another 180* & thank God , landed on its wheels ....
This allowed us to slide to the bottom of the embankment in the proper direction to stop in the trees & brush at the bottom of the hill...
Again, many people stopped to help, we are very thankful for that ...We both had seat belts on, as we normally do..
At this point we are still kinda gathering all the bits & pieces as Monday afternoon & yesterday were kind of a blur..
The state troopers & first responders were there within minutes & could not have been more helpful & professional. :b-d:
We actually had somewhat of a "search party" on the side of the road, as when the car landed the trunk popped open, completely emptying its contents down the embankment ...It seems that we actually drove over our own luggage before coming to a stop in the trees.. :?
As far as the Olds, I have not had a chance to inspect it completely at this time ...All four fenders are damaged, the tire tread broke loose the fuel filler neck, the running boards are bent & the rear lower body is "crunched"....
My main concern is the undercarriage & suspension ... As many of you know, the front end was a prototype for the Heidt's "Universal Series" of Mustang II suspensions...The rear suspension was the stock "truck arm" style that we rebuilt & added a late GM rear end to....
We cannot get under the car to assess anything, but can see bent lower control arms & other damage to the front end with possible damage to the rear end .....
On the bright side, a couple of ironic things .....
We had just stopped about 5 miles before the crash at a local truck stop for lunch & fuel ...We were congratulating ourselves on the 21+ MPG we were getting up to that point .....( Note to Phil, 58 Yeoman, We had stopped at the "Dixie" & crashed just North of there ) ...
The second thing... We found a big bug "splattered" on the trunk lid...That's the first time I ever killed a bug, traveling BACKWARDS
The strange part.....The grille, front chin, all the cast aluminum parts that truly make the Olds "Ugly", appeared to survive with just scratches & bruises ...
I will try to post some photos , after I FIND the camera.....
Bob...
Glad to here you and Kathy are all right.
Now you can fix that rust spot on the quarter panel you were meaning to fix.
Is this a Grundy or Hagerty insurance claim? I will be curious to see how long it takes to actually get the car fixed.
We don't want this one in line behind your A. :)
Glad to hear you are OK . Sorry to hear of the olds . Hopefully it can be rebuilt .
You sir are living a blessed life.
Wow! That was frightening to hear much less experience! Glad to hear you are both okay.
Wow! Good that you two are ok, Bob. We're getting too old for those kind of thrills.
Glad to hear you and Cathy are OK. Hopefully the damage to the suspension is just having to bolt on new parts and there's nothing bent frame-wise.
Another reminder to keep your tires up to date. Radials definitely have a use by date. I have had old stock radial self destruct in less than 100 miles.
Wow Bob...glad you're okay. Hope the car makes it through this.
Glad to hear you're ok. Sounds like a mess. Hope it's not too painful getting everything squared away. :)
Zowie, Bob :!:  That's a tough break, man. :( Whew and a scary read, too. Real glad to know y'all are faithful about seat belts, and even more so that nothing got in the way. Glory be. Sounds like the ug was doing great. I gotta go buy tires right quick now but you keep us informed as he drama unfolds. Fingers crossed for your rod...
Wow. Quite the story. Glad you kids are OK.
What a ride, sure glad you are all OK.
Glad you both are okay...The Olds can be resurrected. Going thru this with my 36 sedan.
Wow that's pretty scary. Hope all plays out well for you.
Wow, glad you weren't injured. That had to be a pucker moment!
WOW!
Scary business, that. Glad you're not hurt, hope you can salvage the car.
Glad you & the Mrs. are ok. I had a comprehensive claim w/ Grundy a few months back, couldn't be happier w/ their handling of it. Nothing compared w/your accident, we hit a crow at 75mph, did some paint & cowl damage, actually bent the cowl at the base of the windshield on a '40 Ford.
Gee Bob I,m glad you two are ok and I hope you can save the ugly one.
I'm sorry to hear of your mishap, Bob, but I'm glad it wasn't worse!
While you were playing demo derby  , we were up in northern NY, gathering info for the trip you had planned in September.
Are you still planning to go, either with, or without, the Olds, or has this unfortunate incident caused you to abort your plans?
Glad to hear that you are OK. I remember well, and still have the magazine with the article on putting that Heidts universal MII front end in.
I always liked that car and I hope you will be able to resurrect it.
Looking forward to seeing pictures.
Well ..As promised ..Some photos .....Our insurance company is American National..Otherwise known as "Chrome" ....I cannot say enough good things about the way that they have handled our claim ...Everything started with a trip to our regular family Doctor for a verification that we both were OK ....He advised that Cathy was in great shape & that I was in as good of shape that could be expected for an "Aged & Infirmed" old guy .... The best part ...NO CHARGE  ..When I asked for a bill to process to the insurance people, he advised, "why waste their money?? We have done nothing but discuss it & you both seem fine....." 8)
When I advised the adjuster, she about went nuts & said that they want to work with more doctors like him ...
An adjuster came to the house promptly & inspected the car ....He provided an estimate on what he could see & put an notation that the complete undercarriage was considered an "open", and would be inspected at a later date ...
We received a check 2 days later to get the repairs in motion & decided that we would replace the bent chassis parts ourselves as we could find no one in the area to complete ALL the repairs to our satisfaction....
We did a thorough inspection of the bottom & provided a supplement to the adjuster with verifiable pricing & it was approved with another check in the mail one day after he received it .....The biggest concern of everyone we talked to at American Modern was that we were ok & how could they help to get our car repaired as quickly as possible ....VERY-VERY nice people to work with .....They are still considering the repair claim open at this time in case further issues are found ...
I can post a few photos ..You guys can see the damage...The car will go to the body shop as soon as we repair the bottom ...It will go on their frame machine to verify that the frame has not been compromised ....
All in all...After reviewing everything,God was watching over us as this could MUCH-MUCH worse ....
Hopefully , we will see everyone at the Zoo......
Bob..
You said American National and American Modern. I'm guessing you meant American National. :) Does anybody sell rear fenders???? You don't need to bring that to me. You would be comparing me to those other people that weren't good enough. :) I hope this goes rapidly and well for you.

Oops ... American National...AKA " Chrome" .....
No fenders are available ..I found some rears on ebay for $350.00 each...You can actually see through them ..The seller advises " Some rust repair required" .. :? :?
How soon do you want them :?: Watch for the brown truck to deliver a BIG ,( the fronts are 6'++ long), box ....
Attached below is the culprit....
Bob..
I found this one Bob http://www.ebay.com/itm/1940-Oldsmobile-NOS-left-rear-fender-1940-1942-1939-/381808846677?_trksid=p2385738.m2548.l4275
The right one looks repairable to me, but I am not there.
Are chevy and olds fenders the same?
Quote from: "kb426"Are chevy and olds fenders the same?
Yes, and no. Will one fit where the other one was? Yes. Are they the same? No. Olds fenders are wider, wheel opening is slightly different, and have a fuel fill door on the left side.
You guys are hunting fenders? Hunt a real bodyman who would enjoy the fixing.
Bob I still think the graceful landing was pure instinctive skill, and that your old car is way tougher than one might think. The underneath looks like it had a decently soft landing but most of the thump was that right rear of the body. Nice save if you ask me. Glad folks have been helpful for you so you can relax and count blessings.
Fortunately, I think there is enough time in the estimate to repair both rear fenders ...They seem to have taken the biggest hit ....All four fenders & the running boards got some damage but the rears are the worst .....
Both bumpers & bumper irons are bent ...The rear of the body under the deck lid is rolled under on the left side ...
The good news is that they were good thick, rust free fenders when we built the car ,so they should take some "beating" to put back in shape .... The boards can be straightened, (again, you should have seen what we did to make then straight the first time ... Lets just say a sledgehammer was involved ...  ) ...
The front control arms really moved around but did NOT break.....A true testament on how Heidt's built that stuff back then....
:b-d:
Very little in the front suspension is straight ....... All the parts you see that are curved.....Are not supposed to be ....
Bob....
Geez, Bob. I thought you said you wrecked your car. I get that much body damage in the parking lots!
When I had my 41 Poncho, I was looking for rear fenders, as mine was a fastback, and the driver couldn't see the right rear. I did find two NOS in St. Louis for $400 for the pair. That was a good deal for me. I had found one earlier, but didn't realize that there were different size Pontiacs; the one was for the smaller car.
Good luck getting your car back on the road, Bob.

Thank You for looking Frank .. I checked it ....That's for a "90" series car , (The big one on the Cadillac series body), you can tell by the gas filler door ....Mine has an exposed filler neck & cap ...( I have the "cheap" 60 series car like a Chevy) ...
Bob...

Can you imagine the outcome if your car cast had aluminum suspension like new cars? Love steel. Sure is good to hear of your satisfactory collision repair process. :D
Wow, what a mess! The car really absorbed some forces for you. She's a good one and took care of you all the way to stop. Nothing is more important than being OK when it's all done, but it's going to be a good thing when Ugly Olds is better than new.
We are making progress .....We completed replacing the bent suspension parts, looked the frame over REAL good , found a bent front frame horn ... It still needs to go on the frame table to be measured ... We were able to repair & re-position the front crossmember back where it belongs... This makes the front sheet metal fit better.. 8)
Looking back, altho it doesn't show that much on the outside, the car did take a heck of a wack when it landed....
How else could we get grass & dirt in places we never knew existed  ( Like INSIDE the front crossmember tubing :?: )
The lower control arms were not only bent in a "U" shape, they were both bent to the front... ( Tubes were twisted)...
I'm just thankful the car was built with the Heidt's parts ...I don't know if imports would have held up as well.....
Cathy & I are just thankful for MANY things...
The car didn't roll.....We landed going backwards, (putting us further into the big cushy seats rather than into the dash ), the tire tread did not rip off the gas tank filler neck, the list goes on....
We are still trying to make K-Zoo & the Nats Northeast trip...
Bob...
Bob,
Ran into your North Shore "posse" in Louisville. Your body man seems pretty confident the Olds will be in Kzoo. I was glad to hear that.

We're hoping so Tony .... :D We still have all the plans made to continue on from K-Zoo through Canada to the North East Nats the following weekend .... 8) We have the suspension pretty well completed , the car will be trailered for an alignment tomorrow night ... After that it's on to the body shop ... Hopefully , the only thing left on the bottom for them to complete is a bent frame horn ....
Bob....
Maybe in all this you can find the time to change the color.
That shade of blue did much to contribute to the ugly factor.
Actually, it will be re-painted complete in the exact same color .... But this time they have talked me into using some kind of special spiffy "Two-Stage" paint with clear & shiny & all that stuff .... They say that my favorite acrylic enamel "Centari" is no longer available ...In fact they tell me that Dupont is not around anymore ... I guess that I really need to get out more .....
Too bad we cannot complete it in time for K-Zoo & beyond ... :( We will still be going as a "spec-tater".......The first time in 20 some years we will be there without a car ....
Bob...

Bob...
Bob, I painted my Yeoman with Centari in the early 90's. I painted a lot of VW's with that and really liked it.
Bob, where are all your friends when you need to borrow a rod? :)
You'd probably rather be a spec tater than thrash to finish the fix. I like blue, and the old colors done in new base / clear formulas will usually knock your socks off, man. Beats going into pocket for jamb labor.
Bob , I must be out of the loop with auto finishes as well . Last thing I painted was centauri acrylic enamel . Also did not know that DuPont was gone , they were a sponsor on my dragster . I will paint my T with a single stage product if they are still available when that time comes . I want to be able to fix road rash easily like in the good old days .
Dupont was bought out by Axalta about a year ago. Nothing much changed but the label. Last I checked Centari was still available.
I'm in the process of painting my 26 RPU using BASF RM Uno HD Single stage acrylic urethane in Washington blue and Wimbledon white.
Very nice paint.
Ill be using Washington blue and Tacoma cream for the wheels , my wheels are spokes. I saw you got that colour from the model A truck on the hamb . That post sold me on that shade too ! I knew what I wanted I just didn't know what it was called .

Should be easy to find, Roadway Express used Model A Washington blue as the base color on all their trucks until 2008.
THANKS Enjenjo , there's a tidbit that should find a lesser expensive fleet industrial paint .

I checked for Centari & found the only thing close is now Nason "Ful-Cryl II". Its called a "Single Stage" paint but requires an "activator" to be used with special reducer :?: :?
I guess as long as it comes back looking good that I will be satisfied... Cathy has already advised the shop that if anything happens to the cartoon on the deck lid that they can ALL start looking for different employment....
I saw the car today & it looks like it will be much nicer this time ..Prolly means more work for me cleaning / polishing /etc in the future .
After I let the painter talk me into the "new style" paint, I replied, "as long as I can still go through drive-in car wash's, I suppose it will be OK".....He looked at me very strange.... :?
See you guys at the Zoo....
Bob...
Quote from: "kb426"Bob, where are all your friends when you need to borrow a rod? :)
KB..Because he scheduled things wrong & now cannot complete the Olds , the body shop owner that has the car offered me the use of his '33 Ford sedan or his '49 Ford pickup...If we were not continuing on to the East coast after K-Zoo, I would have considered his offer ...He feels bad as he thought that K-Zoo was the weekend of the 16th & was trying to have the car completed by then .....We already have arrangements made for rides on & off the grounds to the show ...Once on the grounds, I get a little "Kamikazi " scooter to get around on anyway .....
Bob...
What's up, Bob? Inquiring minds want to know. :)
Quote from: "kb426"What's up, Bob? Inquiring minds want to know. :)
This is about the status as of early this week ..... :D
I have not been pestering them...
They are doing LOTS of work on the car ...It will be better than it ever was from what I am told ...
NO MORE drive through car wash's ....
I should get it back just in time to park it for the winter :?:
Bob..
I see you opted for the less expensive fender skirts and window darkening...
^^^^^^^
I love this place! LOL
Those window and fender covers are there for the big reveal later on .
Quote from: "purplepickup"I see you opted for the less expensive fender skirts and window darkening...
Actually ....It's an attempt to make the car more fuel efficient ... We figured that lighter is better & those rear fenders are paper thin..
They weigh next to nothing...How about the yellow trim :?: Much-Much lighter than the stainless it is replacing..
Do you think that idea will stick & hang on :?: :?:
Bob....
Quote from: "chimp koose"Those window and fender covers are there for the big reveal later on .
No, he has a trench coat for revealing himself.
^^^^
Bob, I think he knows you. :)

Bob...
you must be excited !
Lookin' good, Bob.
This comes to mind:
Gettin' closer. :)
Boy howdy :D 8) Thanks for the update. You guys are making good lemonade out of that bushel. :)
All the "Ugly" parts are still there too :!: 8)
Bob..
Bob, are there any upgrades being planned?
Quote from: "kb426"Bob, are there any upgrades being planned?
Well .. The paint is shiny this time ..
All the tires are NEW....
The trunk weatherstrip is new...
We installed power steering ...
We made the bumpers shiny....( Not chrome..Just shiny)...
The running boards were re-covered with new moldings...
WHEW :!:
We did a BUNCH :!:
Bob..
I'm sure you will be very happy, especially with the ps. :)
My 5 year older brother and his buddy up the street had a 40 Olds coupe when I was a little kid in the late 50's. They worked endlessly on that car, and never did get it running. I guess they didn't know as much as they thought they did. It was red. I remember it well. The Omar bread man would stop every day to see how they were doing, and they always bought a bag of powdered mini donuts from him, and I got a few every now and then. :D
When I mentioned that the paint looked a lot shinier than it ever has been , they sent me this the next day .....
I guess that they will now "BUFF" the surface .... Does that mean that I'm going to drive a naked car :?:
Bob..
Just drive it in the rain, Bob...it'll be shiny then.
Bob, if you're not excited, call the morgue. :)
You have a bit of pearl in it this time?
Quote from: "enjenjo"You have a bit of pearl in it this time?
Not that I know of ... :? I told them as long as I could still buy touch-up paint from the hardware store that I would be happy .... 8)
Bob..
Looking really nice Bob. Now you have to call Wardlow and get a bra for it. A buddy of mine had a similar experience in his '40 Ford last week. Going home from a show, one of his front tires blew at 70 mph, took him across three lanes of I-55 but he managed to keep it shiny side up and stop on the shoulder. It was a car he built, sold and bought back again after a couple years. Seems the PO had a tire issue and instead of replacing the tire he put a tube in a tubeless tire and something n the wheel/tire/tube combination wasn't compatible and the tube let go.
I have learned my lesson guys..... We ALL need to start watching our tires more closely now .... It seems that the don't make 'em like they used to....
AND... Back then when we were younger & invincible, we prolly didn't travel at the speeds like we do today without a second thought..
Bob...

You have that mortgage thing confused with the "Tape Measure Game"... :? It works like this :
Take your favorite tape measure & clip it on your belt... Extend it to 88" ( The average male life expectancy )...Now retract your age in inches..

Is that like the gag where you test a man's IQ with a tape measure? Tell a buddy to hold his arms out and you measure from fingers to nose then ask him to hold the tape to his forehead then measure straight out that far, lock it and woops ow, dropped it, sorry.
I think the Olds is pretty ugly now.
You have to read that with the correct inflection. Like funny haha vs funny peculiar. Emphasis on the pretty. It has been said some GPs have a face only a mother could love. I bet you are gonna love that mother, Bob. :D

Let the work begin :!: :!:
Bob...
We're all waiting. :) What is the smurf story?
Hot diggity dawg lookathar :!: Eeee hooo now thats BLUE! 8) :D My my my Bob thats downright snazzy. So proud of you for allowing yourself to be persuaded into modern paint, and you're a swell peach for pitching in. It looks slicker than owl snot on a greased glass doorknob. That owl snot is good for tendonitis as well... trying to tone down the Ozark speak here but I'm excited for you and the lady. :)
That is definitely BLUE; I like it. Blue is my favorite color, I had my '57 Chevy painted a blue almost like that, and my granddaughter would absolutely love it.
Hey Guys .......HE'S BAAACCCCKKKK :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:
