Not sure what happened when I put the engine back in Vickie's car. Re installed the carb, cap and plug wires. I installed the wires in the wrong order due to two different marks on the cap. Backfired the engine with a Holley on it so I replace the power valve trying to get it to run right, still not running correctly.
Cleaned the plug, re gaped, reinstalled. I can pull the wires and see all eight are firing but I can remove four of them and there is no change to the idle.
Thought?

A rag in the intake?
No, I only removed the carburetor to mount the lifting plate.
Ran good before I pulled it.
Because I see a dual point distributor, that would be where I would start looking. Are you finding juice at the end of the plug wire or at the cap end? If it's at the plug end, did one set of points become out of time so there isn't ignition at the proper time? Just shooting in the dark but are the no change cylinders every other cylinder in the firing order?

I am going go try and reset the points tomorrow. The wires on the cap are the 4 I was running on. I checked for spark at the cap.
Home late tonight so no garage time tonight.
Running on 1,3, and 6,5.
Here are my thoughts before I go back at it.
Points are firing so it is not the points. Possible a condenser, Plugs or cracked cap. I will start with a condenser and then try moving the plugs around or a different plug if I have the right ones.
I have another distributor to put in it but I don't want to taking parts off my car till this one is up and running.
Planning on swapping out my ignition system in my car this winter to a Mallory Unilite system. Hope to post good news later tonight.
Dave ... Check your firing order again & verify that it matches the cam that you are using ....289/302 is one firing order...LATE 302HO & 351 are another firing order ....The fact that it backfired on the first attempt tells me something is wrong.....
Bob..
Why do you have to be like that Bob...... :( I headed out before you responded.
Not the plugs. not the condenser. Cap and rotor looked good.
I started back over from point A I need to set the points again and according to Bob, put the plug wires on in the correct order and label my firing order paper for YEAR OF ENGINE.
Is the firing order the answer?
Did not make it to the garage last night. My wife is sick so I picked up dinner on the way home from work and spent the night in the house.
I will try and get out there tonight. Temps are dropping so that's usually when I end up in the garage. :)
Take care of Wife :!: :!: :!: The car can wait ......REMEMBER...Happy Wife ...Happy Life .... 8) :!:
Bob...
Bob wins a free beer. If you don't want it, it won't go to waste😁
And Vickie is happy the car runs again.
WIN WIN
WOW :!: :!: :!: You mean that I'm more than just another pretty face :?: :?:
I'm happy that the Boss is happy ....Tell her I said to get well soon...Chicken soup is the answer ... :!: :!:
Dr. Bob..
It could be a blocked jet in the carb, years ago I had a 55 Olds that only ran on 4 but was getting spark on all 8 that after taking carb apart I found a blocked jet and then it ran on all 8.
Much simpler then that Jeff.
Screw loose behind the wheel.
I put the wires back on for the early 302 and not the late 302.
I did a tune up many years ago in my teens and wondered why it ran so rough until I saw all the plug wires on the drivers side were left off . How many times have I had a no start only to see the rotor sitting on the fender ! To my credit I have never sucked a rag into a running motor .
I have had a few run on 7 cylinders for a bit. Then I shut em off and put the number one plug back in.
