Hooley and I thought we would start a post devoted to his rebuild of the 974 to run at Speedweek 2013. He has posted some under the Ohio mile post but this topic will be devoted to Bonneville. Some of you on this site have helped us in the past and I know some of you will be on the salt with him this year. Hooley has trouble resizing photos, so he will send them to me and I will post them as I have time.
Sumner has updated his site with new information as well as all the previous post on the original build, the modifications, and the runs at Bonneville. Go to http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/hooley/hooley-index.html
John
You can find the Ohio mile post here.

The Top Hat for the carb that was modified by Doug Lee. This is part of the pressurized turbo system and it needed ears welded on so that it could be attached and would withstand the boost pressure. Doug has been helping Hooley with technical advise and fabricating.
John
This is a shot of the transmission. Hooley changed out the overdrive ratio to meet the needs of the new engine. Today he was changing the rear end gears back to the previous Bonneville ratio. The Ohio mile had required a different ratio than Bonneville.
Looks good... If things hold together, my wife and I will be at Speedweek 2013.
it will good to see & chat with the folks again, its been toooo long
Thanks John, great pictures by all and excellent planning as usual.
Phil and I did some work on the "motor home away from home" today. We're making plans.
Do you have any idea whether we are meeting in Blanding or straight into Bonneville?

Sumner will be here within the next month, and I will see what the plans are for the trip to the salt.
John
I forgot to mention that Sumner did a lot of the work on the part that I call the Top Hat. The connector for the carburetor to the plumbing from the turbos. Sumner spent a lot of time removing an internal divider in the top hat and making the adapter to the carburetor.
Sumner relayed to me that the direct link to this years rebuild is on his site http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/hooley/hooley-index.html
Hi guys, haven't posted on here forever but still check in on you guys from time to time and talked to Frank the other day and of course John and Hooley all of the time.
Anyway I gave John the wrong 'direct' link to Hooley's build for this year. It is....
http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/Hooley%202013/13%20-%20construction%20menu.html
So besides the pictures John will be posting here check in on that link if you are interested.
Ruth and I hope that as many of you that want to stop at our place on the way to B'ville this year. We will do a group dinner the night before driving up there. Hooley plans on bringing the car by a few days before that as we have a number of items to add to the car at our place. Since we probably will be swamped with work doing that I probably won't be able to guide any tours in the area, but there are lots of places to visit if you show up a few days early and I'll point you in the right direction.
Hope to see a number of you at our place and on the salt,
Sumner and Ruth
I forgot to add that Hooley has way more done on the car than I've been able to post. Basically all of the turbo plumbing is done and work on the back of the car and also the vertical stabilizer structure for the wind.
We are in Florida working on the one boat and as I have time I'll post more of his work on the build pages,
Sum
Sum,
Can you go as high as the image with the rear side plates? I don't have a current rule book, but I thought it was limited to 10" or so above the trunk.
Doug
Quote from: "sirstude"Sum,
Can you go as high as the image with the rear side plates? I don't have a current rule book, but I thought it was limited to 10" or so above the trunk.
Doug
The following is from the 2013 rule book.
"Wing width including side plates shall not be wider than the outside width of the body. The maximum allowable height of the wing including side plates shall not exceed 65 in. from the ground as measured to the highest part of the wing. The rear of the wing including side plates may not be set back more than 18" behind the rear of the body. The lowest portion of the wing shall be at least 6 in. above the highest point of the body. The total wing area (measured by the fore-to-aft dimension times the side-to-side dimension on the top surface) shall not exceed 1152 square in. Multiple element wings are NOT allowed."
From what we read and looked at the wing has to be above the tallest part of the car. I figure that to be the top of the car. This one is about 10" if I remember right. It can't be more than 65" off the ground. I figure it is under that. We want know till it is on the ground.
Today I am working on a box to mount the chutes in and sink them into the trunk . I had some stainless steel left from putting the floors in. I am not real happy with my build. A box can be hard to get right.
I will mess with it some more this afternoon.
Thanks John forgetting this going you have done a good job.
Hooley
Thanks for the info, and see you all on the salt this summer
Doug
Doug, That is good to hear. Will Odde be with you?
Hooley
Odie is coming and we are bringing another "salt virgin" this trip. Was just talking to Odie yesterday about the trip. Another friend of our might make the trip out too from Oregon, but won't know until summer.
Doug
Here is the new chute box. Two chutes now instead of one. I will let Hooley answer the question and I will post the picture.
New push bar setup.
A lot has happened since the last post. Sum came by for a few days. We got a lot done during that time. He took several jobs home with him. There is still more electronic stuff to do and buy. I seem to be in crunch mode, there doesn't seem to be enough time to get every thing done but will keep at it. John is working on streetching the front fiberglass be fore he leaves for vacation.
All of the engine should be ready by the week-end. Just waiting on the crank to be balanced. I have all the stuff for the heads.
I changed the chute launch to a single one with a spring launcher that a friend had and didn't use.
Picture of the launcher bandage from a miss firing spring. OUCH
I still can't post pictures.
Later,
Hooley
Hooley has been sending me updates on the car but I have not kept up with his updates. I am way behind. Here is a couple of pictures and some text that Hooley sent me this morning.
John
I made a box in the trunk lid for the chute to rest in. The chute just barely comes past the trunk lid. The lever and cable have been taken apart, cleaned, and lubed. Practice launch was perfect. I used most of yesterday welding in the metal bottom [just part of the bottom of the car] under the weight and water boxes. The water tank has been cleaned, painted and installed. I made a flat pan on top of the water tank to mount some of the electronics. When we ran a mag there was only one wire. The MSD crank trigger take more stuff. A 7AL-3 box, coil, Boost referenced timing retard box. The retard box should be here Fri.
There are data recorders on several things.
The carb hasn't showed up yet. I'll give them a call tomorrow.
I talked to Snow Performance about the water injection nozzle sizes. I had to order 2 more of them. I figured they will flow almost a gallon of water during each run at max. The tank we used is too big for any area left. One will fit someplace.
Hooley
*Note I can not post the pictures this morning. I resized them 3 times and I am out of time to mess with it anymore. I will try later.
John
You can email pics to me or enjenjo if there is a problem.
Thanks for updates.
I've had a few set backs, but still looks like we will be at Speedweek
These are the plugs I made to make the panels which will extend the front end of the 974, 24". I hope to lay up the fiber glass on the foam bucks tomorrow. Hooley extend the front wheels 24" and I am lengthening the body to match the frame change.
John
Same panels, primed. I will take them to Hooley in the morning.
John
looks good John... it is about 30 days till ''wheels up'' for raod trip to B'ville
I thought that since John was out of town I'd post some more of the work progress on the 974. There are more pictures of the work John did....

Sum
I returned home this morning from a trip to southern Oregon and northern California. I have some medical problems to attended to but I will try to help Hooley as I can.
The tank looks great Sumner.
John
I plan on being at Sumner's by 8/6/13 to help as much as I can.
Ken we will be looking forward to your visit. Ruth would like to have some idea of how many people might show up here as she is doing some planning. So if you are thinking of coming please PM me and let me know and also it would be good to supply a phone number in case we have a change in plans.
Hooley is working hard and late every day to get the car ready, but if something comes up and we change our plans at all I could contact you and let you know.
Thanks,
Sum
Wow, I just got back from a couple of months at the cabin and am catching up. You guys are really going all out and doing a lot of good hard work. It's going to be an exciting year at the salt if everything comes together. I'm confident it will. If any help will be needed (including washing dishes or sweeping floors) I'll also be out to Blanding on the 5th or 6th. I'll PM or call you Sum. :D

As it turns out my pal Phil will not be going to the salt after all. I have fallen back on Plan B which calls for driving the Trailblazer with my bike on a hitch rack. Right now the plan id to leave here on 8/1 and include a stop at John's, on to Holley's and then Sam Woodward's in Mustang. Next is a stop at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon with a goal of pulling into Blanding no later than Tuesday the 6th.
I'll be heading from Wendover to western Oregon, then Spokane and a stop back home in Cut Bank, MT.
Looking forward to seeing everyone.
By the way, nice work John, Hooley and Sum, and especially Sum for getting it all posted on the Purple Sage site.

Anyone else making the trip?
Ken I got your phone numbers, thanks. George and Charlie if you can PM me yours so we can be in touch if we need to.
Also I added a page on the wing for the car. The work Hooley did. I need to finish it and will post pictures when that happens. John went over today and helped to put a hole in the nose of the car for the scoop inlet and figured out how to make rocker panels for the car,
Sum
I've added more to the build pages, but I'm still behind on what has been done. I'll probably just post pictures for a while and add dialog later as the days are too short now to get the work done and post also. Here are some teasers....

Thanks for the update pics Sum. Things are moving fast. Much progress recently. Lookin' good! See you guys next week.
With xtra weight added, I imagine the coil springs needed swapped to stronger rated units?
Quote from: "Crosley"With xtra weight added, I imagine the coil springs needed swapped to stronger rated units?
Hi Tony, not sure where he is at on that issue. If I remember right the front springs were about the stiffest he could find for the frontend parts he used. I might be wrong. There are stops, so the car might be down on the stops. Too late to do anymore about that this year.
He is hoping to change the frontend out to a solid (dropped) axle in the future like Gary Hart ran on his Stude. There are other things we wanted to do, but with about 6 days before he has to leave for my place some things are not going to get done this year.
You going to the Salt? Would like to see you. If not we will try and catch up with you this fall if we go through PHX on the way to Southern Calif. It is a little longer but we might have time to go that way. Would like to see you and Jim,

I agree , the front suspension may need changes for added weight now
Tony it will be good to see you guys.
One thing on the weight is that with the longer wheelbase and the engine in the same location it is actually set back more so we have worried that we need more weight forward. There hasn't been enough time to scale the car at this point,
Sum
Team is at Sumner's working hard to prepare the car.
John
I just talked to George in Blanding, they have been thrashing on an oil problem, they think they have it solved. It put them behind, but it looks like they will make it if they can get the rest of the car together today.
I just talked to George, fired the car, no smoke. That issue seems to be fixed. They are thrashing on getting everything done that they wanted to do in the last couple of days while they were chasing the leak. Very positive though.
Doug
I'm watching this thread hoping there will be progress reports from Speed week. Good luck to all.
This is going to be quick. We worked late again and everyone is tired. The oil problem was a serious burn especially coming out of the driver's side. Raw oil and mucho smoke was coming out of the driver's side exhaust right from the first start-up at Hooley's. We pulled the intake to inspect for anything unusual and it sort of looked like oil might be pulling into the intake runners from the valley because of a poor seal....maybe mismatched intake to heads. The history of some of the parts was unknown because they were used. We tried a thicker intake to head gasket but the smoke and oil spray was just as bad. Burned out but optimistic we loaded the car and came to Sumners where much work besides engine work was planned. We pulled the intake again and very methodically eliminated possible causes of the oil leak. It was obviously coming from either the intake or the heads. Oil was pooled on each of the closed valves. We checked angles of the heads and intake and they were within 1 degree of each other so that was considered a match. We sat the intake on the engine without gaskets and it looked like a very good fit. There are some bolts that enter the intake runners.....Jesel rocker rail bolts and two head bolts that are inside the valley. we took all out, cleaned and re-sealed each. Everything looked good and we didn't find anything that looked like it could cause the problem. Next we made a test plate with an air fitting on it that bolted and sealed to the head runners so we could pressurize each runner individually to see if there were any leaks. Sure enough one runner had a hole through the wall into a push rod hole....the result of someone porting the heads too much and breaking through. Long story short, we used some epoxy putty similar to JB weld and let it cure overnight. When we started the engine in the morning it didn't smoke...other than residual oil burning off.
Assuming it will be ok we have been thrashing on a whole bunch of other things for two days and have at least another day before we can be ready to leave for the salt. Had to redesign the rear wing...made a new one from scratch. Charlie has been spreading mud and forming for two days to make it as smooth and uniform as possible. A lot of turbo things have been accomplished. Sumner made the ice box for the turbo cooling without the car being there so quite a bit of fitting had to be done plus finishing and mounting. Much wiring for controls and data gathering is still being done. The car is longer and the rear area has been reworked for the change in chute mounting so new belly pans had to be made and fitted. Much of the engine area is still open to salt and new barriers are still being invented and installed.
Many many more things going on but I'm too burned out to list or remember them. I'm going to bed for a few hours. I'll try to post some pictures and more info later. I've been too busy to take a lot of key pictures but ...oh well. If we accomplish as much tomorrow as we did today it's likely we'll be able to get on the road early Saturday.
Don't get me wrong...we are very positive and having fun in spite of all the challenges.
Later.
thanks for update George.... see ya on the salt
Another long day and the car is still a work in progress. We're hoping to leave tomorrow and get to Wendover by dark. There's still a few things to create and install, some wiring to do, and load everything up. The last thing we did tonight is spray some orange. Here's a couple of pics taken this afternoon and half an hour ago.
Bed time. Good night.

We got done with tech, had a couple minor fixes to do, which were accomplishes in less than an hour. The tech guy then put a fully suited and helmeted Sumner through a vehicle exit practice which went well and he's good to go.
Sum still needs to do rookie orientation tomorrow morning at 11 AM. The car and crew will also do sponsor pictures in mid-morning. We hope to have Sum in the car for his 125 mph license run around lunch time.
Things are going well.

Yes it was his second licensing run. He was required to make a run between 150 and 175. His first run was to be between 125 and 150 and he ran 147 if I remember right. Sumner said the car handles very well and is capable of a lot more speed.
We were going to make the next licensing run (175 -200) but noticed that the front end looked low and discovered that the front spring travel limiting bars were bent and non functional, allowing the front to travel too low. The car is on jack stands but we didn't have time to fix anything before the track closed. We're also adding 500 lbs more weight under the rear belly pan.
We left yesterday morning and the guys were getting the car up again. I see that Sum qualified for his "A" license and the car qualified for the #1 course yesterday afternoon. Sum had to run between 175 and 200 for the license. The car had to run at least 172 by the 2 and a quarter mark. Sum turned a 186 at the quarter.

I'm just back from B-ville. Sumner ran the 213 pass just before the course closed for the night. It was a full 5 mile run and he was way down track for the tow back. There was a little smoke from the engine bay so the hood top was removed down track to investigate. By the time we made it back to the timing tower there was no one there. SO no timing slip was picked up at that time. I left early this (Thur) AM so I don't know if they were able to get the slip. I hope so because Sumner has to have it signed off by the starter to get that license.

Yes, he got the slip signed off in the morning.
After draining the oil and opening the filter Thursday AM it was decided to load the car to save the engine from major damage. There wasn't large debris but enough small metal flakes for some concern.
thanks for updates. When ppl get home and settled down , sleep some.... look forward for additional updates on Hooley.
We enjoyed the time there. I stayed out of the way, took some fotos.
As I told Hooley , I live vicariously thru him as he runs the car at these speeds. I hope in 2014 to visit the Ohio mile if Hooley runs. I need to get over to the Texas runs too. Never been
Did he let his license lapse and cause a redo or did I miss who was driving the car before? I seem to have missed something along the way.

It was Sumner driving, he has never had a license or driven the car.
My apologies for not keeping up. I must have been underneath something when this happened. :D
Quote from: "kb426"My apologies for not keeping up. I must have been underneath something when this happened. :D
Sumner driving and doing rookie license runs was getting multiple things done.
Hooleys new engine combo needs to be data logged and sneak up on power. Hooley admited he would get in the 974 and blast away on the loud pedal.
Sumner has new plans to change his lakester car to V8 power now. Sum needs to get licensed to run his lakester.
It all worked purty well. Sum gets his license runs, the 974 is run at lower boost levels to data log stuff.
One other thing I didn't mention earlier....Wednesday, I think, Hooley's car was chosen to honor a wounded veteran for the Wounded Warrior program. They snapped a couple of quick pictures of the crew and car just as we were about to leave for a run. We met the veteran, thanked him for his sacrifice, and Hooley gave him a t-shirt later on. He looked like he may have been a victim of an explosion.
I left the salt late Wednesday morning to see family in Grants Pass, OR on Thursday. Left there for Spokane, WA Friday early to visit more cousins. Got there late afternoon. Spending today in Spokane. Moving on to Cut Bank, MT where I grew up tomorrow, Need to be home by the end of next week.
I'm happy to hear that Sum got the long course license and that the car handled good. Hope the engine is wounded too badly. We got a lot done in the last couple weeks and it was a all a great success by all accounts.
Hope everyone has made it home safely. I'm 4500 miles into my adventure and will probably do another 2000 or so.

Ruth and I wanted to thank everyone, especially Hooley, for making it possible for me to get in some license runs this past Speed Week. Thanks, John, Mark, Charlie, Ken, Ken & Loraine, Bill, Frank, Doug, Mark, George, Tom and anyone else I forgot for all of the hard work back east, at our house and on the salt.
Soon I will try to have more of the build posted and also this year's story of getting the car to the salt and on the salt action.
Now for another request. Borg Warner (our turbos are from them) contacted me today and would like some pictures of the car to possibly use in their next performance catalog. Ruth took pictures on the salt and Tom sent me some nice pictures. If you have a picture of the car on the salt, by itself or with crew please send them to me. I'll try and go through them and forward some to Borg Warner.
Thanks again to everyone. The experience was something I'll remember forever,
Sumner and Ruth
I just wanted to let everyone know how much being allowed to be part of this means to me. Like Sum said, these are memories for a lifetime.
Thanks to everyone involved
Doug
Sum,
Your mailbox is full, so a bunch of us must have sent pictures. Let us know when empty, and I will send more.
Doug
Not sure which mailbox?? PM me with the box you are trying to use.
The e-mail I have on the site (starts with contact20) isn't full unless someone is sending a lot of photos at once or a very big one.
Right now there is about 29 megs of space on it. Please send pictures that are less than 1 meg.
Thanks,
Sum
A little more info. On my long course run I ran 208 in the 4th mile and 213 in the 5th with a 217 exit speed. The car will do much more. I ran the second half of the 3, all the 4 and the 5 on about 50% throttle and no boost all motor.
I didn't want to screw up the license run or I would of gone faster. The car handled great. Also according to the tach and the data logger I was running 6200 at the exit which according to my spreadsheet is 240 so don't know what was going on there.
It looks like we will for sure go to World Finals the 1st of October with Hooley driving.
Also I'm back to documenting the changes to the car and have 3 new pages on the 28 gallon ice water tank for the intercoolers....

He has checked the mains and there was no damage and the same with the rods that he has checked. So we could of kept running, but I'm glad we didn't chance it. This stuff is expensive  .
Hooley will get on here sooner or later. His computer broke about 2 weeks before SpeedWeek and he still isn't back on-line but he does want to thank everyone that helped us at home, my place and on the salt,

good news on the engine in 974... baby steps with new setup as you folks are doing.
Was data logging at Speed Week a success or limited?
Hooley took some time and chatted with me and Janice. We enjoyed it.
Had a few chats with purplepickuptruck guy.. he gets a little rev'd up and I enjoy that too!

Yeah, we did talk about politics some and solved most of the world's problems didn't we?

I'd say limited. It all worked (16 data points), but while the license runs insured the 'baby steps' it also limited what we could do. Keeping the speeds down meant that the car ran on the motor on almost all of the runs except for some very brief full throttle/load situations.
We did see some boost, up to 6-7 lbs. briefly, but not long enough to really see what the air/fuel would be under constant boost. Even the A license run over 200 was at about 50% throttle for most of the run. If we would of watched the water/oil temps more closely and put the run off to the next day then the run after that would of been a good run for putting the car under load and boost for a longer period.
According to Gordon though at Superior Air whom we bought the carb from the data we did get suggests the carb should be pretty close at higher loads/boost. I'm hoping we go two jets richer on the driver side and one on the passenger side as I'd like to see it richer for the next run.
I do have questions about some of our data and how to interpret it. When I have it in better order to present to someone Gordon said he would look at it and also the techs at Borg Warner said they would also help along with Jerry at DIYautotune and Marty at Turbosmart. Luckily we do have some good backup help in this venture.
I'll post more when I know more. It was good seeing you guys. It has been a while,

Here is a copy and paste from a post I just made on landracing.com:
I added some video of my license runs last night. We have in-car and out-the-front video from the first 3 runs. Then I think left the cameras on and ran the batteries as the last 3 runs we only have a few minutes of video from each run. Of some value as we can see the oil temp on the dash before each run and can see that it was getting hotter and hotter as the last 4 runs were back to back. We really shouldn't of made the A license run that day knowing what we know now. Should of gone to the pits and cooled everything down. Next time we will be much more careful and watch the oil temps and change some of the water between each run in the main 30 gallon tank that feeds the rad-in-a-box and change water and add a lot more ice to the intercooler tank since hopefully we will be running more boost.
Here are two videos from the C license run (150-175 mph)my second run after getting the D license) and it is pretty boring but shows the starter and you can also see how well the car handles. The only time I moved the wheel was a couple short WOT experiments when the tires got loose going into boost and the car jumped a little sideways.
In-Car: //
Down-Track: //
the 2 mile was 168.846, 2 1/4 177.085, 3 mile was 173.66. I pushed the 2 1/4 speed a little higher than I should of but was trying to see if getting 175 at the 2 1/4 to qualify the car for the long course was going to be a problem as they wanted us to re-qualify the car with all the changes to it. We did not try to use that speed to go to the long course, but used my speed on my B license run the next day.
Next up is video from my first attempt at a B license (175-200 mph). I was trying to run 190 at the 2 1/4 and when I went to WOT before the 2 the throttle stuck wide open for 3 seconds. The car jumped sideways and I lifted as I had done on previous runs but the throttle was stuck wide open. This was at 178 mph according to the data log at that point. The tail of the car continued to the right very quickly and I felt for sure it was going to go all the way around so didn't pull the chute as it would of just wrapped around the car. I steered into the slide and the vertical stabilizers caught the car and sent it the other way but not quite as far. Then I waited until the car started to swing the other way and pull the chute just before it was lined up with down-track. The chute came out and the car settled down. Of course all of that happened a lot quicker than you can read about it.
In-car: //
Down-track (keep track of the horizon): //
We took the car back to the staging line and Hooley added a 3rd throttle spring that was also at a better angle to the linkage at WOT and never had a throttle problem after that run. No more videos after that run, but a short run-down.
The next run, for the B license, I screwed up and shifted from 1st to 4th. Instead of trying a down shift I left it there to see how the car would pull under load. I had a 122 mile 2 speed, 145 at the 2 1/4 and a 156 3 mile speed. According to the rpm at the exit the car was running over 180 though so that was good.
Finally got my act back together on the next B license run and ran a 155 2 mile, a 188.726 at the 2 1/4 (qualified for the long course) and a 186.560 3 mile as I just ran through at the same rpm trying not to screw anything up.
We went right over the the #2 long course and ran (should of waited to next day) and again I just wanted a smooth run for an A license. Ran a 153 2 mile, 178 at the 2 1/4, 188 3rd mile, 208 4th mile and a 213 5th mile. I ran the second half of the 3, all the 4 and all the 5 at about 50% throttle and about the same rpm as I didn't have my rpm sheet with me before the run. When I saw the exit traps coming up I got in it a little and ran a 217.997 exit speed. The oil temp was pegged at 300.
The next day after looking at the filter we decided to quit but later found no engine damage once Hooley got the engine to his place.
At this point I'd call the rear vertical stabilizers a major success as I'm sure the car would of spun without them on the one run and on the other runs the car was as straight as an arrow as long as the tires didn't break loose and when they did it was very predictable and returned to straight as soon as you lifted just a bit. On the near spin I thought for sure the forces might of laid the verticals over but they survived with no bending or damage at all.
I was really happy to of been able to drive the car and run over 200. Thanks Hooley and all the other guys who worked on the car and a special thanks to my wife, Ruth who has been very supportive on this whole deal.,

Sum,
Thanks for the update on all of the runs and analysis of the handling. I'm really looking forward to seeing what it can do at the World Finals.

An update on what is going on.
As I mentioned before, I think, after the high oil temp on the last run and the decision to go home and check the motor we took the car to my place and pulled the motor and Hooley took it home and checked the bearings. They looked fine so we might of been able to go on but....he did a leak down test on the motor and one cylinder was low, around 25%. He could hear air in the adjacent cylinder's intake or exhaust. He pulled the head and the head gasket was about ready to let go so good thing we stopped.
He installed new gaskets with a sealer and torqued them higher and also had time to run the motor to operating temp and let it set a couple days and retorqued again. Something he didn't have time for before. He feels good about it but the block might get O-Ringed over the winter.
I've cleaned the car but still find salt all of the time. Re-fiberglassed one part of the belly pan that got hurt going on or off the trailer. Also the same for the bottom of the nose of the frontend. Replaced 2 of the forward heims on the ladder bars.
Fixed some of the belly pan mounts that had either broke off or were damaged. Put in dzus fasteners on the very back belly pan that we had scabbed in just before going to the salt. Reinforced the frontend suspension stops and added a second brace to them.
Found some other rims and tires to use on the car when it is in storage and on the trailer. We also bought 2 almost new landspeed rear tires and rims. We are also going to mount up 2 tires I had so now will have 2 front and 2 rear spares.
I got 4 new springs for the wastegates that will let us start with basically zero boost at WOT. With the 8 lb. springs we were using it would go from no boost to 6-8 lbs. and the sudden 200-300 HP in a second or two was hard to control. Now with the ability to start at zero boost at WOT we should be able to bring the boost on in 2-4 lb increments with the 6 stage Turbosmart boost controller in 3rd and 4th and run on the motor in 1st and 2nd. Remember the car ran 218 on no boost and 50% throttle. I think on just motor in the first couple gears the car will actually accelerate faster since you won't have to be feathering the throttle so much. Then in some of 3rd and 4th we can hopefully bring the boost on in steps that don't keep breaking the tires loose.
I also found a new set of the 'right' overdrive gears for 4th (.865) that Hooley will put in when he gets to our place. I also found two different sets of higher drive gears for the transmission that drive the countershaft that would also give us a higher 4th with the present two high gear sets we have available now but would also make 1st and 2nd higher which could be good or bad. At least now we have a better selection of available gears and also gears I could use in the lakester if I buy the same transmission which is what I'm leaning towards.
Hooley is on his way now (Friday) to our place with his wife and sister-in-law. They are taking their time and should arrive here Sunday. We will spend a couple days sightseeing in the area and then Wanda and her sister will return home and we will put the motor back in the car and do a few other things and hopefully leave for Wendover Sunday the 30th.
The plan is to put Hooley in the car and run AA/BFCC. If he gets the record and there is still time we might change to AA/BGCC and I'll drive the car. This time there won't be any license runs for either of us so we might get a chance to see what the car will do and I'm very optimistic that it is going to be fast if we don't do anything stupid.
I think that is about it,
Sum
Sum,
I don't remember if I told you guys about Ron Tezinski (I have known him for years, but still can't spell his name) and the "stay in School" 32 ford roadster. He put one of those adjustable boost controllers in it this year, but just on and off. He said went out and about 200 or so, hit the boost, immiedate 10 pounds more, and just "went around". He was not in a good mood that night. He was going to change it up to the way you have it with small boost jumps.
Doug
Have fun. Wish I was there.

It appears the World Finals is cancelled.

So much for my In-N_Out burger. Been watching landracing all day, and they have been hinting it was going to happen. Then announced it.

Darn, I just got the news from Sumner. You guys are quick. I hadn't even considered a rain out. I guess that's why I booked my airline through one of the internet travel companies.. nonrefundable... What a dumb *! I did get my rental car refund.
Poor Hooley. At least I didn't pull a trailer to Utah. I guess he had to go retrieve the 974 anyway.
That plan sure didn't work out.

Well it sure seems like a long winter. The car is at Sum's just waiting for summer. I am going out sometime this spring and work on the car , getting it ready for Speed Week.
Sum has been busy working on his lakester. Maybe this year or next.
This year I am not working every day to get the Stude ready and that is a relief for me. I was working on a 32 Ford glass roadster but sold it the other day. I didn't even take a picture of it. I will move the 1942 Willys pu into the garage before too long. It will be a street able Gasser.
I want everyone to know that I appreciate the time ,effort, and money that you put in our Bonneville experience. It has meant a lot to me.
On a good note: The days are getting longer and it is getting closer to warm weather.
Hooley
I'm anxious to see it run in person.
Hooley, we appreciate you doing this and letting us be a part of it. :D
Thanks guys and if any thing happens I'll let you know.
John got his "Century Of Speed" book the other day. He said there was a couple of pictures od the 974 in it.

I will post this here as I think it will reach most of the people that have been part of the 974 over the years. Our good friend Jerry passed away during the night Friday of an apparent heart related problem. Jerry was a great guy with an unbelievable positive attitude. He was one of Hooley's high school classmates, a hot rodder, drag racer, and Bonneville team member and supporter. He was an inspiration to all of us.
Gods speed buddy.

Miss you Jer,

Sorry to hear about Jerry passing away
Here it is the middle of June and little has been said about what is going on with 974 or 2974. We have two numbers now. The 2974 is when we changes classes during Speed week . The car is entered in AA/BFCC for this Speed Week, if we get done in Fuel class and switch to Gas class with Sum driving then we change the number to 2974.
I went to Sum's last month and worked on the car. We finished putting it back together and fixed a couple of problems we found.
We left Sum's and went to El Mirage to watch their racing. They don't call it dirty for nothing. We did run it several people we knew from Bonneville.
When I left Sum's he had a long list of things to get done before we leave for Speed Week. He has been busy. Check out his web site for some of the things he is working on.
We will leave Okla. about a week before Speed Week to get all the last minute things done.
Since I don't have the car here to work on , I started building a 1942 Willys pick-up. I will get a thread started about it.
Thanks Hooley
Here we are 2 weeks till we leave for Sum's place. He has been working on the car all summer. I have talked with some of you about coming to Speed Week. If you are coming and have a Champion T- shirt, please bring it along. We're not sure of the racing plan yet.
As a lot of you know I ran a piece of wire into my left eye. It shattered the lens. The Dr. thinks I'll be able to get a new one by the last of AUG. We're hoping so. If I feel driving isn't safe, Then Sum will start in where he left off last year. Hope a Record and maybe the 200MPH club, Just hoping.
Should have more later,
Hooley
Hi Hooley, sorry to hear about some of the bad luck you've had lately, hope all is OK and will see you all on the big white dynomometer in a few weeks time.
I have a very old Champion Spark Plugs T shirt, but I don't think that's what you mean. But if you bring along an extra 3XL team shirt I'll be happy to buy it from you. Hell it's high time I had another orange shirt just to annoy Mrs Carps.

Carps,
I hate to break it to you, but the Champion Oil shirt is black. Will that make Mrs. Carps happier?
We were supposed to take photos in the shirt last year for that sponsor, but failed to do it. I expect their name is still on the car.
I will bring mine, but will not be spending the afternoon in black with the sun baking me.
The guys at work have started calling me Pumpkin because I am always in an orange 974 shirt. (University of Illinois shirts are the same color. I have a few of them also) I forced myself to start wearing some of the older ones. I have one on now that has the "Record Holder 236.9 mph" on it. That has been a few years ago. I keep the new 974 shirts for "special occasions".
I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again.

Thanks Beck for suggesting we take pictures early in the morning.
It seems like after racing starts there isn't much extra time.
Hooley
Hooley,
I'm happy that you are able to go to Speed Week. Hopeully both you and Sum can make that big orange car run strong. Certainly seemed like it was working it's way up there last year but time runs out. At least you aren't chasing the engine around this year- cross our fingers.
I'm sorry I can't be there this year. Too many irons in the fire caring for grand kids a couple days a week, M-I-L still in the nursing home, one son going through a bankruptcy and divorce.
I was able to wrangle 4 days for selling at the Street Rod Nationals swap meet though.
GOOD LUCK!!
Charlie
Quote from: "Beck"I hate to break it to you, but the Champion Oil shirt is black. Will that make Mrs. Carps happier?
Prolly not, I have ten squillion and six black T shirts already.
Quote from: "Beck"The guys at work have started calling me Pumpkin because I am always in an orange 974 shirt.
I had an orange pullover that My Mum knitted for me, and wore it everywhere. Not long after getting married it mysteriously vanished.
Some time later I kinda figured it out. Arrived home from a day at the auctions with a shiney orange Porsche 911 and proudly proclaimed I had purchased Mrs Carps a fine new automobile. Took her outside to view said exotic sports car, to which her first words were to ask, how long we had been married.
The answer to which was, "About ten years."
To which she responded with, "So what on earth makes you think I'm going to drive an orange car?"
That was 30 years ago and she still won't let me bring anything orange into the house unless it can be eaten or turned into juice.

There is nothing more beautiful than sunrise on the salt.
The afternoon, full sun, photos seem to make the easiest good looking group/car shots. Those are hard to screw up.
I don't have a problem putting the shirt on in the heat of the day for a photo. I just plan to swap back into something lighter colored.
Will everyone be there on Fri? Once we get in motion we tend to stay in motion, so photos before racing may be easiest. If we schedule a time everyone can be in the pit.
Thats my 2 cents worth... I'm not worth much more...
Yea, I don't know if every one will be there Fri afternoon. We may have to play it by ear. We will work something out.
Odie and I are leaving Helena early Friday, not sure exactly how early we will get there. I never got one of the Champion shirts, so don't wait on us.
Doug
Doug, I have some more Champion shirts. We will wait till every one is there for pictures. It is good to hear Oddie is coming.
Hooley
I'll try to remember my shirt and will be at Sumner's on Tuesday 8/5. Still in north Michigan right now. See ya soon.
Have a safe trip, George.
Well, we left Sumners a day early and it's probably a good thing. A tire shredded on Hooley's trailer somewhere by Provo. Changing it wasn't bad but we had to buy a fresh one to replace the spare and another one that was looking questionable. When we got to a Discount Tire in Salt Lake City during rush hour but they didn't have the right ones in stock so they sent us across town to another store. The tires were under warrantee there. Things worked out but it just ate up a couple of hours.
We heard that it had rained on the salt today and they were going to delay the start of racing til Sunday maybe. It was dark when we got here so we couldn't see much but it was raining and we could see water in the median of I-80 as we passed the exit to the salt. We'll know more tomorrow.
Oh yeah, we stopped by Bo Huff's shop and spent a while on the way up too.
Looks like racing is still on after the rain yesterday with just a couple of days delay. Here is the official report from the SCTA facebook page:
Bonneville Salt Report, August 7, 8:30pm: after a complete review of the Bonneville Salt Flats, it appears that the courses are drying and we expect continued improvement. The Board has decided to start site cleanup on Saturday, August 9th, allowing all participants onto the salt for pit selection and inspection. We hope to start racing on Monday, August 11th based upon course conditions. The SCTA merchandize trailer will be open on the entry road for all SCTA products. The Board thanks all racers and fans for their continued support and patience during this delay. We will have another update tomorrow morning to provide current conditions but for now, Speed Week and the Century of Speed celebration is still on!
Doug
My opinion is that they won't be racing this year but according to the latest from SCTA, the courses are drying but I drove out to the end of the road late today and here's some pics of what I saw. One of the officials there said the water was deep enough that it was over the top of the tires on a Jeep Cherokee and flowing into the car through the bottoms of the doors. The water in the pits is about knee deep and the track has a couple of inches on it. We'll see what happens.

By the way, it rained again late this afternoon. :(
The year that I went, we had the same view from the end of the road. By wednesday, they were running on the short course but you said it rained some more so it sounds poor to me. Welcome to the salt flats. :(
Quote from: "kb426"The year that I went, we had the same view from the end of the road. By wednesday, they were running on the short course. :(
That's encouraging. I've only been coming for 10 years or so and haven't seen this much water so my opinion is just that. We're keeping our fingers crossed. The rain last evening was a short downpour in town and maybe it didn't even rain on the salt. The clouds were dark though. We just got up and are headed down to talk about it and finish up on car chores.
My exp. was turned into one of my best memories. Because they couldn't race, it turned into a fabulous social event for a few days. I spent a whole afternoon with Don Vesco while he worked on his 'liner. It had 2 turbo offys then. Being able to converse with serious car people that have time to talk was wonderful. My whole week has stories like that. A friend and I took his 29 model a roadster pickup out there. It was 1000 miles one way. No top, no sun block, just 2 friends enjoying a great week. :)

This year has definitely been a big social event too. Lots of unhurried stories have been shared...from the parking lot to McDonalds.
The latest news on the event is that Speed Week has been called off for this year. Such is outdoor racing.
George, Thanks again for the call.
Odie and I were on our way down this morning when George called and gave us the news on Speed Weeks. We were about 150 miles south of Helena, so ended up having a nice drive out of the deal.

Man, I'm sorry to hear that it was scrubbed (no pun intended). I know the amount of work, worry and money that goes into the venture. I'm probably as unhappy as you guys.
Charlie
we made the lap around Wendover & Salt flat area today. Just drove up from Ely NV this morning..
Now: Sitting in motel in Wells NV.. paid for the room, may as well use it
Sorry to hear the meet was canceled. I tried really hard to make it out this year, but just couldn't make it.
Chances are better that next year I can attend. I'm sure it's very disappointing for all the racers.
All that work and all the expense is what I think of when they canceled the event. A lot of disappointed people. I hope everyone has a safe trip home.

I talked to folks from Australia and Canada. I drove hundreds of miles as a spectator.. they flew thousands of miles. Some guys had cars shipped in across the large pond. I wonder if they will return for World of Speed if that event is held
We can't control the weather ,just make the best of it. We had a good time in the parking lot the time we were there. Sum and Ruth had to leave a little early for home. As it was there was no racing and they didn't miss anything. Ken and I stopped at the Speedway museum . That is a great place.
Thanks everyone for your time and support. This is rain out #2 for us. I am counting last years World Final. Sum was ready to test the confirgation on the car. Hopeful a record was there.
We heard roamers that they will extend World finals to include Speed Week time. Just roamers at this time.

i would have done a pair of each design for the trailer.. cannot tell the turning traction when you have one of each..

back in 78/79. my autoshop teacher had some aluminum front wheels made for his i believe C streamliner.. he had them up to 305 when he was blown away by don vesco.. who blew a tire in the same class and went thru the clocks at 320 on its side with a single 4 barrel small block. where he had a twin turbo BBC.. frontal area does count..
Interesting video Wayne. Thanks. It's cool that they could test where no other vehicle had gone before. 8)
Wayne,
Thanks for posting this video. It takes a lot to make a wheel right .

It looks like with the miss matched wheels they would get the wrong lateral movement info.
just ran across this.... in case you run across a blue version on a back street some night.. you will know what you might be up against..

That's some fuel system.
